I bought this Ibanez Prestige RG652AHM on Cyber Monday of 2017 and hadn’t changed the strings since then!🤫
So playing it the other day I noticed that the strings were kind of flat 🤣, and the action was super high. I then put a straight edge on it and discovered that it had a banana neck and needed a truss rod adjustment.
Surprisingly there are very few videos out there on how to adjust the string height on an Edge Locking Tremolo System, so I figured it out myself and now share it with you.

I have the exact same guitar. I have .010 neck relief at the 8th fret. The low E string height is 1.5mm at the 12th fret and 1.25mm on the high E string also at the 12th fret. There is no fret buzz at all with these settings. The strings are a little tight for bending on the high E around the 20th fret, but overall the action is perfect and low. I just picked up a brand new RG550 Genesis (purple neon) and attempted to make the same settings. What I found was slight low E string buzz from frets 1-5ish when fretting chords, not when playing open. My guess is the Wizard HP neck on the Prestige has a better fret leveling job from the factory than the regular Wizard neck on the RG550. Both neck relief settings are exactly the same. I had to raise the action a little (≈ 1.7mm low E and 1.5mm high E) on the RG550 to get rid of the buzz, but the playability is still great and the action is still low. I'm planning to level the frets on the RG550 in the near future (as well as other mods, like getting rid of the middle pickup and throwing in a super distortion or tone zone in the bridge). That's the only thing I can think of that's different in the setups. I would like both guitars to be the same (OCD). Anyone else have any ideas? I'm all ears.

Thanks for the video. I have exactly the same model but the locking studs seem to bottom out before I can set a desirable level of action, they are just too long - my guess is that the inserts should've been seated deeper at the factory. As a result - the neck is shimmed at the heel to reduce action. Is there a shorter version of these locking studs, e.g. 2mm shorter?

Cool axe. I gotta say though you should have flushed up your floyd rose with the base of the stock before doing anything to the truss rod . It can be adjusted Vai the springs below. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't need to adjust anything other then that in order to get your string height lower. My experience is it should be a balance between getting the plate perfectly flush and then doing any small adjustments from that step on ,often you have to spend time tweaking it back and forth ,re tuning and detuning before you get it perfect. On average I'd say changing the strings on my esp with a floyd rose locking nut takes me an hour plus to get to the sweet spot. If your just re stringing the guitar and the current strings are set to where you like them and the plate of the rose is flush than often I will stack broken popsicle sticks in behind the spring box in the underside of the guitar to limit movement so my bridge dosnt tilt forward creating more guess work then needed . Once it is restrung I can remove them and then do any small adjustments in a quick amount of time. Thanks for the video though man. Gorgeous guitar😎😎😎

Yep..I have a block of rubber that I stick under the string lock bolts..I barely push down on the bar and then set the rubber in its place and then raise the bar..the tremelo baseplate stays flush with the guitar body and just get the strings on it then do the rest.
@Owlun
@Owlun 6 месяцев назад
Floyds do sit flush with the body, but the Ibanez LoPro bridges are a little different. The base plate of the LoPro is angled / ramped a bit, so it'll appear as though it's set up incorrectly, but that's just how it's designed. That said, his bridge appears to be pulling forward ever so slightly, but not by a whole lot. If you pause the video at 5:39 you'll see there's a line on the side of the bridge that allows you to gauge your setup. Cheers

