It's actually a masochist's love story crossed with a complex revenge plot. Kakihara WANTS to encounter Ichi because of the pain he may be able to inflict upon him, perhaps why the crime scenes are so over the top- It only entices Kakihara more, and is probably what helps him get over the boss who dies at the beginning and USED to inflict pain on Kakihara like nobody else could. Meanwhile, the old man is using Kakihara's desperation against him to infiltrate his operation and bring down the criminal element using Ichi as a tool. The very experimental soundtrack is The Boredoms as "Karera Musication". The cop twins mention having a third brother whom they were also able to sense when he died. Since the movie is about how violence affects people's psyches differently, the cartoonish levels of violence sort of fits. Ichi's suit is motorcycle padding, I think.

The thing about "reading this as a kid" is not something you should worry, Ichi is in the "Seinen" genre, wich is basically manga for Adults, because the contents are either too hard/psychological for kids to understand (Ichi, Punpun, Monster and others), or too graphic, so parents usually don't allow it or they're just not interested.

I watched this movie with my friends when I was in high school, 18 years ago. We though that Tarantino was violent (back then, most of what he did was spill blood with style in his movies) until we got into Japanese B-movies. Takeshi Miike is on another level on violence and bizarreness. I am pretty he read a lot of Marquis de Sade, his boldness in his movies are top notch.

Really de Sade??? That’s literally nothing like his style. In any way. You couldn’t actually make any sort of reasonable connection between the two. Also… Miike is Japanese man >,< I’d say most of the inspiration for the violence in his movies comes from other over the top violent Japanese media, there’s plenty of it. @@Rise65487 I think it’s a story about the emptiness of violence. We follow empty shells conflicted by violent, depraved tendencies, that are bound to destroy each other. I think that’s why the fact that this film’s climax is basically the fight not happening is so interesting to me. We are brought back to how broken and inhuman these characters have become instead of seeing them dish it out, superhero style. I appreciate reviews on movies like this so much because I would love to watch this and many others out there if there weren’t so many ‘grape’ scenes. I can handle a lot of gore and most violence in movies like this doesn’t get to me, but for some reason I just can’t sit through those types of scenes. Even if they don’t fully show it I just hate the feeling I get even when I’ve been fortunate enough to have never experienced something like that myself. Some of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen I can never re watch solely for that reason. It’s just too much of a very real and deep rooted fear of mine.
@LessPegasus
@LessPegasus 2 года назад
You're better off not watching movies like these, it's just torture p*rn. Watch movies like- martyrs (because that was reviewed on this channel) it'll keep you stuck to your seat. And there's no grape scenes. I too don't like watching movies with grape scenes and movies where what they do isn't justified.. like in this movie. I think it's just a collection of torture scenes put together. Now when you look at martyrs, you'll understand that every scene was justified. Watch good movies, don't waste your time on cult crap like these I'd say. Also, nocturnal animals is another great movie that doesn't show any 'grape' scenes but let's you know what happened without showing anything, which is exactly what movies should do when it comes such unnecessary scenes. Again nocturnal animals was art and ichi the killer is torture p*rn. Sorry for the rant, saw too many fans of this cult crap.
@Anna-jq4lp

