There are a lot of problems with high speed rail travel in the US. A lot of tracks aren't designed for high speed trains, tracks are shared with cargo trains a lot and cities are more wide spread than in Europe - add to that the absurdley low cost of fossile fuels in the US and you get what we have today. Although if the US really tried, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston would be ideal terrain for a high speed railway for example. Large cities not that far apart mostly in one straight line.
The US's population is also relatively sparsely populated, too. High Speed will work in places like California, the East Coast and Florida because they have large populations that are far away but not too far away. I would love to be able to ride a High speed train in a straight line coast to coast, but there's too small a population in-between to do that.
Adwaenyth the current Acela Express largely covers that on the NEC but you’re right with respect to sharing the ROW with extremely slow freight as well as commuter rail carriers (I.e.: MBTA, MTA, NJT, SEPTA and MARC).
You notice what's missing here? High speed rail in Europe doesn't have any grade crossings. Eliminating grade crossings in the US would be the single biggest expense.
You might choose flying. Here in Germany in many cases flying can be cheaper than the train. Two years ago Munich Berlin with the ice 110 eur, flight with lufthansa 70
I accidentally got an I.C.E. train to Munich (after my first 2 days in Germany riding slow commuter trains). The ride is quiet and smooth as silk. As a stupid tourist I learned that it's better economics to buy the higher priced I.C.E. ticket and save lots of travel time. When I boarded the train I had no idea that a train could even travel at these speeds. I looked out the window once we started moving and was like "what the fuck??"
I grew up in NN and learned all the history of the railroad, which was called the C&O, Chesapeake and Ohio. The railroad built the city because it brought coal down from the mountains to the sea for shipping anywhere. The Amtrak service to NN is pretty low-grade and the station is shabby and has no sense of place, and in fact is no place. Richmond has a beautiful old train station--which is not in use, another shabby no-where "station." Further up the line, King Street Alexandria and Union Station DC are nice. Just above Richmond is Ashland, which is famous for the houses facing the line which goes right through the old town.
Given that most American rail infrastructure that Amtrak uses is over 100 years old (often _well_ over) while German high-speed lines were all built within the last 50 years, that's an apt comparison. Unfortunately, many of my fellow Americans are quite resistant to the idea of providing the government funding/subsidies necessary to have a high-quality, high-speed passenger rail system. I'm hoping that changes radically as our younger, non-car-obsessed generations come of age and assert their political power.
better take a look here: (esp. after 02:00:00.. 320 km/h ) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7nOR_BFym-w.html look at speed and listen to the sound...
This is just great! I live in Nürnberg and I did this trip like 100 times or so. But I never had the cockpit view! For the larger part, the tracks are running alongside the autobahn. It is just stunning how slow the cars appear. The first half is hilly, and here the amount and the length of the tunnels is stunning, too. One last observation, if I may: The appearance of the sky changes tremendously quickly as well.
I travelled the direction always when going from Bayreuth to Munich. Unfortunately, barely in the ICE but in the IC (or was it RE?). but since my father was train driver I was " allowed" to travel in the ICE cockpit from Munich to Dortmund once 😂
this is beautiful. it brings back a lot of memories of when I was stationed in Garlstedt , GR in 1986. Germany has some of the most beautiful countryside I've ever seen!
If we get these trains on Lahore to Karachi track which probabaly takes 2 nights and 1 day.... I will surely have breakfast in Lahore, Lunch in Karachi and Dinner back in Lahore. Damn! we need these!
This is the best express ride I have ever seen on RU-vid. It is better than my first ride on the Amtrak Acela express train in the United States. Also, the concrete roadbed outside the tunnels, as well as inside the tunnels are neat. Please let me know what the actual speed of that train was, especially in miles. I need to take a long ride like this one.
