I read from the excellent book 'Ibn Taymiyya (Makers of the Muslim World)' by Dr Jon Hoover www.amazon.co.uk/Ibn-Taymiyya... Apologies for the poor visual quality of the video 😬 www.patreon.com/Bloggingtheol... / freemonotheist
“What can my enemies do to me? My paradise is in my heart, it is with me wherever I go. To imprison me is to provide me with seclusion. To send me into exile is to send me away in the Path of Allah. And to kill me is to make me a martyr.” - Ibn Taymiyyah
It is mind boggling that why he was imprisoned, He gave fatwa on “divorce by oath”. But Administration didn’t like that & they put him in jail. And he died there. May Allah grant him Jannah . Rahimahullah. They same exact Fatwa is used across all islamic countries now. Subhanallah. Allah is Great.
@@Bilal-BS That same fatwa brother is against Sunnat Al rasool because he declared that talaq has to have a witness just like nikah and is considered one Talaq, not 3, permanent, final with no chance of remarrying. Thank you Professor, Ibn Taymiyyah, a great person and he is the first person to criticize Aristotelian logic, and his criticism is very scientific, and may God forgive him.
Ibn Taymiyyah🌷, the greatest scholar I have ever come across, I owe him forever! I was confused, Allah SWT guided me through his books, numerous philosophical questions were clarified by his sharp insight.
@@samforest2433 But did you know why and in which context he said that. He was debating with the Asharites (the rationalists) about the meaning of verse where Allah (God) said for example, his hand is over the believers. The Asharites argued it is a metaphorical word and meant Allah's or God's power. Ibn Taymiyyah argued otherwise and said it is literal and gave the examples of two people. One physically disabled and the other normal. He then asked them which is more perfect in their eyes. They replied it is the man who has hands, feet etc and is perfectly formed. He said when you say Allah does not have hands then you are saying you human beings are more perfect than the Creator. So the argument was lost. He was indeed a genius in debating, hence had many enemies of his times. We Muslims believe Allah (God) has hands, feet, legs, eyes etc but nothing resembling us as He himself describes to us "Nor is there to Him any equivalent." Surah 112, Verse 4 and also "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer." Surah 42, Verse 12.

@Matt Harvy "the druze, the alawites," - the shi'a pagans with the tatar attacked Bagdad... thats like saying Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings on him is wrong to defend. I doubt he made takfir on Asharis who like christians mix greek ideas into Islam but some sufis prayed to graves as pagans. he taught defense and liberated many... " European chroniclers " - thye aren't the authority on Islam...
As a revert to Islam I find you blog one of my favorite. Your points are clear, your videos informative . In an age with much hatred towards Islam and Muslims you shine a light on ignorance. Bigotry is a product of fear of what is not understood and only knowledge can over come ignorance and hatefulness. May Allah SWT reward you.
Paul: It feels weird having to comment praising your work in most of your videos while praising the living is not a habit of mine! Perhaps it is because seeing your own progress over long time in handling Islamic knowledge sincerely, fairly and accurately to a high degree makes me feel proud of you (regardless of some issues in which we do differ). May Allah grant you firmness in the belief and practices which please him.

Assalamu alaikum wa ramatullahi wa barakatu. Wonderful video brother.. I am a revert to Islam since March 2018 from Roman Catholicism. The first group I affiliated myself with (not by choice but by circumstance) was a turkish sufi group. It soon became clear that they were not far off from the Catholic church I had left for the sake of al-Ahad, Allah swt. I pray to find association with a good group of Muslims who strictly observe Tawheed. May Allah bring us all guidance by his mercy and compassion
Ibn Taymeyya is such a controversial and polarizing figure in the Muslim world. I've always either heard unlimited praise from his followers and indescribable shunning and disparagement from those who dislike him; usually salafis and progressive islamists respectively. I never formed an opinion myself since I haven't read much about him however, the majority of what I heard was negative. This book should be on my list this year.
Indeed. He is credited with the introduction of anthropomorphism into Islam, whose inspiration he apparently took from the Jewish sources. And thus was charged with heresy by all of the leading scholars of the 4 madhabs unanimously, found guilty in the court and sentenced to prison, where he languished till his death.
