We had Shakespeare in school but English not being my native tongue, I struggled to understand, let alone appreciate. I now realize it takes certain passion as well as knowledge on the part of the teacher to inspire students. More than the meter he followed, I now see Shakespeare had such a deep insight into human psyche and had the ability to capture it in words.

Definitely! I think it takes time to really appreciate Shakespeare, but it is worth the effort! There is a reason his works are still so widely studied and performed today

Thank you for this easy to understand intro. Question: Is using U and X a standard notation to indicate unstressed and stressed syllables?

You're very welcome! The standard symbols for marking iambic pentameter are a shallow U symbol for unstressed (I can't find the exact one on a standard keyboard) and either a ` or X for a stressed syllable. I use the X as it is easier visually 🙂 Hope that helps!

so finding iambic pentameter is literally just counting to 10, it’s a pretty simple thing, idk why people make it sound so complicated…

This is why America public school is such a joke. I recalled in high school English, teacher assigned Shakespeare reading. But never bothered to explain iambic pentameter. I couldn't make sense of it. Now I know why I hated Shakespeare! LMAO
