I am watching reports from Geldingadalir eruption since the very beginning on 19.03.2021. In my mind, I have recorded time-lapse pictures of small fiery cracks spewing lava on the ground level, till it has reached the current stage of a giant surrounded with once deep valleys now almost entirely filled up with lava. Watching today's footage I am sure that I will be doing it for the next many years to come when Geldingadalir volcano will tower and finally cover by lava all surrounding hills on its way to the ocean. My only hope is that it will grove southeast sparing nearby cities. Green Iceland, many thanks for your excellent job and sharing these magnificent views with us :-)

What you are doing is important for the understanding of this volcano ... for future reference. I don't understand why you don't have hundreds of thousands of people watching right now ... but they will come. Please don't change the name of your site. I think you'd rather be filming something else, so let me say, thank you for your sacrifice. The hike is hard and long but you are appreciated more than you know. You really are getting some great videos that future scientist will be happy to have access to.

Interesting seeing that area around the back of the cone that's smoking. Previously when this vent started erupting, it was 2 vents dubbed Rag and Nar. Originally Rag was the dominant and more active vent but as time passed, Nar became the more dominant vent, burried Rag under a small mountain of lava and tephra and eventually grew into the massive cone you see today. I do however believe that the smoke coming from the back of Nar is actually from what remains of Rag, reminding us that it's still there.

Beautiful and informative. A couple of weeks ago there was a hill there with equipment - now gone. Following the growth of new land is fascinating and your videos are so good. Check out today’s New Yorker magazine - you get to read a couple of articles free - Heidi Julavits has a great article, Chasing The Lava Flow, on her several visits to the volcano a couple of months ago. She is very descriptive of her treks and the weather. Gives me a greater appreciation of what the videographers go through. Thank you.

Öræfajökull is the largest active volcano and the highest peak in Iceland at 2,110 metres. This little baby could stop growing tomorrow ..... or not. When it does stop, statistically speaking it is likely to be at something less, perhaps far less than 2,110 meters tall. Clearly, when it stops and how WIDE it gets is the relevant question here. I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer here but these are the parameters that are apparent on the face of things, and that is the basis of any rational assessment of potential outcomes.
@corinneyoung4932

It won’t be long before the lava comes out this other side there’s already a vent we’re steam is coming out of.. it makes you wonder how far this lava is coming up from.
@Tom-Lahaye
@Tom-Lahaye 2 года назад
I think the steam on the north slope is caused by rainwater seeping in the upper part of the cone. That part is formed by blobs of lave and is porous, where the grey stone under it is formed by lave overflowing the rim. That part isn't porous so rainwater gets trapped on that layer and is heated from the inside forming the vapour.
@theredrover3217

Marvellous! Does something prevent a closer View of the exterior cone? A more detailed observation of the walls and rim? With a less photogenic objective and more Nuts and bolts construction situation is.

I wonder what it would look like in a few years if it kept up? What if the magma chamber collapses in on itself? What if this volcano kept erupting for 100 years?
@yngviorsigurjonsson3878
@yngviorsigurjonsson3878 2 года назад
@Steven Krum, the hills around were created under the glacier of the ice age, so the formation was a completely different although the material probably had the same origin. There would have been no lava flow as most of the lava would turn into ash on impact with the water.
