State Of Origin 1994: Game 3 - Ian Roberts launches himself awkwardly at Jason Smith, resulting in a KO to Smith who is carried from the field on a stretcher with a broken jaw. Accidental or Intentional?
Don't have much chance when you are looking in another direction and a prop decides to put his shoulder through your jaw. Same happened in the AFL in this era. Old school fans thought it was tough. Also still homophobia even though the toughest rugby league player came out as gay two decades ago.
Those are some sick Asics worn by the team doctor on the thumbnail. Quite similar to the reebok graphlite pros that came out around the same time. The 90s really was an amazing era.
@@BigRamifications Serious as Paul Gallen playing game II in the 2011 Origin match mate. Wish I knew what these Asics are so I can try cop em. They don't make shoes like that anymore.
Mako on 60fps....👌💯true that It's an accident, did it deserve to be a penalty yes....big Ian was known for the big hits in league,he wasn't a dirty player like Paul Harrogan,Blocker Roach,Mark Caroll & others :-)
I remember Gene Miles swinging arm king hit on Roberts, now that was a dog shot from behind. Who did Jason Smith elbow in the face, Spud Carrol I think, another dog shot.
That still makes me feel crook, im a Rabbitohs man and an old story was back when Roberts had not come out as gay but people knew, 2 blokes walked into Souths Club and George Piggins was there and they walked up and said " So George are you playing that poofter Roberts on the weekend " ? His answer was hes just over there go and ask him, 2 blokes never left so quick. I seen a Brookvale Lyons tackle Roberts obviously said something homophobic and Ive never seen a guy punch the fuck out of someone like he did and even upto a few yrs back Gary Jack, was still wanting to take Cuvil action agsinst Roberts for getting belted so bad 20 yrs later he was still getting headaches. He was as tough as they come regardless of his sexuality and you would know all about it if you called him something on the field, believe me Roberts knew what he was doing when he launched himself at Smith. But he could throw them so good that he freightened players and he is one big man and one bloke you wouldn't call something homophobic if you didnt have 10 mates with you, even then he'd still make a mess of most of them. Plus yes he was the first player to come out, but not the first gay man that was playing. But he was just another loss from the Souths nursery to Manly, we bred them back then aswell but it was Manly who would open the cheque book, but he was one tough player
I was living in Townsville when Ian Roberts came to the Cowboys. Use to see him at the gym, bloke was an absolute weapon. At that stage I'm not sure I'd seen a larger human (outside of competitive body builders and they didn't have the height he does), and was a freak in the gym. Genuinely nice bloke as well honestly
My cousin nik kosef can vouch he saw Ian lay three blokes out at a bar in manly before he got big.. they saw him one knew Ian then they thought numbers counted.. they didn't take into consideration that u had two future nsw and Australian rep second rows.even with 20 blokes ud still have trouble...
I worked with him at virgin Sydney a few years ago as baggage handlers. He was a nice guy. I asked him why his here? He said I need money. Can't make enough waiting for movie roles and that. Fair enough.... He was in the super man movie.
Terrific player and yes who someone chooses to keep them warm at night is of utter irrelevance . I am not in the least bit that way inclined but I was saddened to see the number of Manly players the other night refuse to wear the rainbow pride jersey .
Hardest Hitter ever….period And he was gay too….think about that for a sec and let it sink in….he was dominating all these tough nuts and didn’t bat an eyelid…he was a beast!!
It was a head clash. I feel sorry for Queenslanders. No how much they win, they always have an inferiority complex and revel in victim hood. I guess that explains Pauline Hanson. Quite the psychosis
I was in the section if the crowd close to where it happened. Not everyone spotted it first time around (I did), but the crowd sure went feral when the replay came uo
They would've seen the replay on the big screen. They must've introduced the big screen in the 90s. Looks like it was at the old Lang park where Suncorp stadium now sits.
Smith was back in time to play in the grand final that year, his team (Bulldogs) lost, though. He also made the Australian tour squad at the season's end, as did Roberts. This was Roberts' last Origin game, though. Smith played another 15 Origins after this one (his first).
Being a proud blues supporter wasn’t a big fan of Ian Roberts he would intentionally try to injure players also he played for manly to which explains it even more
One of the worst premeditated acts of violence ever seen in rugby league. Roberts should have spent many months on the sideline. An obvious plan to take out the play making debutant.
Sterling and others bullshit on using about 3 sanitised terms for it, before Ray Warren finally admits what it was - a cheap shot, on a support player, off the ball....although even Ray didnt describe it as harshly as that. NSW have been grubs ever since Big Artie and a bunch of no-names won the 1st match....Les Boyd, Mark Geyer, Steve Roach, Paul Gallen and many other cheap-shot dogs.... We will never get sick of beating them.
That was an accident. If he wanted to take out Smith he didn't need to use his head in a tackle off the ball. The bloke could fight like a bag full of cats. Did you not see what he did to Gary Jack? This was back when Origin was brutal and punch ups were accepted if it was a fair fight.
@@spy7538 are you dumb? He thought Smith was getting the ball and went in for the tackle, this happens a lot. He put his head in the wrong position, this also happens a lot. I agree the head collision was accidental.
We all know what you're saying mate, but it's not you with brain damage. Look at Carl Webb, Ray price, wally Lewis and just look at poor Rob burrow the brave little fella won't see 50 and his kids grow up. It wasn't ever considered back then but now we know it would make us sick bastards to do expect them to pay such a big price
Well for starters, we didn't have cards back then. Also, watching this through a 2024 lens doesn't help. You have to remember the world was a different place in 1994 and rugby league was most definitely a different game back then as well.
@@holdthephoneblocker was that not considered foul play in 1994? I think tackling someone without the ball has long been a penalty, and it was late and high.
Yeah, like Meninga smashing Michael Oconnor’s jaw, landing on his face with his elbow. Quite deliberate and not even suspended, if I recall. Should have been charged with assault.
Ian Roberts issue is he is an aggressive homosexual. Because he couldn’t accept heterosexual men in the game, so he used sport of Rugby League to make that statement known. Ian Roberts should be banned from the sport because of dirty tactics.
Banned from the sport? Seriously you’ve watched Origin and seen so much dirty play from both sides? Should they ban everyone that plays dirty or just the ones that get caught? Go watch touch footy 🙄
@@TheSpooky72 I’m not saying ban every little indiscretions that take place between players. But to intentionally to do harm by running up to a person who doesn’t have the ball is not acceptable. All he has to do is tackle him not smash the hell out of him. What’s he trying to prove, his masculinity.
