Sir Ian McKellen is an amazing man, and an incredible actor. When he was filming LoTR, he was always a "by the book" kinda guy. I believe that is why the movies were so good, well done, and so well received. It still blows me away that during the same time, he was also Magneto in the X-Men movie. Gandalf and Magneto were essentially polar opposites, and he did them both justice! He was able to bring both characters to life, in a very believable way. He was always true to the source material. Small note on your brief point about Cyberpunk, it's not quite expensive fanfiction in that case because Mike Pondsmith himself endorsed what they were doing as canonical, same with Edgerunners. Only a handful of films come out in theaters, and it’s not a hard comparison to note that I used to see more movies that I enjoyed than I do now despite the movies all being in the same category. I SHOULD like these films, yet despite larger budgets and ever more available CGI, I don’t because the writing sucks. Not just in a “meh” way but in a “this wouldn’t be considered even okay as a first draft” kind of bad. That should NOT be an ongoing problem, and yet it is no matter where I look.

It's really simple. all you need to do is write a basic plot summary, toss your own ideology into it, assume that since the guy whose work you're adapting is at least half as great as you are he must have written his stuff the exact same way, ????, and then make vast sums of money.