First thing I noticed was that his rose is sitting an extreme angle . Absolutely needs to be flush with the stock
@techdan7098
@techdan7098 Год назад
@@jayceeadams4379 I've been running into this issue with this guitar. I bought new springs i've done all kinds of adjustments and for some reason my rose sits at a angle like his does. I even purchased new springs from floyd rose and same thing (the guitar is fairly new) I've done all kinds of adjustments and the rose sits at an angle just like his. I wonder if this type of guitar is meant to be like that. I took it to get serviced and it came back the same way as his. All my research on floyd roses shows it a more leveled and I was wondering what was wrong with my stuff.
@jayceeadams4379
@jayceeadams4379 Год назад
@@techdan7098 do you often switch tunings? Or do you typically play in one tuning I have an rrx24 Rhoads with a floating trem. I keep that guitar in drop c tuning and use my hard tails for songs that I need to tune differently for. I'm sure you already know this but when I first started doing my own adjustments on the floyd rose I didn't realize that by switching my tuning I would through out all my heights. I took my ltd model in to get the floyd set once and it Also came back at a super narly angle. Whom ever serviced it was just lazy and incapable. I spent a while getting the plate flush and micro adjusting and then it played like a hot damn. The other thing that could be happening is if you don't release the string tension when adjusting the height of the plate you can do microscopic damage to the bolts that has an impact on the guitars ability to stay in tune. I'm with you man. These set ups can be incredibly frustrating and defeating at times. I hope you find a fix that works. I suppose also that even if he has set it at an angle and it plays well for you then I guess it's okay, it's just not typical is all and most players would probably agree that it should be flush.
@dansalmonzzz5602

excellent video. it says in the ibanez manual if anyone reads it ! I always wondered, if bass and treble sides are different height, doesn't that mean the bridge is resting on the knife edges lop sided ? or is it just microscopic amounts ? probably. Also when i try stringing from the tuner towards the trem I cannot feed the strings UNDER the bar behind the nut easily (to use the ball end at the tuner)got any tips ?
@saadshah7857
@saadshah7857 2 года назад
The bridge is probably not lopsided but designed to account for the small difference in height from low to high strings. Since most Prestiges have a fretboard radius of 16 or so, I imagine the bridge takes that into account as well without needing to adjust individual string height. As for your second question, you can use small needle nose pliers to help the string under the retainer by the nut. No need to take it off everytime. And yes, keep the ball end at the tuning posts and you will need very minimal winding.

I always get that trem plate lined up with the axis of the body level to the cutout edges, looks like it might bottom out during extreme divebombs?
@leotomlinson5486
@leotomlinson5486 3 года назад
The Ibanez edge bridges are slightly different to the regular double locking, he's lined up the actual bottom of the bridge with the top. The slight difference here is that the ibanez edge bridges all have that slant in them, the knife edge is still lined up with the body level. The slant is more prominent on the zero two bridge (I know that's what he's calling the one in the video, the video featured one is the zero one iirc). The zero one bridge is much more similar to the classic floyd rose with the protruding string clamping screws that are pushed down to fine tune. The zero two uses a different system with the string clamping screws set into the string pockets and a spring and block mechanism to adjust tuning (the zero three is some weird hybrid between both the zero one and two but thays a whole other story!). I hope this answers any questions dude, lmk if you have anh more :)

Just came across this as I have the same model. There are a handful of ibby bridges - the 652 is the original Edge trem. The Edge II you speak of does not use a locking nut. I have no idea behind that concept - the locking nut is essential to the system.

A word of warning here. In the guitar body there's a threaded insert. If you adjust the bridge height without backing off that small lock screw it can result in that threaded insert seperating from the body (it's most likely glued into place) and from then on it will just spin as you turn the bridge posts. Adjustment will be almost impossible and it will need bonding back in. I bought a used 7 string where this had happened, and I ended up getting the bridge post cavity dowelled and re-set. It's also a watch point for anyone buying used like I did.

Word of advice. Don't adjust the string height while the guitar is in tension like it's being shown here. Take off the bridge and loosen the strings first. Otherwise you'll screw the knife edge against the posts.
@MegaCosmoVision
@MegaCosmoVision 2 года назад
Nonsense. This is a prestige with the original edge which has hardened steel knife edges that are better than most bridges out there. This “ruin knife edges” nonsense came from people adjusting cheap ass bridges such as floyd license and others. Ibanez says on their lanual that you can adjust the action with tension. They’re designed to be adjusted that way. In summary the fear of ruining knife edges came from retards adjusting the action with tension on cheap bridges that dont have hardened steel edges. In those bridges then releasing tension will help but theyre crap anyway and knife edges will go to crap eventually from simple use of the bar. Not to mention most floating bridges out there are cheap. You will only get an original floyd or a original edge around $800-1000+ and most people dont buy guitars in that range. Most people buy cheap guitars with cheap parts made in korea, Indonesia, china etc

C'mon man..its like tightening a regular screw or bolt down..clockwise tightens which lowers the post and bridge and counter-clockwise raises the post which raises the bridge.

