It's early June and we've never faced summer mining conditions like this before in Northwestern Alaska. There are icebergs everywhere, the water temperature is just a degree above freezing, and we're still getting snow flurries.
But the wind and the waves are calm, and the Bering Sea is calling our name. The crew is going to have to figure out how to deal with these historically cold conditions to get on the gold, or none of us are going to get paid.

Good question! It's actually warmer with a wetsuit and hot water pumping in continuously. Dry suit at those temperatures you'll be cold within the hour. Thank you!

Good question! Didn't realize people would be confused about this until I started seeing comments about it this episode, but it makes sense. The BSG format is a little twisty with time. They'll show one dive and then a cleanup that's actually weeks of work. We only clean up maybe 6-9 times a season - sometimes not for weeks if we have to keep diving. So there will be probably 10 episodes devoted to cleanups - you'll see all of them. But we have to get on the gold for a while first! They're coming

Love the series so far. One question - How many weeks until you show us a gold weigh? How often do you do a clean out? OK, sorry, that's two questions.

Good question! Didn't realize this would be so confusing for people. But we only weigh out 6-10 times a season - so maybe 1/4 of the episodes will have a gold weigh. Sometimes it's weeks between clean-ups if the weather's good and we're diving everyday. BSG is kind of confusing they show gold weighs every episode and make it seem like it's after "one dive" - it's really hours and hours on a box to get to 20-50 ozt

Congrats on the future little one. Was wondering since you had regulators freezing up on your air system is there a way to enclose it more and make it draw pre-heated air. Kinda like how you can switch a chainsaw to draw air from around the engine instead of the outside air. Obviously you have to draw good air for diver but just wondered if you could enclose it mostly and it pull air threw a heat exchanger. Your hot water could feed exchanger and water could be looped back for reheating. Just a thought hope it helps you

Is the reg freezing externally because of moisture in the air, or is it freezing internally because of water in the compressed air? Maybe try adding a water trap before the reg?

We have a filtration system that dries the air and releases water. Probably moisture from the diver breath

Coming soon! BSG is kind of twisty with the timeframes. They'll show a dive and then a big cleanup, but that's often the result of weeks of work. We only clean up 7-9 times a season. When the weather's good we have to keep sucking up gold. We'll have an episode for every cleanup though!

Does a comm system even exist that works? I've watched BSG since its beginning and every season, every crew has a comm system that breaks down. Seems like most crews use the Aquacom MK-IV. Is that the most affordable model that provides some level of (sometimes) working comms? Do you have to get into mil-spec gear in order to get something that functions reliably? It seems like this is a crucial issue year after year, but never gets any better.

Probably some extra padding for him so his knees are protected from rocks, and to make kneeling more comfortable.

I was really being a bit smart assed in that you're doing pretty well with the video stuff with some tweeking and He would be the cap to it all. His voice is synonymous with these type shows in alaska of both Fishing and Gold. Might be a bit spendy but you never know.@@TheEmilyRiedel

Yup! It's a competitive lease - up to 4 dredges on at a time. The new compressor is awesome - been totally reliable (so far) and is a major stress reducer. And I'm sure you could get crystal clear communications you just have to pay out the wazoo for it!