@@tamerlane7 salafis argue that not taking names and attributes literally is something that ashaaris made up and that the right thing to do is to take the scriptures literally including clearly metaphorical verses like "God's hand is above them" etc. And this whole fight is really stupid imo, what kind of god would have actual hands, legs and a face.
@@tarekmegahed1423 Exactly. These verses should have been left as they are, with the standard response of all of the scholars being, “God knows best”. There was no need to interpret them in a Judeo-Christian sense.
People should read and learn about prophets companion's (radhiallahu anhuma) aqeedah and tawheed before speak too much. Or hear others perpective that could dangered their believe in Allah ta'ala. Ta'til or denying/rejecting all or many attributes of Allah and tafweed or erasing all attributes/not knowing the meaning at all, both are the source of damage in Islam teaching. They act like Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alaihi wassalam did not completely teach ALL aspect of Islam. Ta'til make muslim do ta'wil, tasybih, and so on. As if Allah himself did not clearly speak what his want. Allah say He has hand. Not hand as human or anything in our mind. He states that clearly. So why do some people have objection to that? This aqeedah is prophet's Sallallahu alaihi wassalam aqeedah. His companion's aqeedah. Al imam ahlusunnah's aqeedah. May Allah high in his Arsy give his hidayah and tawfeeq to all of us.
Imam Shams uddin adh-dhahabi was a contemperary and student of Ibn taymiyyah who wrote the book Seeru alaam An-nubalaa - a book on biographies of many Islamic personalities from the era of Prophet Muhammad (saw) until Imam Dhahabi's time.
Once Ibn Qayyum visited him in the early morning after Fajr salah and Ibn Taymiya was sitting at the same place where he had offered his Fajr Salah and Ibn Qayyum was waited for 2 and Half hour and when he came after doing Zikr of Allah(SWT) he apologized for the late arrival and then said and i quote," This(Zikr of Allah(SWT) after Fajr Salah is my daily breakfast, if i din't get it, the whole day is ruined". He was a great Muslim Scholar, he was not christian.

Akhi.. you should make a video on reading. Tips and tricks, how much at a time, what you do with a book before reading it, times of the day you enjoy reading, what to do with reads you struggle to enjoy, do you read thoroughly or do you skim. Dealing with distractions, types of settings you read in when you read, do you re-read titles you've already read?, are you a note taker, suggestions for beginner readers and some suggestions for avid ones as well, benefits of constant reading, difference between reading articles and books, how much time a day do you typically spend in a book. I enjoy reading but I waver with it from time to time and am going to assert myself to reading more consistently. Would love to get your insights on it and anymore goodies you may have and I think your following would also appreciate it as well as many of those who follow you I'm sure respect books and the art of reading. Allahumma barik
Fascinating! We are forever dealing with this scholar or that, this fascinating authority or other. How can we separate the wheat from the chaff? How can the layman decide? Not everything that shines is gold? How lovely if we had a set of boxes to tick when studying a scholar rather than how big his study circle ⭕️ was or how influential he was or how big a library of books he wrote. I really appreciate this presentation and book review of the colossal Ibn Thayimiah. The glimpse into the mannerisms and character of Ibn Thayyimiah was especially useful. I would also love to read about the Fruits that this great scholar bore by an honest researcher. Because as our beloved Prohet Easa pbuh is reportedly to have said - one can judge the tree from its fruits. Allah knows best. Jazakhallah Khair n thank you for another 💎. May Allah Bless you and your loved ones. 😊

I read the book and I didn't like how jon Hoover talked about certain topics. For an introductory book like this, one would expect a more moderate tone. I wonder if he accurately represented some of his positions. Anyway, I heard really good things about professor El tobugi's book on ibn taymiyya. Maybe review it next? Thank you for the videos. I've benifeted.
@Matt Harvy sufis are digging there own grave right about now, what he describes of Sufism is what we see from Sufism and it's nowhere near orthodox Islam.
Ibn Taymiyyah was an encyclopedia ... I recommend you to read his book ("Averting the Conflict between Reason and [religious] Tradition" ) Eleven volumes.
