Feb. 6, 2014 an ice dam broke along US 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon at mile marker 78 just east of Drake. Water rushed very quickly eastward through the canyon, drawing quite a bit of attention due to the noise it made. The highway has been untouched by the water.

I loved living in Steamboat, Colorado. This video brought back many fond memories of just getting in the truck with a bunch of friends and watching in awe the beauty and strength of nature with no one else around. It is magical watching nature take its course like this. Thanks for sharing, even though it was 2 years ago.

Was the weather particularly cold on this day? It looks like a freeze-up icejam that released water downstream past your vantage point. We often get those in Vermont, especially in December.

I remember the stories a friend and co-worker told of the Big Thompson flood that killed so may people. We drove threw it 6 years later and could still see the high water marks 15 - 35 feet up on the canyon walls

I'm reminded of a big flood which hit the major city in my state some years ago. There was an ice dam which burst upstream on a major tributary which ran through the center of town during a thaw following a series of heavy snows, coupled with rain from a passing Nor'Easter. It ended up flooding some of the low-lying neighborhoods downhill from the downtown business district and upland residential neighborhoods.

Docktor Jim so if anyone is saying this isn’t dangerous. Given I’ve lived somewhere below sea level where the river doesn’t break its banks but the tidal rise pumps out of the drain and someone lost their life in that, think about what you’re saying.
