I'm a aussie old man, and i confess that canadians and americans know how really to make amazing true cowboy songs. Ian Tyson it's not a greatest legend just in Canada but in Australia same. And will remembered ever. Rest easy cowboy.
Very rare to see Ian in Texas. Finally he came to the Kerrville Folk Festival, and told him I’d waited 30 years to see him (since the Ian & Sylvia days of the 60s). He replied, “You need to get out more”, LOL.
He let me use lyrics from "Four Strong Winds" in a book I wrote. He and Gordon Lightfoot remain two of the finest songwriters out of Canada, and the world. RIP Ian Tyson.
@@brucewayne3602 I've loved his music since I was fifteen. I was heartbroken when he lost his voice but l own almost all his music. So long Ian. RIP You will always be loved.
We lost one of our country music icons with Ian's passing. I so remember stopping in Longview and the store there was dedicated to him. RIP Ian....we will still have your music to listen to.
Met him and his wife at the Longview Hall, after work, in my Carhartts. It’s was a Tom Russell concert. Super small venue and as Albertan as they get. My dad loved him. RIP🩶
I just learned of his passing and Alberta has lost a true Alberta child. Thank you for all of the outstanding music. Like many others, it truly touched my life. God rest his soul.
No longer a fan of american commercial C& W music, but still have a great affection for Townes, Emmy Lou, Jerry Jeff, Ian&Sylvia, Steve Erle, a damn few others. Great stuff.
This song takes me back to those days (and nights) I spent with my Katie. I pray, where ever she is, she finds peace, love, and happiness. I pray she finds a man that treats her the way I tried to. God bless you, my long lost Katie love.
This song is one of the last memories i have of my father before he passed away, he and his buddy Jim were avid moose hunters and always brought cassettes with music to listen to since the area they hunted was too far away from any radio stations and this song was one of his favorites, anyway for 3 days before he passed he was in a coma due to his organs shutting down and my daughter and i were in his room when my daughter played this song, he opened his eyes and smiled briefly before his eyes closed again, he passed away at 5:00am the next morning at the age of 92, we played this song at his funeral too.
Beautiful story, music has a special way of connecting people back to their past, they have actually seen dementia/Alzheimer’s patients in nursing homes light up when shown the music of their youth
May one of our long lasting Canadian legends always be remembered. Both him and Sylvia along with Gordon Lightfoot will always be my Canadian Favorites. May the good Lord be ready for him to enrich all the old souls in harmony upstairs. Rest in peace Ian.
At the time this was popular I was going between LA and Durango to buy property. I played this song so much my wife asked me if I had a girlfriend in Colorado.
I always liked this song by Jerry Jeff. Nice to see him introduce Ian to do it. Can't say one version is better than other. That's a compliment to both the songwriter and the singer. Awesome song! Would love to hear a younger red dirt artist remake this I'm sure one of them could do it justice! It's a great song!
Find me a finer. or more original cowboy song than this one. Skillfully composed and crafted by the GREAT Ian Tyson. He is a Canadian musical TREASURE !
Met him & Sylvia @ Red Deer Lodge in 1990. Country bar packed. He walked through the crowd to shake my hand for playing this song. What a Gentlemen...honor to meet both of them Thank you for All Great Music💥
Ian and Sylvia are parodied in a really loving way in "A Mighty Wind." I knew Tom Russell was a writer on this song, I didn't know Ian Tyson was another one. My god. Read up on the Ian and Sylvia story.. is this song about Sylvia?
I fell in love with Ian's songs when I first heard this song.... Ian writes the very best of out west music, one can visualize the beauty of cowboy country & history amongst his songs.
Oh my, my!!!! Can't get any better than this!! Navajo Rug is one of my favorites and Tyson is such a prolific song writer and his voice is angelic. I hope he's doing well, now. Thank you SO much for posting. Sitting here with me hubby and just crying, laughing and enjoying. Peace to ya. skil
i worked on an arapahoe/shosone reservation in wyoming many moons ago and someone had the Jerry Jeff version of this song on tape (well before cd's); we played it over & over & over again. i never heard it since. tonight i got a wild hair & found both here - gotta say Tyson's voice blew me away! i love this version. thank you very much for posting. "shades of red and bluuue..." breaks my heart, to this day! dern you, Katie. ;)
you can always tells the workin cowboys by what they wear on thier feet...the city cowboys wear pointy boots...a workin cowboy wears rounded toes and flat heels because he know how easy it is to get hung up on a bronc with pointy boots and your feet not gonna fall tyhrough a stirrup with flat heels
I actually ate in this very coffee shop and didn't know about this song until years later. Made me homesick, for the LIttle Colorado and the Cameron Trading Post. You don't find things that last anymore like a double woven Navajo.
I first met Ian in the early 1960's in the storm that U. Utah Phillips called "The great Folk Scare." A whole passel of folk singing pilgrims tied up at the hitching posts in Greenwich Village, New Yawk. Names like Ramblin' Jack, Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, P P and M and many others waltzed to a different Matilda. Ian stood apart with his wonderful western voice. Whenever I want to hear a song of prairies, horses and love. I like to wrap myself in the warmth of a "Navajo Rug."
Just discovered Ian Tyson. Pride myself on having good tastes in music, but you can always discover something new. Was watching the full concert film from the Last Waltz and Neil Young sang one of his songs and mentioned him by name. Really like what I've heard.
My favorite song .. I am a SO an IAN TYSON fan ... my children sat on my lap and sang/recited his songs as I attempted to sing! I met/saw Ian at a concert with one of my girls at my side. I bought a CD and had it signed and I commented "My kids have listened to your music since they were born." LOLOLOLOLOL ... his comment was "They must be a bunch of renegades" LOL they aren't. I love it ...
