Ian Hislop is a great example of a guy that went to a private/public school and didn't turn out a twat. He seems to have as much an unbiased opinion on politics as he can have. And I love HIGNFY and Private Eye.

Ian is a sane voice in a mad world and a wonderful wit. It's nice to know that there's at least one person in the UK that is keeping a close eye on Westminster and holding their feet to the fire. Love these long form interviews

Well that was 50 odd minutes of rational discourse and I loved every minute of it. These two together are a political marriage made in heaven. I wish that they did either a weekly or monthly show together. They could put the world to rights in no time.

Love Ian Hislop on so many levels. Could listen to him all day. I'm so grateful for his voice over the last few decades. My only wish is he would do more documentaries as he has a true gift of oratory that I could literally listen to him read the phone book (showing my age) and he would make it insightful.

I love these interviews with Ian and Ollie as it's less an interview but more of a chat between a couple of friends. And considering the absolute dearth of real interviews in the world, a friendly chat between two intelligent, tuned in people is just a pleasant experience.

Here's what I like about Ian Hislop..... He speaks truth to power regardless of which side of the isle he's dealing with. As an American, who is SO TIRED of our own political nightmare, it is refreshing. I still don't know whether he leans left or right because he is so good at holding both sides accountable. That's how journalism should work.

Ian Hislop is one of the very few sane voices in the cess pit of politics at the moment. The discussion of patriotism in this interview in particular resonates with me.

The term “national treasure” gets used too often, but Ian really is one.

Ian Hislop has been on the high wire of political discourse in Britain for over 30 years. He has consistently asked the difficult and challenging questions without coming down on one side or the other. Ultimately that is a role that has a real value. His broadcasts give food for thought, and show paradoxes and hypocrisy in mainstream narratives without providing answers or prescriptions. It is a very technically challenging role, a very emotionally and intellectually challenging role that he has done as a free agent for over 30 years. He is a diplomat to the public sphere of discourse who has paid his own way. In his own very understated, modest and typically British way he manages to engage with audiences and questions them and educate them and enables them to grow and ask questions. He is an educator and a national treasure!

Always a pleasure to watch these long form interviews with Mr Hislop. He is the exemplar for journalists everywhere, the epitome of speaking truth to power.

The fact that the well-spoken, eloquent Ian Hislop with a mental vocabulary as big as the oxford dictionary has to resort so often to the word "extraordinary" really illustrates quite well what times we live in right now.

I love the way the environment of the interview is so eccentrically disheveled ... a shirt hanging on a notice board, a mug, Gillette shaving cream can. Probably just how Peter Cook left it 😃

I've only ever seen Ian Hislop on HIGNFY. It was enjoyable to see him do a straight interview. Love his views and just general common sense which many people lack!

Watching this interview from cross the pond, I found this interview very lively and seriously educational. Could not disagree with a single opinion he expressed... and enjoyed the casual chatty way in which he propounded his assessments. Should watch his work more often!

I both admire and envy Ian Hislop’s innate ability to be cheerful when surrounded by so much shit.

I am not a political animal and the day to day machinations of politicians , who I think of as lying amoral grabbers , are slightly beyond me . This interview was like turning the light on , clarity , intelligence, humour , damn I enjoyed it , even to my belief that Russian money and Arabic potentates are buying great swathes of this country . I find the basic dishonesty of our , er , leaders breathtaking in its dishonest machiavellian scope . I look forward to more of these enlightening programs . 👍🇬🇧

As an Eye subscriber, I sometimes find the mag' a difficult read, because I get so bloody angry at some of the stuff in it. I don't want them to tone it down or stop telling it like it is. I just wish the truth wasn't quite so shitty.

Watching Ian speak at the public inquiry really showed what a clever man he is would love to see him face to face with the tory boys

He'll likely not be best pleased by this but I really do think Ian Hislop is fast becoming a national treasure. Over-used phrase, I know, and he's far too modest to accept it but I think it's true. Private Eye is an exemplar of proper journalism and told alongside great jokes and cartoons too. I also very much enjoyed Oli Dugmore's contributions. In an age of supposedly short attention spans this was a very enjoyable watch.

Just really appreciate your honesty and integrity; I remember your conversation with Neville and laughed out Loud! Lived and worked in Qatar for a year so understand the human rights issues. Thank you again

Moved to Canada a couple of years ago (phew). Very reassuring that at least one national treasure from the old country is still firing on all four cylinders. Good on you Ian, keep fighting the good fight.

Oh trust me, Truss *knew* she was going to be prime minister a good few weeks before it was announced. She sold her house up the road from my family about 2-3 weeks before the announcement, expecting that she would be at number 10 for the next 2 1/2 years lol

Sadly, I don't think we've got close to the bottom yet. But Ian Hislop is a genuine gem.

Ian is amazing, this dialogue gives me hope for Britain

An Irish first cousin (I am a American), while an asssistaht principal in the UK, was immensely amused by the British addiction to queueing up, demonstrated this odd habit by claapping his hands and telling the recreating kids to queue up. He pointed out how happy they looked. Repeated three times. The kids just as happy through each round.

As an Aussie that has lived in the UK, I have turned to Ian over and over again to be my source of reasoned, insightful information of goings on in the UK. He is the kind of guy Id enjoy having a beer with, and one of the few people that would intimidate me with their overall wisdom. He is funny, and charming. Top work mate.

Can this be a monthly thing please? JOE interviewing Heslop. Cracking summary of the UK. Great talking points. "Andrew is a nonce" Had me laughing so much when Heslop quoted that.

Long may the Hislop/Dugmore mentoring sessions continue. I watched the John Sweeney interview yesterday and Olie’s ability to allow the guest to speak with limited interjections is a breath of fresh air. He has a big future ahead of him.

I love Ian Hislop's office, it looks like it's the same way it was since the 80s. Shaving foam behind him and a spare shirt hanging up behind the interviewer with books that probably haven't moved for 10 years. Love it.

We need more people like YOU Russell … people who are not afraid of the Truth or what their “friends” think of them (in their heads) … not afraid of being-or not being “Accepted” by most who haven’t got a clue if they even have a thought about anything meaningful .. happily following the annonymous “”crowd”Happy to be one in a crowd

Loved this review and discussion of 2022. A month in the UK is equivalent to 6 months 10 yrs ago. What a mess we are in ....here and abroad but I still can't get my head around the fuel and power prices compared with Europe ....as per we are paying a lot more for the same product and all this in plain sight.

Having watched the leadership campaign I came to the conclusion that Sunak was just as nuts as Truss, both have the same "tax cuts for the rich penalise the poor" goals but were divided on how to achieve them: Truss wanting to jump in and Sunak wanting to wait and not make it so obvious. That's it.

These need to come in podcast formats, I love Ollie and Ian's chats. But, podcasting it would be easier to listen to.
