Dearest Ian Paice, these tears in your eyes when you speak of the giant legendary maestro and wonderful wonderful man - Jon Lord, these tears are shared by so many people. till this day i cannot watch or listen to Jon Lord without feeling deep sorrow.
I remember seeing Deep Purple twice in the 70's and the first time it was nut to butt in the Long Beach Arena, LA, and I was no more than 25 to 30 ft from this man who was just having his way with the Hammond,just rocking this monstrous organ up and down along with a synthesizer, slamming it to the floor on the way down and the music was just amazing. Blackmore, Lord, Gillan, Glover, and Paice.
I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Lord after a concert backstage. Though he was tired he took time to make sure my questions were answered and his autograph was added to my "Purpendicular Tour" T-shirt with all the other band members. It's behind glass in a shadow box, cherished and proudly displayed in my studio.Those great memories flow to this day, when I pause to tell the tale of that meeting with others. Thank you Jon!

Pure friendship ! One true gent speaking so fondly of another true gent. I saw DP play in Manchester just a few weeks ago, and they still dedicate a small part of the show to Jon. Never to be forgotten, always to be missed, respected and loved by so many.

Mr Paice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It greatly appreciated. We all miss him dearly but you knew him better than most. You were brothers, maybe not by blood but in every other way.
Thank you Ian. Jon Lord was the greatest rock keyboardist ever in my opinion. He was a master and his ability to go from hardest rock to symphony scores still amazes me to this day. I cried when I found out he died, and he's the only person in music that had that affect on me. RIP Jon, we miss you terribly.

If you read the comments on all Deep Purple, PAL and Whitesnake videos everywhere on the net, it's not difficult to understand that the whole rock music world still misses such a brilliant keyboard player, as Jon Lord was, to this very day. A musician and key expert by the Grace of God.
I met Jon Lord once and Ian Paice twice. Such gentlemen, beautiful human beings with beautiful hearts. I was not only very happy to meet my heroes but I remember being a kid and thinking how these rock idols could be such polite and humble. I remember two specific things about Jon Lord, meeting him as a kid: Not being a native English speaker I had thought that he really looked and acted like a lord :), and how he attentively listened and answered everything. He will never be forgotten.
I only wish that I had had the opportunity to meet with these gentlemen back in the day. Would have been a real treat. Love Deep Purple so much. Jon Lord, I miss. RIP
Jon Lord was easily talented enough to sit in a keyboard role in any genre, from jazz/rock, to soul/RnB, to prog, to blues-based heavy rock. Amazing player, he was like a masterchef who could make any musical recipe taste like something totally memorable - and make you want to come back to it.
What an emotional tribute. Jon Lord was a magical person as well as a magical player. He is certainly the greatest Hammond player in the genre; played well, it’s an imaginarium of an instrument and he mastered every facet of what it could add to rock music. On a human level, more fans miss him than they miss nearly anyone else who has left us in the rock world.
When Jon Lord left Deep Purple I bawled. When Jon Lord released Pictured Within I rejoiced in the knowledge that he had indeed made the right decision and produced something quite wonderful. When Jon Lord died I bawled. He was one of a small number of musicians that have been a part of my journey from the time I started listening, and I miss him still.
Dear Mr. Paice, I had the honor of seeing you here in Brazil, twice. You and your friend, Grand Maestro Jon Lord. After he left, I never went to a Deep Purple concert again. Sorry, but I can't look at your stage without seeing that English Lord in the pure sense of the word.

