Those Ibanezes also have the most comfortable locking nut I've ever encountered. I love that Ibanez is always progressing and finding ways to improve hardware. On an OFR, the locking nut is sharp and unergonomic, basically everything about an OFR is unergonomic. Yet Ibanez and Gotoh are the only ones ever improving the Floyd Rose design. Other companies just think "meh good enough." Rock on Ibanez.

One of the reasons why Guthrie Govan doesn't use a locking nut is because he hates how sharp and uncomfortable the Original Floyd Rose locking nut is. I wasn't even aware that Ibanez improved the locking nut until I went and tried out a floral JEM a few months ago.

The body of these guitars is made with "crotch mahogany". Only Steve Vai would make a guitar called "The Woody" and make it from "crotch" wood.

Being a physicist doesn't matter. Having experience in making guitars matters. Even Ibanez realizes this, that's why they have come out with the AZ line to complete with PRS and Suhr. I have a RG prestige and a PRS, the RG doesn't come close in tonal quality but man does it play nice.

Just got mine about an hour ago, and wow! the picture doesn't do it justice in the real. it is a really nice guitar, very impressed and the dark matter pickups are all that and then some!! +Rob Chapman I actually met Steve Vai when he came to Vegas for the 25th Anniversary of Passion and Warfare. He is the nicest guy and he could listen to me go on forever about how he's my hero and changed my life as a musician, including getting my JEM signed by him. If you ever get the chance, he's one of the nicest guys. Love your videos and keep up the good work. Cheers

Burr wood actually not spalted. Spalting is caused by fungus, where as burl is where those knobby bits are on trees often with many little branches growing out.

I have this guitar. And I love it. I’ve seen quite a few bad reviews on it. Which I don’t really understand. Although I’ve never played another Jem. So I can’t really compare. But it’s a great guitar to play. What I love is when I have the whammy bar facing to the back of the guitar. And then anything I play has that flutter sound without touching the bar. All I need to do is hit strings a bit harder. Fun times.

I bought this guitar from a large online music supply store in the U.S. The wood looks amazing, but I'm having a bit of a problem with the neck pickup. It's mounted at a steep downward angle toward the fretboard. I'm not certain if it's a problem with the mounting flange on the pickup itself, or a problem with the cutout in the wood where the pickup is mounted. As I type this, I'm still in communication with the retailer to see what we can do about it.

I think those twin rods are running parallel down the neck with the truss rod inbetween them. The rods just serve to keep the wood rock steady. Saw a crimson guitars build where he did the same thing but with carbon fibre rods! Great vid guys.

That guitar looks amazing. The knobs are really interesting, a wood structure, and the pickups are GORGEOUS. But when I played one, one of the frets stuck out so much that the high E string got caught under it when I strummed the guitar hard - and that isn't acceptable for an instrument with this price. I was really shocked at how sharp the fret edge was, because you hear a lot about Ibanez and their fret end treatment.

I met Steve Vai and Joe Satriani or their first G3 tour. Got to shake Via's hand and talk to them and get their autographs. It was at a meet and greet at Tower Records Boston. Vai was digging my friends tattoo of Frank Zappa. 1996.

Go on EBay ...look for a Japanese made early to mid eighties model of Squire, Fender, etc. ...top quality change from £500. Built beautifully.

It's actually a Crotch Mahogany top, it's not rosewood. And it's a special veneer for the pickguard

Very impressive for an Indonesian guitar. I bought an Ibanez RG made in Indonesia quite a few years back. It's nice, and I love it because it's mine, but it's nothing super special. But ultimately, if you want a high-end Ibanez, I believe it's best to go with a Japanese model.

FYI that pickguard/scratch plate is not spalted maple. Maybe birdseye or buckeye but spalted maple doesnt look like that.

I put the Gravity Storm in the neck of my '92 Washburn N4. Even here you can hear how round the highs are and thick the mids are compared to the bridge. Great for Jazz too .. but it's just dark enough to take the shrill out of the high notes. Most neck pickups have a scooped EQ I just don't like with spiky highs and hollow mids.

I've tried a million recipes to make brussel sprouts edible, don't think I'm married to any one of them yet - but I think the trick is in each case to blanch them for a couple of minutes prior to doing anything else, whether pan fried, bake, etc.

Actually, the best recipe for Brussels Sprouts is to coat them in olive oil with salt and pepper, then put them single layer on a cookie sheet and roast them.

ever thought of an all Jem guitar review ?....from the original , all incarnations since , to the newer jem jr and woody.....play them all , and compare how each plays , sounds and feels. I think that would be an excellent ( possibly longer show...haha ) show !! I know Id tune in for sure !! I keep debating....which one ?...which is better ?...which sound is what Im looking for ?...etc.....food for thought !! Love the show !!!

It looks like the pole pieces on the pickups can be adjusted individually... that's an interesting feature, though I'll never be good enough to justify the time twisting 12 allen wrenches per pickup 5 degrees at a time over and over again to get each string dialed in just right.

I've worked with several woods and I can assure you 100% that the pickguard and headstock cover are poplar burl....not spalted maple. I didn't look it up, but if Ibanez advertises this as spalted maple, they need a slap in the face

The pickguard is not spalted maple. It's maple burl.

not two truss rods. The KTS system is two titanium rods that run the length of the neck on each side of the truss rod to add stability. Still just one truss rod in this guy. I have the KTS system on my Premium Universe and they work great

Andreas Davour I agree there should be more variety. Sounds daft, but one of the reasons I don,t much like Guthrie Govan as a player is that he always uses the same ugly sig guitar.

I think there's something to how it's setup as well. It sounds shrill in my ears. Maybe Rob and I have different ideas on eq.

You don't like Govan as a player because he always uses the same guitar? How does that compute? Surely you listen to a guitarist for their music, not what gear they use.. that just seems like you actually don't care about music, only image. As for the Kraken, I think it's pretty niche really. It suits the bitey metal styles that Bea often plays beautifully but it doesn't seem to handle other styles very well.
