I wanted the full Iceland experience when we went so I tried to get as much uniquely Icelandic products as possible. I can see, however, the lure if you had moved there.
If I were in Iceland and going to that store, I would have to get the Honey Nut Cheerios and if I could find it, Special K Cinnamon Pecan. My two favs that I eat in the US.
I love going to local stores when traveling out of country. It is fun to see the different items and packaging of international brands from country to country
Hey Boo, thanks for revealing the "Honeycomb", or shall I say Cinnamon Toast Crunch "hideout" for us here in the 'States because I sure would be going through withdrawals without it too! Now, on to finding the collard greens section on aisle 3! 😄
I live in the UK, and there are often "American" aisles or sections in the shops here. They always have only the sugariest, fakest, most stereotypical American foods (think Oreos, Pop Tarts, Kraft Mac n' Cheese, etc). As an American, I can honestly say, I almost never ate those brands growing up, and I'd much rather have brands like Annie's macaroni and cheese as opposed to Kraft, and I can't find simple ingredients (like molasses or canned pumpkin) anywhere! I wish they'd just sell things like that, instead of just sweets and fake cheese, honestly!
Ugh! The worst high-sugar ultra processed American crap “food” for the most part. Delicious, but as you reach middle age, if not sooner, you hopefully figure out it’s not really worth it in the long run. That said, Golden Grahams are one of my historic faves! Also Grape Nuts (with raisins added)and GN Flakes (with blueberries)….
I don't buy Cinnamon Toast Crunch because I have zero self-control and I know I will just inhale the whole box immediately, but when I was in college I would often eat a bowl of it from the dining hall for dessert after dinner. It's not just the cinnamon-sugar coating, but the dough of the squares tastes a bit fried in a way that most cereal does not. I checked, and the fourth ingredient after wheat, sugar and rice flour is oil. So it really is like a churro in cereal form. And what better to go with a churro than milk?
That was fun. It was great to see the San-J bottled sauce products. I've used them since the 1980s. I wonder if they have them down in DK. There are a lot of products that I miss when I'm there. As for boxed cereal, I'm not really into it as I cook steel cut oatmeal. But, in the 70s/80s/90s, I occasionally ate either Grapenuts or Raisin Brand with a banana and either unsweetened soy milk or RW Knudsen organic apple juice when in a hurry. And as a small child, in the very late 50s and 60s, I liked plain Rice Krispies and also plain Cheerios, both with a banana and either apple juice, unsweetened soy milk, or regular milk unless the dairy allergy flared back up. In the early 1980s, a close friend from the U.K., but who lived in my same building in Kbh, came to visit me. It was her first trip to the U.S. I asked her what she wanted to see first and she responded that she wanted to go to an American supermarket as she had heard of the huge selection of boxed cereal. LOL! So, off we drove to the supermarket and she was like a kid in a toy store. She got her camera out and took pictures. She still remembers it. Greetings from Los Angeles
Omg!!! Too funny!! I avoid those isles here in the USA like a plague!!! I stopped buying those boxed cereals like 10 years ago. I used to love Honey Smacks, The vanilla cookie Jarvis and frosted flakes with cheese in it 😂 And btw, is there a market for that in Iceland?! The owners of that must pay a fortune to get these items over there 😮
The closest one I've found is 6 hours away in Warsaw. Still shipping through Dompak. I see my Frank's RedHot! Favorite cereal: Cap'n Crunch Crunch Berries and Peanut Butter
Just want to let you know Jewels (?) that most sweetened canned drinks are almost completely sugar with flavor added. If you check the label of a soda and look at the amount of carbs and compare it to the amount of sugar, you will see that the numbers are the same. This means that you are basically drinking a can of sugar. I like sparkling flavored water or just adding a small squirt of MIOS to it. It gives me the feeling of drinking a soda without the huge amounts of sugar.
Australian cities often have USA food shops, but I’ve never seen one that big or comprehensive. Maybe because we also have plenty of US products in supermarkets as well… I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets headaches in the cleaning aisle 😅
This is fascinating. Is this a single store or a chain? Is there a big enough market for American food? My favorite cereal: Raisin Bran. Favorite guilty pleasure cereal: Lucky Charms. (It's a wonder I've lived as long as I have.)
America-land! It must feel comforting (or frightening!) My jam is Capn' Crunch Peanut Butter. But Dad is obsessed with Cinnamon Toast Crunch. He just stocked up on 7 boxes. With the sale and coupon it was only $2 a box. We were curious about the prices there. Must be high!
While visiting Iceland, I would try some of the different Icelandic foods. However, I would still have to pick up supplies from this store! I love Kelloggs Frosted flakes.
Thanks that was fun, what a huge selection! I'm a big fan of Special K , and I really like the Quaker oats cinnamon and Apple, I buy them here in London uk most supermarkets have them, I'm surprised to see so many cereals in there that are stocked here too, I didn't know they are American.
A girl after my own heart with that Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I'm impressed with the variety there, including the fact I noticed a number of items geared toward special dietary needs, like gluten free. I'd be interested to know the markup after you factor in the currency conversion for some of those items. What a nice store when you need a little nostalgia. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! They have some vegan options. I don’t know how long it has been at this location but it used to be in a much bigger location when I first moved.
Please 🙏 i will really appreciate if you could help me with orientation on what or how i can do in other to forward my education in there in Iceland 🙏🙏
Hi. I think it’s best for you to reach out to the main university here. Háskóli Íslands is the one I am referring to. Also, this website might be helpful - study.iceland.is I don’t know much more than that.
Please I’m a Cameroonian and I’ve been studying in Russia for 3 years and will be graduating next year. I will really love to forward my education in Iceland 🇮🇸
What a Nightmare! I would just die going to a store with all USA products! One good thing I have enjoyed about living in Europe the past 10yrs is NOT seeing those products! Why live in Europe if you desire USA things? I am sure somewhere here in Sweden they have such a place. I will never know. I guess this just makes me realize how even being born in the USA I simply was never an American!
