Like him or loathe him Hislop's one of the few people that actually put their money where their mouth is when it comes to talking about the government and other injustices in this country.

How do you loathe Ian Hislop? He's one of the best journalists in the country. He answers to no one and doesn't dance to anyone's tune. If only there were more like him.

@@petergreen2552 The BBC or the British b******* corporation as I like to call them want to have Question Time with the likes of Tommy Robinson Dr John Cooper Clarke,Will Self, Stephen Fry, Ben Elton or anybody with half a brain asking these trumped up MPs and other arse kissing yes men and jobsworths the true and hard hitting questions that we all want answers to, not these rehearsed polished sanguine spurious questions that get patted about on this ridiculous show. That is presided over by Fiona Bruce who sits there as wet as an otter's pocket just dreaming about the massive salary she walks away with every year just for being a smug little c***.

@@petergreen2552 Totally agree. IMO, most of those who take a prurient interest in public figures' private lives and thinks it has no ill effect should have a good look at themselves in the mirror. All those who cried and put fluffy toys down for "Lady Diana" probably bought the rags that paid the wages of the howling mob she was trying to escape in the end. Harmless fun though isn't it

@cockoffgewgle4993
@cockoffgewgle4993 4 года назад
Have you learnt nothing from history? The government controlling the press = fascism.
@ellibod1
@ellibod1 4 года назад
not necessary, it could be communism as well My point is ignoring the problem only allows it to grow & by the time you tried to stop it, it's too late, like a parasite, it has already taken control, you can't do anything about it.. All the better to kill it off now before it gets to that stage.. & sadly, if sacrificing freedom of the press means shutting down poison papers & putting lying journalists in jail, I'd say that's a price worth paying, provided that we do not go so far over-board as to punish people for simple having an opinion. That might sound rather contradictory, but if you really think about it, there's nothing extreme about wanting lairs punished for their lies.. Is there?
@cockoffgewgle4993
@cockoffgewgle4993 4 года назад
@@ellibod1 It's the lesser evil. By far. We already have a very heavily regulated press, especially with regard to broadcast news. And libel laws. Then you're a fascist. You can't put lying journalists in jail because that means the state get to decide what truth is. Truth is hugely subjective. Even in hard science, truth and fact is under constant dispute. The problem with the press is that it's monopolised by the rich. And libel laws make it even worse, because they mean if you set up a small newspaper, you can be sued out of existence with ease. The way to maintain a diverse and free press is to allow press freedom but control the economics of it, don't allow monopolies.
@individualmember
@individualmember 11 лет назад
If you want to see what it could eventually be ramped up to it might be worth looking at what happens in a part of the media that has huge, massive regulation far, far beyond anything that's going to happen with the press. Television. Does anyone have the ability to say what they want on television, say, for example, Ian Hislop? Is it impossible for TV journalists to do genuine investigative reportage, e.g., Panorama or Dispatches? Can TV journalists question politicians aggressively, Newsnight?
@katy3901
@katy3901 4 года назад
I think that's a good point. As much as I agree with Hislop that "don't buy it" is a good individualist response, you'd be hard pressed to claim that the Murdoch empire isn't huge in impact and, in effect, actively harms the "free press".

Ian Hislop is the establishments anti-establishment hero. Normally if people commit a crime they get sent to prison. If people in power commit a crime, however, they have a nasty joke printed about them in his comic and a nasty comment from Hislop who then proclaims they've been dealt with properly, that British justice is exemplary and it's time to move on! Meanwhile, anyway that says hold on shouldn't there be a prosecution (Iraq, Hillsborough etc) is treated as childish or an anarchist

The BBC allows these dissenting voices mostly in the comedy section though, so as not to allow it to be taken too seriously. Hislop isn’t the poster boy when it comes to actual news stories where the government should be held to account, because they don’t want to hold the government to account.

Hislop's fine defence of the free press is now nothing, given he went mad over Brexit, and his position now is "If you supported Brexit, you must be a liar and should go to prison; anyone who supported Brexit gets a free pass, even if they told lies" I say this as someone who voted Remain.
