The piece of Stonehenge is actually quite small. When they repaired stonehenge in the 50s, they drilled a core out to receive rebar and concrete to reinforce some of the damaged pieces. They used a hollow coring drill, which is a bit of luck as it meant that when it was returned, archaeologists could analyse the inside of the stone to pinpoint where the Sarsens came from (Marlborough Down). The Bluestones are the smaller ones, which are from Pembrokeshire. The big iconic looking ones are Sandstone (Sarsen) which is only from about 30 miles away.

I know a guy who made off with the capital (decorated top portion) of one of the marble columns from the US Capitol building. He was working a large crane in the area; that afternoon he walked by the site of some reconstruction they were doing, drove his truck up to it and surreptitiously placed it in the bed. He's a strong guy; the thing's the size of a bushel-basket and weighs maybe 110 lbs. It's in his garden now.

The Trilithons are all made from Sarsen. There are two types of stone, Sarsen Sandstone which is from Marlborough down 30 miles away. These stones are the big impressive ones, with the lintels on. The other stone is bluestone, which comes from Wales, and these are much smaller, and are currently in a Horse shoe shape inside the main circle. They where moved a lot during the late Neolithic and Bronze Age, at one stage being in a circle around the outside of the sarsens.

The real question is HOW did he get it to his house? Did he roll it on logs, did he send it up river using the most advanced ships of his time THESE are the unanswered questions of our time, puzzling scholars til this very day. Please world, we need your help to figure this out for our present and future generations. Let us identify the type of rocks together, thus telling us the location of settling for a temporary period, then we may gain the chemistry of time, using our most advanced technology available, and even the ancient thiefs of 1950s would be astonished at our accomplishments👨‍🔬.
@zarabada6125
@zarabada6125 5 лет назад
The answer is not particularly impressive. They inserted steel rods into the stone to strengthen and help preserve them. To do that they had to drill a hole through the stone. The guy took one of the cylindrical cores of stone they drilled out. It would probably be fairly hefty but within the realms of one person's ability to carry.
@tombrown407
@tombrown407 2 года назад
The piece he had was small, it was the "negative" from when they drilled a hole to receive concrete and rebar as part of the repair job in the 50s.

This comment is a bit old now, but the replies didn't get the joke apparently. The most likely trick to it was rediscovered by some random in America. They used pebbles and rotated the rocks which makes it surprisingly easy to move super heavy things. I can't remember the specifics sadly but there'll be a video somewhere on it.
