It is said that martial arts begin and end with a bow, teaching strict etiquette towards the law. This principle of correcting oneself and maintaining order is common to all martial arts. Each school and master has its own established rules, but the basic mindset must be one of pledging sincerity, respecting the personality of the opponent, and showing courtesy. Martial arts start with a bow, then techniques are demonstrated with the sword. The practice is completed with a final bow, making it a complete form. Here, we will explain the initial bow, followed by the ending bow.
For a samurai, the sword is considered equal to life. Therefore, particular attention must be paid to handling the sword. It is necessary to always be mindful of the direction in which the sword's hilt or tip is pointing. After the sword is placed in the belt, one must feel as though the body and sword are united. A key point is to relax the wrist holding the sword during the standing bow, ensuring the sword's tip points towards the ground. When inserting the sword into the belt, hold the hilt with the right hand and fix it firmly so that the hilt points downward. The basic way to draw the sword is downward, as drawing it with the hilt pointing upwards would lack strength. The end of the belt should be tucked into the waistband and pulled towards the left rear.
