We see activity at Dublin Connolly and then an "A" Class locomotive - 057 is seen shunting at Tralee. Later the same day at Mallow, 057 is running around its train to continue to Cork and 076 hauls a Cork to Dublin Heuston train.
We now continue to Cork where 188 is seen running around its train and backing down to take the train on to Cobh.
Seen from the cab of 188, we take a trip down to Cobh and back to Cork.
Back at Cork, an "A" Class is seen shunting in the yard.
At Dublin Connolly, 154 passes through the station and backs on to its train and then we see it departing after a DART train enters the station.

The drivers weren't afraid to give the 071's the holly!!! Great locos ideal for our railways.

Whether you think the 071s were the best (my wife and I do) you have to admit they were the loudest !

Great to hear the roar and screech of the GM engines, and see the steam heat escaping again. "Running around" was the theme of Irish railway operation for decades until the advent of the diesel units.

I’m Irish myself but I love cab banter and the Cork accent. I guess that’s all gone now too.

The 1957- wouldn't be surprised if there is one or two still knocking around Crossley-Vickers and the 1978- still in use General Motors locos, built to last, the likes of them wont be seen again.

And re Fota (on the local Cork Kent- Cobh line) it is unusual for 2 reasons: (1) along with Manualla Jct up in Mayo, it has no road access and (2) alone on the Irish network, I think, it has stepped platforms..

I wonder why the 071’s rev up as they come to a halt?

Great video John of workings now past. The 12:45 loco 057 ex Cork shunting the liner in Tralee before it goes back on to the passenger for the 17:25 to Cork. A job I did very often. The late Ray Bluett is the driver on 188 to Cobh , a gent. His son Ger is in the Railway now.

I’ve vague memories of being in a mark III coach on the way to Dublin circa 1990 and it had airline-style seating. Then in later years when I was travelling more frequently the mark IIIs all had seats of four around a table. I have to admit I thought I was mis-remembering the airline-style seating, but 13:05 confirms they did have it. When were they refitted?

Hi, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question, but I'm sure someone else might!

Some Mark 3 had airline seating, and some had a bay of 4 seats round a window. Also if the Mark 3s had opening bucket type windows at the top, they were the Mark 3 suburban coaches that were operated with a driving trailer in push pull mode.

hard to believe CIE was something the irish could once have been proud of. Now its the most disorganised pthetic rail network in all of Europe. Shame on the directors and CEO's, they killed rail travel in Ireland just like Beeching done in England

It just wasnt financially viable to have trains running all over the place. Most people now have use of the bus or a car
