Of course. Gillan is smashed on this. You do not see many interviews where someone is drunk. They sometimes fake it. But. This is what a rock star really acts like when they are drunk. Poor Roger Glover is trying hard to cover up Ian's drunkenes. This is a great moment. As usual. Never a boring of fake moment with Deep Purple.

@gillan64 I agree and have never thought of DP as a heavy metal band. They're much more creative & complex than the run-of-the-mill heavy metal group. They're hard rock, often with a heavy blues signature certainly.

OMG! Saw this one live on tv back in 1987. I remember it very well because Ian was so strange :)). I was a really big DP Fan back than - till today - and I was looking forward for this interview the whole day before. That was on the German Music tv channel Tele 5 in a show called "Hard'n'Heavy". Fu***ng Hell I was so young and these guys as well. The Lady who did the interview named Annette Hopfenmüller. She spoke English with an Bavarian accent :))). In that times it was one of only two hard rock/metal tv shows we received in Germany. The other one - and my favourite - was "Monsters Of Rock" on Sky Channel (UK) by Mick Wall. Fantstic Times.

One can only imagine how Ian felt after that night, hungover and Roger told that do you remember the German interview? "........"

Perhaps it would've gone smoother had they been provided with a nice couch or some comfortable chairs so they could actually SIT there and relax. Ian looks like a kid in the store waiting impatiently for his mom to hurry and pick out the shoes she is going to wear for the big night out with the husband.

One thing people need to understand is, this was a heavy metal cable TV show probably watched only by a few thousand people so the boys were just having a bit of fun, taking it less seriously this way. True metal heads watching this then and now, should appreciate the 'bad attitude' living up to the name of the DP single. They meant well it was in no mean spirit.

I can empathize with Ian for sure. I was also surrounded by The Family and so I screamed a lot, banged my head on the wall and crib, had my legs broken, was fed poison Corn Flakes, and was not allowed to tell anyone outside of that clan, and when I did, no one believed me and I got punished even more. Those days are gone since the patriarch and his wife kicked the bucket! I sure did learn a lot about existence, a true education that no human has as extensive any knowledge in, that I posses.

He was basically drunk the whole time in Black Sabbath as well. Actually his drinking is the main reason why Ritchie was so provoked by him all the time. Ritchie wanted him to take the music more seriously, and wait until after the show with the heavy drinking. And IG admits it on the "Nobody's Perfect" live album, where he greets the people of Norway and thanking them for buying him drinks and keeping him drunk from 9 o clock In the morning, and until 9 o clock the next morning. He had a great voice, but he took poorly care of It. That's why he hasn't been able to do "Child In time" "correctly" since 1984.

You clearly don't like him, so you would say that. But the whole situation in that interview invites ridicule. He wasn't a perfect gentleman, but he wasn't offensive either. He's fooling around in a light-hearted way. If you like him, you'd see it my way. But you're entitled to your opinion.

No, Ian was acting like a little boy who just fell in love with a beautiful girl. He was 41/42 in 1987 and the charming German presenter Annette Hopfenmüller (hop miller) was 27/28 Hop is being used to make beer, and it's obvious that there was something brewing inside of Ian's brain (or somewhere else; his pants), knowing the meaning of her surname, and that's why he was thinking of beer...no he was thinking of HER!

That's the problem with German TV, because they don't use subtitles and therefore it had to be translated all the time...and indeed I know that Ian Gillan likes to do all the talking