I would be pleased if you added more commentaries on Islamic religious books. You may start with Ghazali's work "Ihya Ulumuddin" - Revival of religious sciences. Good luck!!!

The Messenger of Allah said: “Marriage is part of my sunnah, and whoever does not follow my sunnah has nothing to do with me. Get married, for I will boast of your great numbers before the nations. Whoever has the means, let him get married, and whoever does not, then he should fast for it will diminish his desire.”
In Recent years an Indian Islamic scholar also died and he also didn't marry. FYI it takes 30 years to be an Islamic scholar and even more years to be an experienced scholar. Prophet pbuh also said Anyone who can marry should marry ,those that can't, let them fast, for fasting reduces sexual desires.
Thanks for the video Paul. And yes , Ibn Taymiaa was a great schollar and a follower of the salaf way means the pure islam. i'm pretty sure that the world will be amazed if the books of Ibn Tymiyya was translated to english , and of course translated correctly ! this man is a genious and extraordinary , he spent all his life for this religion refuting the inovators and clarifying the roots of islam to muslims. he refute even the christians with a holistic book called : *A Muslim Theologian's Response to Christianity* it will be nice that you talk about this book in next videos... He wrote also another unique pearl : *The rejection of the conflict between reason and revelation* where he refuted the philosopher.
Ibn Taymiah is very great mind , on a very large field of knowledge The book is good from a very specialist The video is nice and informative I wish you could make more videos from sections of the book
Ibn Taymia is the greatest scholar from his time to now. He struggled from his boyhood to death.I never find any scholar like him to be struggle in every steps of Islam, like education, memorize quran, studies language to understand quran, studies fique, etc.He is a greatest theologian and philosopher. He tried by his tongue, writings, fighting in jihad, for the Islam. I like his performance. Allah bless him and give him jannatul ferdous. Ammen.
could you make a book review playlist. I am currently reading the translation of the Quran, I would like to move to the Hadith's then, but after that I don't know what direction I should go. Seeing your content makes me trust your reviews.
Ibn Taymiyyah believed that Hawadith and the world had No Beginning, and Exists Eternally with Allah. Quran Says that there was nothing except Allah sw and he brought the universe to the existence from nothing: “Creator of the heavens and the earth from nothingness, He has only to say when He wills a thing, “Be,” and it is.” (2:117) The Hanafi ‘Allamah (very knowledgeable Islamic scholar) al-Bayyadi mentioned in his book "Isharat-ul-Maram", page 197, after mentioning the proofs about the beginning of the world: Hence, what Ibn Taymiyyah thought of al-’Arsh being eternal, as reported in "Sharh-ul-’Adudiyyah", is invalidated.
One of the main issues is that his works cover such a huge swath of issues and topics that it's hard to disagree with him completely. One of the problems is that people tend to embrace everything he says or deny it all in full. This is not a useful way of looking at it. People should be able to say, I deny his criticism of Asha'arism but I agree with him on the topic of so and so. Since around the 14th century or so there has not been any meaningful development in the understanding of Islam. Modern Islamic scholarship seems to be just rehashing the works of these earlier scholars.
“Development in the understanding of islam” was the problem to begin with. We should seek to recover the original understanding of the salaf, not “develop” it. If you want “development” then focus on maths, science, engineering or another subject.
@@craigthebrute2409 You are assuming that this is a current problem, that modern Muslims don't follow the Salaf. If you follow one of the four madhabs and you are one of Ash'ari, Athari or Maturidi, you are on the path of the Salaf. There are many issues that the Salaf didn't tackle or didn't have an opinion on since they came up way after they have passed away. By development, I was referring to the fact that the issues that are being debated within Islamic scholarship are still the same issues from centuries ago. Islamic scholarship is not tackling modern issues. Following the Salaf is the key to understanding but they don't have the answer to everything.
@@samals6454 ashari & maturidi have nothing to do with the salaf. They are nothing but Greek answers to Greek problems. I'm sick of the cancer that is Hellenist thought infecting every religion. They already ruined the religion of jesus with that bullshit, now they want the same with islam.
