I was staying in Iceland for 11 months working on a dairy farm close to Akureyri. Thanks to Nínukot I became part of a lovely Icelandic family, got to explore the Icelandic culture and nature. Although I had no farming experience when I came to Iceland, Svanborg found a nice farm for me where they were willing to teach me everything. Besides work I also had enough time to travel the country and make new friends. It was the best time of my life!

@Halli50

I particularly like your sensible, clear-eyed opinions about the pros and cons of doing this Iceland bit. No sugar-coating, just plain, hard facts, particularly the 'who should not go to Iceland' bit. Some people do not thrive unless the climate is at least balmy or warm, others suffer whenever temperatures go above 25°C. There was an US Midwest University professor about to retire that happened to travel to Iceland - and for him it was a no-brainer. In his words: Temperatures are rarely above 20°C in summer or below -5°C in winter, and uncomfortably high humidity is very rare (he came from an area where +40°C in summer and -25°C in winter WITH HIGH HUMIDITY was the rule). The Icelandic climate can be temporarily excessive, never boring but never oppressive! Everybody speaks English and Europe is only 3 hours away, the US only 5 hours away. With his generous pension and his already-made contacts into Icelandic academia his decisions was easy... I see from your footage that you spent some time in Þingeyri (I was born, raised and currently live in nearby Ísafjörður). I hope you enjoyed your stay.

I know there are a lot of great natural sights to see, and everyone I know who has gone there has loved it so much that they want to return again. The lack of mosquitos is NOT due to the cold in winter but rather due to the lack of oppressive heat in summer. Make no mistake, we have our share of irritating/biting/stinging insects, but they are only Gnats that do not carry any disesases. The best news: They are limited to certain places and limited times of year - most of the time they are no bother and easy to avoid.

After the Dubai visa requirements and now $7500 a month for Iceland, the trend definitely seems to be these countries are only interested in the very top end of the market. I earn less than half that (assuming that's a pre-tax number) and while I could definitely get work that makes me more money, I don't feel like I'm grossly underpaid at all. I do know about Iceland's higher cost of living, but with co-living space available it can't possibly take $7500 a month to live there, even if food was 4x the cost. It's not even like Dubai where there's something around every corner to splurge and spend a lot of money on. I don't know. Maybe I do need to re-evaluate my earnings, but as I've commented on other videos, I've worked from Seoul Korea, Lisbon Portugal, Copenhagen Denmark, which is a notoriously expensive city, and a few other places, all on a salary less than half the requirements for this visa and still had money left over for savings every month.
@TravelingwithKristin
@TravelingwithKristin 3 года назад
I think that a lot of countries are applying the same perspective that they would with a long-term work permit and that is somewhat limiting. But the good news is that you don't need a visa to go to most countries to work from your laptop so that's why I did a podcast about whether or not you need a digital nomad visa at all and which ones are the most valuable. Interested if you agree! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/digital-nomad-visas-do-you-really-need-one/id1463468736?i=1000495427610