What a great tribute to Jon, Ian. I’m in tears. Being a fan, like many here, for 50 or more years, I feel I “know” the band as people, as much as musicians. Remember playing the Gemini Suite album to my school music class. Saw the band live for the first time aged 14 in 1972. Being hit by lightning must come close 😀 Jon’s beautiful solo album Pictured within (dedicated to his deceased parents) helped me through my own mother’s death. Finally a year before he passed, Jon coached music students in Edinburgh prior to them performing his Concerto for Group and Orchestra together. So great to see him passing on his wonderful music to young people, in person. It brought the house down and received two 5 ⭐️ reviews in the national press. No one could or can play a Hammond like Jon. He had a magical talent and his soul came through every note. So missed.
First of all Ian , thanks for sharing this with us ,. Remember that most of us grew up which Deep Purple as our number one band ... debating for years with other friends that each one of you ( DP members ) were better than any other groups .... we loved you guys ... we did ... it hurt us when Jon passed away, ... it did ... we got happy and we got sad with everything that happened to Deep Purple . This video , is one of my favorites because it is personal , from your heart to ours, I’m 61 years old , and always like many of these followers always a true fan . Thanks Ian for that lovely tribute to Jon, who was obviously a lovely man. I’ve been a big fan of Jon’s and in all interviews I’ve heard with people that knew him, not a bad word has been spoken about him. Clearly he is greatly missed.
Jon is a massive loss to music, his fans and clearly to you.. I cried all day when I heard the news... Sadly we are slowly losing a generation of fantastic musicians, the likes of which we'll never see again.
Jon and Ian were best friends, and were together in Deep Purple from Hush in 1968 through to Come Taste The Band with the late Tommy Bolin. Paice, Ashton, Lord followed before Whitesnake, and then Purple again with Ritchie, Roger and Ian Gillan. Jon was a proud Englishman who composed both rock and classical music, and gave wonderful accounts of his adventures in music over the years. The Concerto For Group And Orchestra is a masterpiece. RIP Jonathan Douglas Lord. Thank you for the music.

Bloody hell, hearing the tremble in Ian's voice and seeing his eyes getting all watery, made my eyes watery... Jon Lord is still to this day, THE best Hammond organ and keyboard player in Rock'n'roll. He inspired me to play Hammond, too. When I was 19, I played in a cover band and we played Smoke o.t. Water, Black Night and Highway Star. People from the earlier generation came up to me, and telling me they re-lived their old days. Jon Lord is and always will be my first hero in Rock'n'roll. 💜
I really love all about Jon Lord! He has that glimpse in his eyes and that kind of old fashion noble style in interviews. No prestige, just be there and answer the question. Class and the one and only Mr Hammond!
Ian, Jon was Deep Purple. I can tell that each time you guys go on stage that he's always there! He's simply on your minds and what a wonderful way to communicate with him even today. We miss him, too!
Iconic band. Iconic musicians individually. They are among the greats that showed us how it's done and at musical heights that very few today seem to be interested in reaching.
Thanks Ian, for your special tribute to Jon Lord. I suspect that you miss him much more than you're letting on. He was an old mate, not just a band colleague. You were both there at the start of DP and were the foundation through all the lineup changes. Jon always came through in interviews as an articulate, humorous gentleman. He was an immensely talented keyboards player and his work is his legacy. Ian, please keep sharing your Jon stories with us. Losing an old, longterm mate is heartbreaking to be sure, but your wonderful memories may help reduce the pain a bit. Take care of yourself kind sir. 😎

