Should you turn IBIS on or OFF on your Sony camera when using a gimbal? If you have a Sony A7IV, A7III, FX3, or A7S III you probably know what SteadyShot is. In this video, I show you if you should set it to Active or Standard or turn it off when using a gimbal.

Finally a great video on this subject. Many thanks for your time and effort Joris! For real estate video - straight walk through with gimbal I will use Active or Standard Steady Shot. For pan or tilt shots with Gimbal, will follow your suggestion to turn OFF stabilisation. I also read in Sony A7Siii manual to switch OFF Steady Shot when using tripod. So I assume when using tripod + fluid head or slider the Steady Shot should be OFF.

Thank you! You’re one of the few people I’ve seen mention how bad IBIS can be with panning. Its also the same with handheld. When going handheld, ibis does make it more “stable” but those jitters are just as bad as shaky footage in my opinion. The best look is ibis OFF with a heavy rig, but of course thats not always a good option

such a big difference I alwasy turn if off beacsue I thought it would fight it. my footage with the gimball always looked like a tiny wobble was there. I going to to try tomoorow with the standard setting and see how that goes. I dont normanl y make a lot of sudden movements anyways. Thansk a lot for the comaparsion shots!

Great video 👍 I have IBIS always on in standard because if it is off the censor is not level and can jump up and down. I learn'd the hard way when I was taking photos in timelapse mode and the censor moved some times when the shutter curtain moved.

In my Sony A7IV and Tamron 25-200 F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD active IBIS is working without problems

For me, it would be a good practice to just turn it off and just stabilize the video more in post. Stabilizing an almost already stabilized video would only cost a little bit of cropping and quality lost anyway. But I agree, people have different opinion on this and what I told is what works for me.

That's the first time, that I hear that the active stabilization could be limited to Sony glass. Most of the time, I use my Tamron 28-75 and it works just fine - even with the 35-150 mm. When I received my A7IV I did not recognize, that the focal settings of the stabilization where set wrong / not on auto. This resulted in veeery wobbly footage and I thought 'this couldn't be the IBIS they promised me' 😅 but after I found out and set it to 'auto' everything works fine and I sacrifice the crop on the active stabilization for that extra stability. Btw: did you use your mist filter for the camera menu shots?

No, shot the menu with my canon m50. No filter. I guess it's the cheap glass making it all bloomy and glowy 🤔

with the A7S3 together with the Zeiss Batis 18mm/2.8 there was uncorrectable wave-like shaking with switched on IBIS and Steadyshot

Exactly! had the same issues. Very disappointing. Wish I knew this sooner! I think the key here is panning, tilting and video camera movements. Many people on here not getting the point of the video saying they "leave it on" Yeah its great for stabilizing STATIC hand held shooting. Not video.

How can I tell if my IBIS works as i should? Im using the a7 III with the Sony 24-105 f4, and the stabilisation is kind of....very bad. Tried another a7 III with at Sigma 100-400 and the stabilisation was spot on! (i was trulu impressed - and that on 400 mm!!). My question: Is the stabilisation on the 24-105 bad, or could there be anything wrong with the IBIS of the camera? Any way to check that with the only lens I have? (and do the stabilisation in the lens work together with the a7 III IBIS, or does it work by itself only?) A bit dissapointed really... =/

Truth is the a7iii stabilization is bad, i have 2 a7iii and u literally can t shoot handheld with em, but they are good on a gimbal tho

Seriously? I shot an entire wedding with standard on at 24mm - 50mm'ish on my DJI RS2 and didn't notice any jerking or unintentional movement. Is it really in standard too? I get active since it's on the digital end but damn I'm going to have to put it through the ringer and see if it hits standard too!

Yea its definitely noticeable on Standard IBIS too. You can get away with it on wider lenses with not much camera movements. But when you use longer lenses and are panning or moving alot, the jitters are there…ive spent hourse trying to eliminate them in post but nothing helped. Its funny because your eyes get used to the jittery footage. It wasn’t until a friend of mine pointed it out when he used my camera once. I cant unsee it now

I used to know someone who suffered from IBS. Sad really, especially on long trips or going to the movies. Went like a goose. It wasn't very focused though, all over the place. Oh wait, you said IBIS. Oops...

Slow motion is ridiculous now.. especially wedding videos. They cut out the best parts like when people are yelling, falling, and doing stupid things...I had a client that didn't want any slow mo, or fake music..She wanted footage with the yelling, chaos and fun involved in the wedding..The younger Gen are getting tired of slow mo and fake sound (music) as well..

I think is a balance, dont abuse slowmo, only in shorts parts when you want show the facial expressions (for example) or some "epic moment". Also, depend too of video intention, I edit highligths normall, and the majority of my scenes are in normal velocity, and only some parts in slowmo, the audio is hybrid between real and background music, I don't use Gimbal cause in my case, I use differents prime lens cause I prefer have diferentes effects with the focal distance, I make the shots short with boths hands and little movments

You need a balance. I absolutely hate wedding films that are just dialogue and voice overs. Don't get me started on still frames and lack of movement. You need motion and to create an actual scene out of every moment.

new to hand held video. didnt know this, and had been using gimbals and a video fluid head recently and oh my god, terrible results! Nikon Z6II and I didnt realize the NIKON VR would actually hinder the process of making smooth camera movements. Pretty bummed because I lost a whole day of footage due to this. Looked great as I was making the shots. Got home to edit and was quite disappointed at the results.

I only ask, because in my personal opinion, the footage at 5:44 - none of that is usable to me... it's all out of focus and it's just motion blur, so I was wondering if this is because the ibis is having to work too hard because of vibrations ? Or is that just how the a7siii is supposed to perform?

Hey Joris I made an Affordable Super Saiyan Aura around my body, but I'm not able to track it. I used Normal Tracker going to match move setting, It didn't work out. I used Planar Tracker as well.