Ya know, I think more geetar players need to have at least some basic knowledge of guitar maintenance. Some guitars require more than others. My PRS needs very little compared to my Strat which seems like it needs a rod adjustment every other month. Nice video sir!

you do not loosen the strings before making an action setting? Your floyd must be parallel to the table, however, in my opinion...

I spent forever looking at leveling floyd rose and my ibanez prestige seemed to be so high up in the back of the tremelo i thought i was doing something wrong. After looking at your video I think yours looks exactly the same. I guess this is normal but man I spent a LONG time trying to figure out what was wrong and why my tremolo was not leveling like other guitars with a floyd rose.

There is a little rectangle on the side of the edges baseplate. I set this level with the body on mine. From factory it was sitting a few degrees out

Dude, you have to remove the floating floyd to adjust the string height. check the floating blades that ride on those screws now, i bet it has a serious burr or worse.

Jonathan that's a myth. Tuning the bridge screw adjustment will not damage the knife edge.
@jonathanpascal25
@jonathanpascal25 3 года назад
@@stephenwilliams1747 i wanna see pictures of proof on that one. you have a blade under tension, and it fits in a tight groove, and then you twist that post. that won't dull the blade? unless it's a completely different design im aware of.
@stephenwilliams1747
@stephenwilliams1747 3 года назад
Jonathan I did forget to mention that you should lose all tension on the strings before turning the bridge post. But trust me. I am 45 years old and been playing Ibanez guitars for 30 years. As long as you take the tension off the strings before you make the adjustments you'll be fine.
@jhmusic1
@jhmusic1 3 года назад
@@jonathanpascal25 as long as both the knife edge and stud are clean and the stud isnt dirty or damaged, turning them under full tension wont damage the knife edges or posts. The Ibanez manual itself even says nothing about loosening string tension before adjusting. The knife edges on any high end Ibanez trem are made of steel and all (I think) variations of the Floyd Rose have steel base plates, they'll all handle height adjustment under tension just fine

I hope you didnt listen to that CRUZ tool ruler.. lol.. Ibanez with the locking trem and flat radius fingerboard can easily go under 1.0mm or (2.5/64).. with NO BUZZ. amazing design guitars.. those trems are awesome.. Have an 89 RG560 with original Edge.. still going strong.. love the skinny WIZARD neck now that i am older.. and arthritis is setting in ..

Aaand you dulled the the trem blades by moving the post under tension. Bad move. I agree with the comment below, you should've adjusted the tremolo springs to go back to zero/level

i used to change strings as often as twice a week, but now only every month or so. I got in the habit of wiping strings down with cleaner after playing - now they last about 5x longer, and are always slinky schmoov every time i go at it.

Josh good eyes..it should be level with the body. I have RG550 LTD (limited edition) bought a new in 1997 it is also important that always detune guitar when you raise or lower actions because of studs/knife edges.. they can quickly wear. On my guitar, after over 20 years I have no problems..I only replaced the Ibanez E power springs The RG550 was my first proper touring guitar.

his bridge sits fine. this is not a floyd rose, these bridges are adjusted a bit differently. there are two lines at the sides of the tremolo which should be parallel to the body not the trem itself. you can see that the screws that are holding the strings inside the bridge are parallel to the body so the bridge looks perfectly leveled to me

@Poo Ninja I also didn't loose the string tension, and remove the springs while turning the spuds for low action on the bridge, which was a mistake, but I didn't know this, I might have damaged the knive edges, but hopefully I didn't. And some even recommend to remove springs as well, before adjusting the bridge height. In case, wanted to let you know as well :P.
