I Wrapped My Drums! Drum Shell Refinishing / Restoration with Figured Veneer How To

I have an old set of drums from the 1970s, and they looked really fatigued. I embarked upon wrapping them in some wood veneer.
I would say that every type of drum refinishing is part of this video, depending on what you wanted to do. If simply rewrapping in plastic, substitute plastic instead of veneer. If removing plastic, and just finishing the shell, skip the veneer part.
Thanks for watching!

I build guitars and looking into doing drums. A padded foam sanding pad works well on the wet sanding process. Also be careful that water doesn’t get under the lacquer where the holes are located. I’ve seen the finished layers cloud up or bubble. I enjoyed watching this. Thx

Nice!! Uhh a rubber Formica roller would be perfect for rolling on the veneer. Semi transparent laquer is cool too. Uhh I have a set of late 60,s Slingerlands I,m thinking of refinishing. They were wood from the factory but fifty years of almost daily use they have some surface rash.

I’ve not found a roller that I’ve liked. I have some, they’re worse than what I used. Given that good rollers are remarkably expensive for a task I don’t do often, it was sufficient. I may machine one at some point, but personally the whole handle thing on rollers makes it difficult to forcefully apply pressure. I end up bending the handle or having the roller zoom off forwards or backwards. I prefer to apply pressure as close to the axis of rotation as I can (like a rolling pin), thus reducing or eliminating unwanted torque. Torque = Rperpendicular * force. When eliminating the leverage by eliminating the handle and centering force onto the axle, Rperp is as close to zero as I can get it.

This is awesome. Im interested in redoing a 20x14 kick. Where did you find the veneers?

At rockler lumber. I don’t know if they have a location by you, but they’re quite online as well.
