Thanks so much to this week's guest stars: Niccolo Seligmann, James Williamson and M!
Notes:
A while back, I did a different version of this song based on an edition of the Carmina Burana that did not actually have any reason for assigning this text to that particular melody. (For those of you who did not hear my other version, it is here: • Ich was ein chint so w... ) The one I made before (using the edition) was a contrafactum using a sacred carole melody the editor chose from the Florence manuscript (F) to go with this text from the Carmina Burana manuscript (CB). The melody matched the text for the scansion and rhyme but there was no other reason to use that particular melody, as nothing in the original manuscript suggested it.
So since there is no notated melody for this song in the manuscript (no neumes), there is nothing stopping us from creating our own melody to tell this story! I consulted a few experts and we made some decisions. Since it was a dance song (indicated by the repeating refrain typical of a carole), we picked a quick, consistent tempo. The call-and-response form keeps everyone involved in the story. I came up with this melody, which I think is melodically appropriate for the time period and catchy enough to work as a dance song-anyone could join in singing along after hearing it just once. The introduction and interludes are improvised.
