Yeah I was on the edge of my seat throughout this scene waiting for the horseman to appear. His reveal was awesome and the chase was more funny than anything.
The atmosphere in this entire scene is just incredible. The fact that they managed to create such a tense feeling of dread in a children’s film of all things shows that Disney wanted to make a film not just for children but for children of all ages that wanted to get a bit of a scare. The bleak hollow setting, the creatures saying things like “Turn back, Ichabod”, the incredible music cues, and of course, Ichabod’s growing anxiety just increase the terror. They really don’t make stuff like this any more. I can’t help but watch this short every October to get me in the mood for Halloween.
Agreed! This scene is I think even scarier than the Headless Horseman! With this kind of setting, I can imagine something worse coming out to attack Ichabod. The quiet yet moody silence with the eerie lighting and sounds in the forest is terrifying enough on its own. LOL
@mariodobrev3105 I can't say that I blame him. I've been camping out in the woods a few winters ago, and there was always somebody among us who let their imaginations run wild and freak them out by what they thought they saw, because they couldn't take the pressure.
The atmosphere alone and the sequence of "Turn back Incabod", "Headless Horseman. Headless Horseman..." "Here he comes!!" "BEWARE!!!" still never fails to terrify me to this day.
I used to feel exactly like Ichabod does at this part when I worked at my previous job when I rode my bike home past a golf course at night. It was scary no matter whether there was a moon or not
@@stevensampson5823 Well when Ichabod rides through the forest it is quiet and the wind and his whistling is rather eerie and it slowly gets scarier as it goes on and when the tension is already built up we are already expecting the headless horseman
The buildup before the headless horseman was fantastic. You had that sense of dread, as well the funny things that were happening with Ichabod and that horse.
Mine too, in October I have a routine where I have to start my morning with a Halloween movie (no matter how many times I've seen it) with pumpkin coffee and this one is on the list. When I watch this on Disney plus I fast forward Mr toad to get to sleepy hollow
Easily my favorite animated build up for a scare. The color palette, sound design & imagery (like the cloud hand closing around the moon & the cattails thumping on the hollow log) work so incredibly well together to build such an iconic scene. High tier work at Disney.
@@eugenia6356 Well we'll never know - where they trying to warn him or was it all in his head? Guess it all comes down to what you believe - that's how the story ends, with what people choose to believe
Ever since I was little I was in love with this short film, I always wished for it to be longer. I remember I would miss classes whenever this would be on Disney channel early in the morning. My mom knew I wouldn't go to school so she'd say nothing and leave me to see it😅
So after rewatching this scene I can actually relate when he is hiding under the saddle, I have had a very similar experience during a panic attack, I feel they capture what pure terror and panic looks like perfectly here. This scene surprisingly still holds up and creeps me out and makes me uneasy, especially with the lighting and visuals.
I’ve tried to pin down specifically WHAT makes this scene so freaking tense and scary and I think it’s two things: 1) how Ichabod and his horse are WAY TOO FRICKIN SLOW while being chased by the horseman. They waste so much time tripping over themselves and falling backwards and stumbling around that it almost reminds me of when you’re in a dream trying to run away from something but it’s like trying to run through water 2) the way it takes a long time for the horseman to actually show up. Not only does it make it startling when he finally does show up, it means HE WAS IN THERE THE WHOLE TIME. He probably watched them for a while before jumping out like that
I'm literally 22 fucking years old, and even after years of not watching this scene can literally still picture this scene, frame by frame, and hear the animals warnings to Ichabod ringing in my ears when I'm home alone, still makes me paranoid as all hell. LOL And forget about when I'm walking home late at midnight from work, nearly almost roundhouse kicked a guy coming out of his alley way to throw out his trash cause he popped out of nowhere. LMAO I forever blame this amazing yet terrifying movie for instilling perpetual paranoia in me when I'm alone, even in my adult years. 😂😂😂😂
AishaVonFossen not to mention the crickets at 2:17 cricketing Ichabod and the Toad/Frog croaking Headless Horseman And Uh-Oh a Little afterwards at 2:31, as well as the crow crowing BEWARE! at 3:14 sets up for a great atmosphere, especially how it is plays and terrifies Ichabod both mentally and emotionally.
1:07 is literally the most terrifying image I've ever seen from Disney movie. Imagine walking alone at night only to look up at the sky to see that shit!
I dare you to watch this at night with the lights off. I triple dog dare you. Plus if I was him, I’d have slept outside that place with the horse tied to a tree and waited for morning.
I’ve wondered that too, but his horse looks a little smaller than the Horseman’s. Not to mention ghosts would most likely be more able to ride a horse bareback without falling off
@@shanerose7204 But then again Brom Bones is the best horse-rider for miles around. Then again that's what keeps the story interesting, was it just a prank that scared him off - remember the reports that he was alive living somewhere else - or was he actually spirited away. The people who lived in Sleepy Hollow heard that he'd settled down in another town far away and a few people were suspicious of Brom from his behaviour, but they choose to listen to the old wives and the stories they tell and basically turned Ichabod Crane into another local story.
I don't think so. The horseman was actually trying to behead Ichabod. If he hadn't ducked, he would have lost his head EVERY swing. Brom Bones is more of a bully/prankster than anything.
Ichabod did try to find his way home on Halloween night but then he did hear some scary noises in the woods and then he got chased by the Headless Horseman when he got to the church bridge. It’s one amazing ghost story that took place where I went to and that is SLEEPY HOLLOW!!!!! 🎃🗡🐎😱
Nothing in my whole life has ever scared me like this.... I'm 30. Now and I cry tears of sentiment. Wow!!!! Nothing like things the way they were. I grew up in the wrong time. Still sooo scary. Whenever I'm horseback riding how can I not think about this!!!!!!
In the UK I had this on VHS and it was rated as 'U' (universally suitable for all). I loved this as a kid, watched it a lot - but this should be PG rated at least! The horseman scene and general creepiness of this short could have terrified and traumatised many children. No hating coz I loved this.
It could’ve been more scarier than this like it could have some thunder, some very scary faces on trees and some glowing red eyes in the darkness. That would be more terrifying for poor Ichabod before he gets chased by the Headless Horseman.
Strangely enough, the swirling clouds surrounding a full moon can really happen and can scare anyone easily especially if the night is dead quiet and said person has an over active imagination
I refuse to believe that is a real ghost. Besides, my point is that earlier he was able to outrun a horse on his own two feet, so why not here?@@princenoah21
If this was a full feature movie with 60 minutes or a little more, this would have been the scariest animated movies of all time. Just the build up, atmosphere and the revealing alone, makes the ending so terrifying
This version is ten times better than Tim Burton's sleepy hollow, don't get me wrong that's where I first fell in love with Johnny Depp but I prefer this version because I grew up on this
It couldn't have been brom coz in the song he says he met the horseman a year ago so who's or what's chasing Ichabod I bet it was one of the townsfolk dressed as the horseman