As a guitarist / bassist who was into blues rock in the 1970s; I was never much interested in keyboards music or keyboards players - all EXCEPT FOR JON LORD. His playing was magnificent and demanded your attention. From subtle to powerful, and with his classical background, what a range he could draw upon. His solos were as exciting as Ritchie's, and I loved the way Purple's music came to accommodate both guitar and keyboard flourishes, harmony parts, and individual solos. That band had two prominent lead instruments. And as much as I loved the guitar riffs etc., it was probably the keyboards that made Deep Purple stand out amongst their peers. Lord had such obvious intelligence, grace, style and wit in his playing. His far too early passing remains a tragic loss.
"Deep Purple in Rock", a present (I was 13 y), the first time I heard this extraordinary Hammond sound and this fantastic symbiosis of classical music and blues/rock (i had classical piano lessons ). Jon shaped generations of rock keyboardists. I miss him!
Thank you for posting this Deep Purple has been my favorite band since 1973 im very glad I seen JON Lord 5 times To me he was the best he is greatly missed . I was very upset to hear of his passing .There will never be another JON LORD .
I’ve being listening to DP since I’ve been 12 yrs old. Second song I recorded off am radio was Smoke on the Water. By the age of 15, I had all the albums to date. Not a small feat when you live 1200 km from the only record store that had them all. Recently, a young friend and I listened to Lazy, from MIJ. When he heard Jon Lord’s intro, he was hooked. Timeless, resilient, talented, professional and industrious. You all are now getting the recognition by young and old that many missed throughout the years. Tightest group I’ve ever listened to, not only because of talent but because of the desire to always perform at your peak for the public. Thx Mr. Paice for this real eyes and ears series of videos that bring to life memories that stirred my emotions and enthusiasm as a young listener.
Loved (and still do) his playing. He brought much to Purple and the whole music world. Don't know, what else to say... I wish he would still be around...
So Heartfelt, Ian. No doubt Jon is looking down with love & a big smile, every time you all play on stage & in the studio. If there is a guardian angel for Deep Purple & his cherished friends & bandmates, it is Jon Douglas Lord.
I went to school with Jon's wonderful daughter Sara. I never told her I was a big Deep Purple fan - that wouldn't have been cool! Such a shame he died, he was making some wonderful music. He was one of those great musicians who influence so many other musicians but still no one sounds quite like him. Like you yourself Ian.
In my long life as a rock and roll fan, I've met so many people who would tell me that the organ doesn't fit into R&R music. Tbh, most of them were 10-20 years younger and started their musical journey in the 80's or early 90's. I would proceed with a lesson on Mr. Lord and after Lazy, Rat Bat Blue, What's Going on Here, Burn and various other DP and Whitesnake tunes, I was able to change many a peoples minds. I'm fortunate to have seen Purple in the 70's and even luckier still to be able to remember it after over 40 years. They broke the mold after they made Jon Lord and every keyboard player in the last 50 years knows that. May he never be forgotten and forever rest in peace.

I saw John in 2000 performing in Katowice, Poland. I was a teenager then but remember him very well. I never thought I would never get the chance to see him on stage again! His music changed me in a way.
I miss your buddy a lot too, Ian. Such a sad, sad loss. But what wonderful entertainment he left us with. Thankyou so much for sharing your thoughts, and even though it's been 8 years, condolences for your loss.
Jon Lord sounds like he was a great person to know. I have only seen a few interviews of him but he always came across as a real gentleman. The intro to this video also showed that he had a sense of humour (and liked to photo bomb on occasion). I still think that the sound he got out of the hammond organ is still one of the signature sounds of rock music.
I really feel for you, Ian. I've only become a DP fanatic in the past year - prior to that I only really knew one album properly - Fireball, which I've adored ever since buying the vinyl in 1972. How little I knew and how many wasted sunsets through the years living in ignorance of In Rock. Machine Head et al... but I've made up for it now and through my devotion to your music I have even made a hard blues rock fanatic of my 18 year old son. And it's through this belated and intense appreciation of the best rock band in the world that I have lapped up DP documentaries and interviews and have got to "know" Jon, who I sense was a gentle, unassuming, softly spoken giant of a man with a remarkable sense of humour and a kindness - which you remarked on - that shone through his words, jokes and mannerisms. It's no surprise that you teared-up on this video because I did the same while listening to you... despite never having met either of you; I believe that testifies to the depth of my appreciation of everything you guys have achieved through the years. Rick Wakeman said he'd never been so badly affected as he was by Jon's passing, and that tells us even more about the man. I thank you guys for your soul-saving music and down-to-earth modesty. Jon was a truly great and wonderfully creative musician. His approach to the keyboards was unique, exiting and full of passion. This was such a nice tribute as it said so much about Jon's character and how much he was loved and respected by someone who had worked with him day in day out for so many years. Deep Purple were and are a unique band, all members virtuosos, still together after so many years and doing it because they love it. If only more bands were like this.
Your words are very moving and endearing. Rest assured Mr. Lord it's now part of the immortal few that will be remembered for many years to come. Meanwhile we all love you and appreciate very much the time you are dedicating to make these videos that help us to go through these strange times.
