Hæ hó jibbí jei, það er kominn 17. júní! 🇮🇸🥳 // Happy 80th Independence Day in Iceland! 🇮🇸🥳
If you didn’t know, Iceland, as we know it today, is only celebrating its 80th birthday as an independent Republic this year on June 17. So 80 years ago on June 17, 1944, in a big ceremony in Þingvellir National Park at Lögberg Rock, Iceland was finally declared independent after 682 years of foreign rule. First, it was ruled by Norway in 1262, and in 1380, Norway and Denmark were united under one Danish king, and Iceland transitioned to Danish rule. In 1944, the role of the Danish King was then simply forwarded to the “new” position of the Icelandic President, Sveinn Björnsson.
So, we headed into one of Iceland’s biggest nursing homes in Reykjavík and asked some witnesses of that time to tell us more about how 17. June 1944 was for them.
