Young people -and learners: Ian Paice, because he’s a modest person, will only tell you about grace notes and how good Buddy Rich was -which is true-, but I can tell you that no rock drummer has ever swung like him -keeping that exact time too: no one, believe me.

@@robertoricci3393 All great drummers indeed; and I admire them too. But, none of them has Ian's swing. You should be able to hear it, aren't you? If you're not, listen more carefully, and practise more -if you are a drummer.

Naturally everyone is talking about his impeccable groove however, for me personally what is even more impressive on top of that, is that the drums are not even miked (he isn't using in-ear monitors or headphones either) and that is objective proof that he has unparalleled control over his sticking and dynamics as well. He doesn't drown the room with his drums. Not even a little bit. What a superb execution. What graceful drumming.

Ian Paice's feel! The engine, the soul of Deep Purple. I'm a guitar player and I was always captured by Blackmore's playing but it's Paice's grooves that make it all work.

You know, its always about the trade mark of colaiuta, porcaro, peart, Bonham, copeland, etc, etc...love them too, but for me is all about Cobham, Bruford and Paice...and this man seems a very humble and a down to earth genius what makes him twice great..

Many thanks for sharing Ian. My late father, a semi pro drummer used to rave about Buddy Rich and when I was growing up listening to Deep Purple and go on about the members of the band (MKII at the time) he had many fond words about you. It's interesting that you mention those grace notes as certainly they help add not only timing but subtle emotion moving away as you say from the square not to mention I think it adds to a certain fluidity. Once again it's great to see you play.

И да, я заметил когда играл до просмотра этого видео конечно,что он играет мелкотню на малом - да и он вообще это любит. И приём с бочки на малый удары - это его грувовый стиль.

This is one of Ian's greatest shuffle - groove mixtures in addition to Rosa's Cantina, the ghost notes are placed perfectly. Technically, Ian receives little respect which I have always found astonishing. Take a look at Ian's shuffle and try it in proper time for fun. Speed - time are uniform, the most precise drum break, Ian is Buddy in rock. All pattern, all groove, all precision.

Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it, since I used to play drums. Your style is very clean, juicy and has a typical "signature", whether you play with Deep Purple or when you played with Gary Moore. You certainly have a special sound, far above thousands of studio players, that might technically match or even exceed you. I feel humble honor to be able to watch this and write this comment. Keep rocking!

@IanPaiceDrumtribe
@IanPaiceDrumtribe 2 года назад
Whilst at a friends wedding reception in Germany back in the 70,s,and after far too many beers I ended up on a right handed kit,and so had to play open handed,and of course with my right foot on the bass drum. DISASTER! After what I was told was,according to a friend,about 5 minutes the brides elderly grandmother told me to get off the kit. She said I was,nt very good,after which she took the seat at the drums,and apparently was much better than I was. She was drunk too! So I treat right handed kits,(and of course “open handed” playing), like the “devils setup” they are and leave them alone!!! Ian.

@IanPaiceDrumtribe
@IanPaiceDrumtribe 2 года назад
Hi Dash, I can only really mess around on the snare drum with the traditional grip. I have used matched grip all my life,and I find it really difficult to get round the kit with any power with my right stick pointing a different direction. I know it should be easier,but for me it’s not. But I love the jazzy stuff you can do with the trad grip Ian.

@drumsanddrumming 2 года назад
I thought to ask before but do you any physical training apart from drumming? Like stretching, yoga, qigong, going to the gym?/ Johan
@IanPaiceDrumtribe
@IanPaiceDrumtribe 2 года назад
No yoga,etc. I worked out toward the end of the 70,s that playing drums although physical demanding should not be any more strenuous than necessary. I learnt( albeit rather late), to let the sticks and the drums do most of the work!!!. Drums and cymbals will only go so loud,you can hit them as hard as you want but when you get to 100% that’s it,there is no more volume!!!. Also bringing the stick down from above your head to apply the note will just make you tired,and eventually probably end up hurting yourself!!. It’s the last 3”- 4” (8cm - 10cm),where the stick hits the head,that’s the important bit of the stroke. So I do try to keep fairly fit but nothing out of the ordinary. Ian.
