Ian Rankin: A Rebus for the Dark Times

We have all become familiar with living through these strange times but for Ian Rankin 2020 has been unusual in more ways than one. For starters, even though the number one bestselling writer thought he was taking a year off, he found himself topping the charts with a book he once hoped would ‘never see the light of day again.’ That book is Westwind, first published in 1990 in an edition of just 1000 copies, but strikingly relevant today in its brand-new edition.
What’s more, his new Rebus novel, finished just a few months ago, carries a prescient (Brecht-inspired) title despite not being about the COVID-19 pandemic at all. A Song for the Dark Times is released in October and sees John Rebus travelling to the north of Scotland to help his daughter, who is in a spot of bother. Rankin joins us for a conversation, in our Edinburgh studio, with leading Scottish journalist Ruth Wishart about Westwind, and a hint of the Dark Times to come. Part of the 2020 Edinburgh International Book Festival Online.

I read The Black Book in a bothe in the deserted village of Pianmannach back in 2003. It was my first Rebus. Sitting there out of my skull for a week on green and the Macallan. We had deer standing around the bothe every night who barely lifted an eyebrow when we peered spellbound out of the main door at them. On the last night, a company of Glaswegian firemen turned up and it is still one of the greatest nights of camaraderie I can ever remember. I won't ever forget it and I hope those guys are still safe and well.

Fantastic. We have the absolute pleasure to be interviewing Ian on our show this Friday. We can't wait. We really hope that one day we can make the Edinburgh festival post covid.

Thank you for uploading this video. My wife has read all Ian's books. I only just came across him in the Video cast "A Word In Your Attic" with David Hepworth and Mark Ellen. This promoted me to ask my wife which of all Ian's books I should read. She suggested "Standing in Another Man's Grave". I read it and instantly have become a big fan of his characters and writing style. Just downloaded "Saints of the Shadow Bible" and will work forwards to his October book. He deserves all his success.

Having just finish reading his latest Rebus book. It's fantastic read and still as great as all Ian's others in this really gritty series. Well done, and look forward to the next one. Thank you Ian.

The rise of the right? Missed that because of all the left-wing extremism.