@@craigthebrute2409 This militarism in opinion is not good for the umma. If you deem the Athari creed to be the correct one then Ashari/Maturidi are %99 in agreence with the Atharis. All the debate is in the %1 so yes Asharis and Maturidis have everything to do with the Salaf. Fact is, these questions were being asked and there had to be answers to them. These matters are not so obvious and both sides make great arguments, these are matters of Ijtihad. Asharis/Maturidis/Atharis are all valid schools of ahl al sunnah. Greek philosophy is just tools of understanding, there is nothing wrong with taking from it what doesn't contradict the Quran and Sunnah and reject what does.
You should read his biography, a very interesting figure with intellectual abilities way beyond imagination. His character and thoughts were distorted by some of his enemies (haters) of his time and after his time, so I recommend you to read from the sources themselves. I don't know how much of his work is translated, so many of his books are yet to be translated to English. Wonderful subject brother Paul, keep it going, your channel is unique. God bless you.
An interesting insight on Ibn Taymiyya being a celibate. As a celibate myself I have found exemplary power through the divine seed. Using it for my spiritual path, such a force that makes intellectual matter flow through ones mind to his reality. Once lust and desire is overcome what path can delude oneself to the realisation of Allah. When materials evaporate realms are seen and truth is shown to ones soul. Take care Paul peace be upon you.
@@Marcusdwayne639 He was too busy with learning/teaching/the battlefield/being imprisoned to be able to get married and give it its right due. 3 men celibacy hadith, google this and read the hadith about this
The author "Jon Hoover" claimed that Ibn Taymiyya may have participated in Sufi rituals but the only record he quoted shows that Ibn Taymiyya refused to participate and even criticized their way.
A little thing about him that little know about shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah RA is that he was a warrior he fought in many great battles he also gave motivational speeches in battle to the soldiers he and loved Jihad Fisabillillah
He also stated that "God has limbs; He comes to the Earth every night and goes back to heaven in the morning!" He was the Paul of Tarsus in Islamic history.
Very interesting review of Ibn Taymiyya from non Arab academician. I would really love to get hold of the book that orderly reveals the life of this great scholar. His directly translated writings are not very easy to read as he could tackle a topic and deviate into other multiple issues which make it heard to follow. However such people( mujaddid) will now and then appear to Renew or Affirm the Islamic principles as these are always with time tarnished with innovations from other ideologies. No wonder the author mentioned about polarisation but this is by default an occurrence due to some people who love innovations and refusing to go by the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Calling Ash'aris catholic and Ibn Taymiyah a protestant was not a success analogy as you mentioned yourself. Because, even though Ibn Taymiyah was a reformist of his time and his teachings are widely considered as opposing to Ash'ari/Naqshbandi theology, their basic understanding of Islam and rituals were pretty much same. Also, when people discuss Ibn Taymiyah's works they tend to emphasise his controversial thoughts exclusively, blurring the main idea that he was serving the prosper of Islam in the same way as other great Imams.
Professor John Hoover relied on the letter (بيان زغل العلم والطلب)Which describes Ibn Taymiyyah but the truth is that it is not attributed to al-Dhahabi Al-Dhahabi Imam is one of the disciples of Imam Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah who benefited from his knowledge, and was influenced by his morals and piety, and he translated for him a translation that indicated the status of the Sheikh of Islam with him and his knowledge of his destiny, and he said in it: He is too big to warn about his biography like me, if I Swear between the corner and the maqam I would have sworn that I had not seen like him, and that he had not seen like himself. He also said in his knowledge of the Sunnah: It is believed that every hadith that Ibn Taymiyyah does not know is said to be a hadith. As for the message of Zaghal al-Alam attributed to al-Dhahabi in which it attacks Ibn Taymiyyah, it is true that its attribution to al-Dhahabi is not correct

Interesting to hear Hoover’s critical analysis (orientalist) turning out to be in defence of Ibn Taymiyah rh works - especially agreeing on Ibn Taymiyah rh classical stance on creed...... Just goes to show it is not ones mental capacity alone that leads to acceptance but also requires his heart to be in line too - Ibn Taymiyah rh gives thorough explanation on the importance of this subject matter in his works.
