Oh Man, I love your honest raw reactions. I agree, Iam’s Dad has taught him well. Speaking as a Poly-Mely (Polynesian-Melanesian) person, music is culturally a story-telling, bonding & sometimes a spiritual experience. Growing up, I remember large family gatherings where someone (usually an Uncle) would bring out the guitar &/or ukulele & we would all sit & listen to him telling a story in song. This could also be accompanied by more main stream songs, sometimes Hymns/Gospel & Poly-Mely Island music, to which we’d also croon along and dance. Iam, for me, feels familiar & like home. I don't get to hear this kind of singing much anymore as I’ve married a lovely Aussie chap, so getting to witness Iam’s journey during this season of American Idol has been a wonderful blessing. Im convinced Iam can sing anything and it would be platinum!!! Ive seen talent but this young man has went above and beyond that......18 year old superstar with monster and sound of silence alone. Everything else would complete an album. Rodney will forever be proud of Iam and the best part.....he will always hear his Dad's background vocals to guide Iam through every song he sings.....that is extremely rare and a gift. No matter what genre Iam chooses to sing, he will dominate. He gets better and better every time he sings. Brother, another job well done and another video complete. Katy declaring Iam the winner isn't "judging" and may turn fans away from voting for him just because. I think the same happened to Joshua Ledet several years ago. The judges, especially JLo were so convinced he was going to win, and they pushed him to the moon. Joshua came in third. I'm glad Iam channeled IZ, but I'm waiting for Iam to Channel IZ again and do Over the Rainbow. If he does that, I'll loose my sh*t and die happy. Iam is recording his first album with just the songs he's doing on AI. I'll listen to that all day.

Iam did a great version of this song, he did not want to sing it because he did not want to disrespect Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole (Braddah IZ), a Hawaiian legend. I am from the same island as Iam, Oahu, and I grew up listening to IZ, but all the songs he performed so far he did the songs as Iam Tongi version and I know the local people of Hawaii are so very proud of him.

Got my votes in for Iam! He is so consistently good in whatever he sings. Others are up/down in that regard. I was afraid the song choice would not resonate with younger voters, but gotta go with what's thrown their way. He did a wonderful job with it of course. Bugs me that voting time frames makes it harder for folks in Hawaii.

So Louis Armstrong released this song in 1967; Iz Kamakawiwo'ole blew it out of the water with his rendition of the song and then he meshed the song with Somewhere over the Rainbow. Iam didn't want to sing the song since it was on Braddah Iz's cover. Iam.. Braddah Iz is smiling down and he's proud of your rendition.. Iz is singing with the angels with his angelic voice that we miss terribly, but we got Iam singing to us here. Mahalo you tug and my heart strings Iam Hana Hou!

I loved and agree with your reaction as usual, so I wasnʻt going to add any comments, but the last couple of days, Iʻve been watching other reaction videos, and I noticed that people in the Islands automatically think of Israel Kamakawiwoʻoleʻs rendition, while people not from the Islands, especially the older generation, think of Louis Armstrong, and many people are not familiar or even aware of the other. Of course, there are younger fans of other music genres who arenʻt familiar with either artist or rendition, so since I know a lot of people view your reactions, Iʻd like to share both versions here. Oh, and one note: When I was young I thought Iʻd like to have Louis Armstrongʻs "What a Wonderful World" played at my funeral, but after Bruddah IZʻs song with "Over the Rainbow" was recorded, it has become one of the most played (or performed) songs at funeral services and celebrations in Hawaiʻi. Though youʻre much too young to be making plans for your funeral, I think Iam would be honored to play for his #1 Fan Reacter, hopefully in person!