Rail infrasctructure in western Europe is generally pretty good. And yes, there are delays. But guess who causes most of them? Passengers annoying train staff, fare dodgers, trespassers, objects thrown on the raiway, animals on the railway..... And yes, there are technical faults sometimes. I guess it's far more reliable commuting to work on the train than in a car timewise, as you'r likely get stuck in the daily rush hour traffic jams.. And yes, trains can be overcrowded during the rush hour, but gorvernements are investing in shorter intervals and longer trains. (which needs longer platforms).
Such a soothing sound and best view.. And btw, after watching this I realized why there are no high speed trains in India - density and infrastructure. For the same distance on Indian rails you will find - some 53 stations, 156 manual crossings, 335 vehicles crossing tracks, some 35 other trains waiting for clearance, 56 stone throwing (playing) kids, 550 people, 305 dogs, 450 sheep and some 250 cows and buffaloes, 25 villages where the passengers may pull emergency brake chains to get down near their houses, and if you are lucky you may even spot a few elephants on tracks. Thanks now I feel proud of Indian Railways.
I know you are just exaggerating, but is it really that hard? I mean who in his right mind would cross a railtrack? Or pull emergency brake? That is highly illegal and you will have to pay a fine or even face court proceedings.
@@chickenpommes19 And then they wonder why they wont develope... I just watched it. Thats like from another planet. I commute every day by train and never saw someone using this brakes
It's interesting to visit the Audi Museum there. They offer guided tours if wanted. I've been there with my peruvian wife and I strolled around downtown during the day and we had a tour in Spanish.
@@Molekulasti So make another Hollywood movie about your dreams and bombard me ''legally''.... But don't forget one thing, the truth is unlimited in time.
Great video. I have done this journey a couple of times as a tourist. A journey linking two of may favorite German cities. If you only visit Germany one in your lifetime make sure it is Munich!
I love the ICE trains, much appreciation from England, though I’ve never had the pleasure of riding the older versions of these wonderful trains, the ICE 3s and Valero D are amazing trains
Trains done properly. I note this was posted back in 2016. Here we are in 2020 and Britain is still squabbling about HS2, which I confidently predict will cost at least 4 times what they say it will now and which will simply draw more people to work in London - the opposite of what they claim it will do. :-)
Thanks to the invention called "LZB" - A kind of assistance system and security system. Once you go over the "start marker" you have all Infos like predestined speed and actual speed on your primary display and even the break distance, which starts normally at 4000m and counts down to 0. This system makes high speed drives possible. With LZB activated, you don't look at signals. Standart PZB system monitors up to 160kp/h. This is the maximum speed where the human eye can see signals and signs clearly. Over that you need the LZB system.
Thank you for this video, is at 27:17 the exact point of the transition from LZB system to the "standard" one? Also, I can barely see another sign next to the track, may I assume it says "LZB" aka the point where this system starts again? Thank you in advance for reply!
Actually, I think it is a bit earlier. At the end of the last tunnel. The transisition is announced in advance by indicators in the cab. The trackside signs are merely for orientation purposes.
One thing that always surprised me about German high speed railways is that they have no fencing along the track. In the UK almost all track is fenced, I have noticed that in France it tends to only be TGV track that is fenced, but in Germany there is nothing to prevent you walking straight onto the track. Perhaps it is a cultural thing, German's might view it as "why would anyone do that" but if anyone knows the reason I would be interested.
I made that journey many times from Berlin to Munich when I lived there. The ICE was always a lovely way to travel. Thanks for bringing back fond memories 😊
We transport more people on trains everyday than the whole of Europe did you support Pres identity Obama's infrastructure plan it included upgrading Amtrak and bridges that the republican Congress and Senate refused to support maybe see what trump is going to do while he cuts taxes for the rich with no plans to help infrastructure
14 cars long gliding I had the pleasure of riding BR 401 from Frankfurt- Hamburg Sunday morning May 8 th 2010 and yes I was thrilled and took a great nap 😁 I hope to ride her again to Berlin .
