Thanks for this update, Shawn. I guess the bottom line is "if you live on a spreading plate boundary, this is what you can expect!" What's fascinating for me, as a retired geophysicist, is witnessing the formation of new crust happening, effectively in real time. So 'plate tectonics' is real, and not just a theory, which it was when I first got into the business - around 1970. Back then, it was all explained by 'subsidence' and 'uplift', with little if any thought given to what might be causing them. Amazing how far geological thinking has progressed, even in my lifetime!

I think that most every field has had a number of huge discoveries which redefine the science "as we thought that we understood it." It’s interesting looking at the inflation graph and comparing it to a stress/strain graph comparing brittle to plastic materials. Those initial inflation events looked more like brittle behavior, while this latest inflation looks more plastic. This would seem to coincide with the ground heating up and becoming more elastic and possibly taking longer to inflate before erupting.
@avist.6465
@avist.6465 8 дней назад
So... if the ground is more elastic, allowing more magma to accumulate before erupting, does that mean that the next eruption/intrusion will be bigger? Or does the elasticity just mean that the storage capacity is increased, so that more magma will still be there in the chamber, after the eruption is finished?
@avist.6465
@avist.6465 8 дней назад
I think it must be a question of whether the "more elastic" earth will return to its previous shape, given the changes, or if has been permanently deformed to hold more magma. But I'm sort of over my head, here.

It is interesting how a particular objective observation, such as uplift, can result in two separate conclusions. They are of the opinion that more pressure is required to break through, whereas my take is that the rock is warmer, more elastic, and thus requires more volume to reach the critical pressure threshold.
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 11 дней назад
Those are effectively equivalent as pressure is defined as force per unit area, specifically in this case referring to the surface area of the stored magma body. Thus because volume and surface area are related you can convert between the two via integration/differentiation using calculus.

That the eruption slowly slowed and stopped while land rise continues suggests that the eruption is somehow self terminating. Possibly expansion of heated rocks around the conduit to the surface? Perhaps the next eruption will have to find its way through cold or recently cooled rock-just speculating😅
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 11 дней назад
yeah the inflation may have contributed to its self termination especially if the overall slowdown in flow rate was due to magma crystalizing along the cooler edge of the dikes potentially clotting things where the melt is piling up perhaps?

The magma chamber underneath Scart Sengi could continue to refill indefinitely as it may have been the source for the last series of eruptions almost 800 years ago in the Sundhnur region as it is lately. You mention extra elasticity in the sill after previous eruptions before breaking rocks is causing the extra threshold with every new event. Isn't it also, because of that breaking of rocks during the previous intrusions/eruptions that with these broken rocks the sill itself has been (a bit) larger than at previous times? So the sill can hold extra magma (because of the extra room and elasticity) before it reaches the point of build pressure and next event happens?

@beeble2003

@herbieschwartz9246 11 дней назад
Making that calculation from differential topography was the simple method that I didn't bother to reference. There are a lot of variables and assumptions to make that approximation to be sure. I would say it's time to abandon the town the power plant the Blue lagoon everything and stop wasting their taxpayers money because these are options are going to continue for years to come they're not going to stop

It doesn't work like that.

The berms protect the power plant and Blue Lagoon. And they also protect the town of Grindavik as workers are continuing to use it as a fishing port. There are very few fishing ports in southern Iceland. So your assumption that the berms are a waste of money is false.

It will erupt again and soon, and it will be big, I think you’re going to see the earthquake clusters move up and down the rift.

I have been wondering for some time if the inflation of the flow to the south has changed the topography enough to constitute a barrier to any flow from a fissure to the north?

Probably not so much because lava from new eruptions always come out on top of the old lava which is spread out. But it does change the direction of lava flow over time. Since the terrain slopes to the south that is where lava flows will continue unless the eruption vent is far enough north then it goes west primarily.

The Connells! I saw those guys live first in 1985. One of the United States is most unappreciated bands. And a bunch of great guys. What's your connection?

One of my top five bands. Listened to them starting in high school. We went to see them in Raleigh, NC last year. Great band.

..Thanks for content and diverse information. Been following your channel in AK, USA as time permits.. With late spring; and after-effects of longer than usual winter season.. From the localized situation, my other RU-vid channels are great diversions too. Thank you again! ~ small town AK-USA🇺🇸❄🍄🌤