@@LessPegasus Yeah I completely agree. For example, the lovely bones. I know that wasn’t exactly a violent horror movie but in the events that really happened that the movie was based on, the little girl was assaulted. But the director came out and said that he had no interest in filming the ‘grape’ of a young teenage girl. I feel like that’s how it mostly should be. Go ahead and hint at it, it doesn’t even have to be subtle, but showing it happen is too much for me. Especially when it hardly even effects the plot or message of the movie. I know some people don’t mind it but for me being a woman whos known victims and always has that fear in the back of my mind even when I’m simply walking alone outside, I just can’t stand seeing another woman be brutalized for entertainment purposes. I’ve always thought it was strange how people would brag about loving movies that were like you said, senseless violence and torture p*rn. When used correctly violence and gore in horror movies can work wonderfully, just not like that. Thank you for the recommendations!
@LessPegasus
@LessPegasus 2 года назад
@@Anna-jq4lp I didn't know about that. Great that he did that. If some other director did that, they would have placed a little girl looking 18 y/o to play that scene, which is horrible and unnecessary. Three billboards outside ebbing is also great movie that does that. I can understand that. Even though I'm a guy, I find it really uncomfortable watching even near "grape" scenes, so I can imagine how uncomfortable you must be. When it comes to blood and all that, if it's justified, you think "it's okay" but grape scenes never feel like that. The sad thing is there are a lot of people who enjoy watching that crap, as every horror movie over tier 3 of the disturbing movie iceberg is just torture p*rn where women are the victims. I don't know if you watch that crap without batting an eye, there's something wrong with you. My recommendations nocturnal animals and martyrs are very intense movies though, with martyrs being very disturbing and dark. Its actually very hard to watch, so go in thinking "it's all fake and make up". Even though it is hard to watch, it has good cinematography amongst other things. I wouldn't normally suggest martyrs but I talked about it as a movie without "grape" scenes. I sat through it thinking it's make up and fine acting, (because the story was engaging) so.. yep

@@Anna-jq4lp I am not so fortunate and these scenes really really trigger me. I hate it as well when it's a man writing it about a woman, because it feels cheap, like they just want to exploit the female character in a way that perpetuates male violence. I completely understand feeling uncomfortable about it. I'm chill with gore but anything involving SA feels so so so wrong and horrible, it's so much worse

Never expected you would cover this movie...funny thing is, in spite of how incredibly gory and disturbing this movie is, the manga that it's based on is actually even MORE violent than the film adaptation, so much so that readers of the manga say it was actually HIGHLY TONED DOWN compared to the original. And having read it...I completely agree, the level of not just gore, but utter perversion and unnecessary acts of violence and just...generally fucked up stuff is just absolutely astounding for a series with only a little more than 100 chapters. But what really fascinated me was the highly introspective and psychological tone they took with Ichi, I mean, he had a whole character arc where he began to doubt Gigi's manipulation of him and decided to give up on killing, basically realizing that he is indeed mentally disturbed and needs to deal with his messed up past, and yet by the end he just ends up going back on it due to his own degenerate desire to murder along with a little push from Gigi. Unfortunately a lot of the interesting elements of his character were undermined by the absolute cop out ending they pulled at the very last chapter, not gonna spoil it but for a writer with the finesse and realism in how he addresses mental issues (he also wrote Homonculus, which is a similarly dark, yet somewhat more tasteful work focused on the human condition and psychological trauma) the way Ichi's character arc is finished off is superbly underwhelming, though still better than the movie's ending. Also the manga has almost none of the issues with special effects and actually has way better artwork than you'd expect for what is pretty much overdramatic torture p**n

Ahhhh i love that you're talking about Ichi. My friend showed me this one around last Christmas and I adore the vibe of it. An insanely dark parody of superhero films centered around the antagonist, a sato masochistic yakuza boss, and our "hero" is this psycho incel man baby that dresses up like a comic book hero. Plus, anytime this psycho incel baby goes on a rampage, he ends up also killing the people he was meant to save. It's funny, cause anyone Ichi slaughters that is considered a villain, it is usually shown with extremely goofy effects, however, when Ichi kills an innocent, it is shown in total brutally. Love this film.

I read the manga before I saw the movie, and honestly believe the film is better. Both are needlessly violent, sexually exploitative, and painfully cringey at times. But the character design in both is fantastic, and Ichis emotional and sexual journey is interesting to read in the manga. The film has less violence somehow, while the manga explores more sexually deviant ideas and how they relate to phsyological trauma. The story in the film is more easily understood however, and the actor for Kakihara steals the show. The music is also intriguing. Takashi Miike is a great director, who directed the horror comedy Gozu, which I Iove. the author of the manga wrote a near masterpiece called Homunculus, which I recommend. It explores what makes someone human and etc. It got a live action film on Netflix that isnt really worth anybodies time. Anyway, thanks for reading :) Btw, Im sorry, but your pronunciation of a few names really bothered me. Ichi is pronounced Ee-chee, the japanese word for 1. His real name is unknown.
