They were trying frustrating days. Jeff Lawson one of my favorite swing bowlers and Greg Mathew’s, god wasn’t he a breath of fresh air. He was my hero at the time .

I think what was most impressive was Australia's world cup win in 1987 - Thank you for posting this unique footage .

That one day series win was the first step in the long journey back to greatness. Boon, marsh, Jones, waugh, mcdermott, Matthew's and Reid all became good or great test players and formed the nucleus of a very good test side in the late 80s and early 90s. Boon and waugh were in the side that regained the ser frak worrell trophy.

1987 world-cup victory epitomised the result of jelling as a cohessive unit under dynamic Alan Border. Ausies were devoid off star attraction. Boon, marsh, Steve Vaugh, Deenjons, Creck Methews and the collosal ausie captain created history by becoming the third team of lifting the world-cup. We were unlucky to be knocked out by England in semis but played magnificiently. Still remember when we beat Australia on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. Azharuddin, for his allround performance was adjudged man of the match.

That New Zealand team were bloody good. They beat us at home the following summer before we beat the Aussies in the Ashes (in Australia). I always thought the turning point for the Aussies was the 5th test in 86/87 Ashes

Liked for Greg Matthews. His bowling tied the Test with India, only the second ever tied Test. Contrastingly, he bowled negatively to Ravi Shastri in a one-day match and Ravi hit him for sixes and fours to win the match for India. Dont know if that was Greg's eccentricity or his captain Border's orders.

tryarunm he was more of a batting all rounder but not good enough with the bat to bat top 6. Most of his best moments for Australia were with the bat despite being picked as a bowler. His bowling was not quite good enough at test level. Serviceable but never going to win a match with the ball. Eventually this was found out as the batting line up improved and the team needed him to take wickets.

Crowe and Hadlee...you should have lost the test series 3-0, Border. NZ were easily the better side.

I'm a huge AB fan, but I agree - I reckon the man himself might revise those comments, he's not an unreasonable guy .. bit defensive here ...

@TheLyingTruthTeller - all very fair and true. Australia started to turn it around the following year when we managed to draw a series against the Kiwis thanks to Mike Whitney's obstinance with the bat of all things. This was on Australia's home soil, a bit of an indicator as to how far we'd fallen. Probably lower than the current Aussie mob who just conceded their first ever series loss to India on home soil. We went over to the land of the long white cloud in that 85/86 period and lost 1-0 in a hotly contested 3-test series; AB a ton in each innings in the 2nd test - he wanted to resign the captaincy after losing that series. Fast forward a few years, and Border suddenly has Shane Warne at his disposal, who wreaks havoc on the Kiwis both at home and abroad. Goes to show that a class strike bowler (Hadlee/Warne) goes a very long way to subduing the ambitions of your opponents.
