I've had loads of questions about the IAM Roadsmart Masters Test, so I've made a 2 part series about Masters which tells you everything you need to know.
In this video I explain what Masters is all about, how to take part & what is required from you if you undertake the Masters test.
In part 2, I'll give a demonstration ride at Masters level so you can see what standard of riding is required to pass the test.
I have already made a similar 2 part series about Masters in the car.
Part 1: • IAM Masters Part 1: In...
Part 2: • IAM Masters Part 2: De...
If you're interested in taking your Masters test, more information is available from IAM Roadsmart here: www.iamroadsmart.com/masters

As you consistently said throughout the video, CONSISTENCY is the thing that sets the Masters test apart from the regular IAM test. I usually explain it as the examiner is going to be much more picky over a longer period of time and not let you get away with those small errors. I did the test when you could do 'test only', and what set me in good stead was being an Observer and having to explain what, and how, you do things using The System, and importantly what real benefits it brings. Never do anything just 'for test'. You don't need to be an Observer, but a deep and thorough understanding of 'Advanced' Riding is required so you can implement it. There's nothing in my videos that wouldn't also be done the same at Masters. I was pleased when I did my test to get a distinction, but it will soon be time to do my retest. You are only as good as your last ride. 😉

Passed my IAM test last year and preparing for my ROSPA now. Aiming to do the masters thereafter. Always room to improve is absolutely right.

Great explanation Reg. lots of people confused about the difference. I think it’s great you shared that you didn’t get a first on that initial test. I did masters as part of an investment in my riding after being an observer for a while. Very worthwhile.

I noticed that throughout the video which was on a minor country roads the speed that you were more regularly doing was 60/ 62 mph and only a few times would come down to just in the 50's. Is it therefore a pre requirement that you should at all times or mostly ride up to the national speed limit or could a candidate perhaps ride a little slower than the maximum speed limit. I was always told that the speed limit was a maximum speed and not a target that should be reached all of the time.

My, (excellent), IAMRS bike examiner recommended I undertake my Masters. For various reasons I have not apllied as of yet. My test on unfamiliar roads & due to a diversion on the route it went on longer than expected. I continue to focus on (appropriate), progress, cornering & overtaking skills (& other areas). Every ride can be a school day ! I took IAM car test in 1991 (Pre IPSGA) & later did "job" training on 4 wheels (6 in a DAF V8). In early 90's Montegos were unfortunately at lliteral disposal 😉 Some who pass their Masters might later have a degree of apprehension re subsequent re-test(s) & any negative repercussions if they don't do as well as hoped on re-test. I am also looking at off road (dirt) &/or more track based training....to widen my skill set. Not expecting a reply but thanks for content & sharing👍

Is “ROASMART” a new organization? Only kidding Reg, it’s easily done. Another great video. I’m learning so much from all this quality information. Thanks 😀😀

At one point we were overtaking on a single lane carriageway and our speedo got to 63 mph. before we cut to another shot some time after the overtake. I just wander what the top speed was obtained to that overtake and just how much space was given to that overtaken vehicle before he moved back in. We will never know will we.? but it begs the question as with the Masters certificate concentrating primarily on things like making progress and on overtakes. Things that put greater pressure on motorcyclists and can create greater dangers to themselves and to other road users.

I’ve looked into the Masters, it is quite expensive at £299, they also have a taster session at £89. The RoadSmart site only gives very brief details about the course I think some information re the mentors would be helpful particularly their general location, I’m in a very rural area and not sure where my nearest mentor is, it could be a fair distance to travel. I look forward to the rest of the series it may help me decide.

I did the taster (for Driving) which whetted my appetite but also picked up on three things I needed to work on. I worked on those over the Autumn and Winter. The next Spring, I did the full Masters. Yes, you do a lot of driving (or riding) but that's kind of the point. If you are not an enthusiastic driver (or rider) don't do the Masters. It is hard work but should be fun. I had a ball!

@@R04drunner1 thanks for that perspective Michael, I do love to ride and drive, but prefer to ride when I can. I ride lots of miles, in recent years particularly have done more Blood Bike miles than personal and need to undertake training and advanced test every three years or so. I have looked at the Masters a number of times and will investigate a bit more before making a decision 👍

Yes I spotted the ROASMART as well. It's my job to spot stuff like that, so it's difficult to turn my instincts off. Reg and his excellent videos were a MAJOR reason why I took and passed my Masters on cars. But even Reg can't tempt me onto two wheels, it's hard enough keeping four wheels on the road sometimes - even when not piloting a Montego! 🤪 Had a nice 24 hour test drive in an MG Montego 2 litre one time, but was happy to go back to my VW Scirocco II afterwards. Keep up the great work, Reg: you are an inspiration!

Can I just say that that screen on his bike doesn't look safe to me. It appears foggy and therefore one's vision through it is impaired. Its ok when viewing over it but sometimes one wants to see the state of the road directly in front and ahead and that means looking through a smoked glass or perspex at the best of times.

You can cross hatched markings if the surrounding border is made up of broken White lines, you can’t cross if the surrounding border is made up of a SOLID White line.

Will you stop taking your left hand off the handlebars whilst you are talking. There is no need to do it. unless you are conducting an orchestra. Its just a complete bad practise and something you would not tolerate from others at any time never mind under test or indeed any other conditions. Would you condone it for test candidates to continually be taking their hands off the bars at apparently any times during a test ? I would think not so stop doing it. Please. PS. The roads are nice up there in Penrith and surrounding district.
