@KGTropicals they’re still eating good so that’s a good sign the temperature is at the correct spot there goldfishes and I know people are going to say they’re just goldfishes blah blah blah blah but they’re my goldfishes and I have the correct amount of fishes in this 50 gallon tank and I do the correct water changes I do in every two weeks depending on how dirty the water is and I feed the fishes just a teeny tiny bit in the morning and before I go to sleep

I think one very important thing to add to this which was not mentioned is telling the difference between Ich and Epistylis. Especially for any people who are new to keeping fish and don’t know the difference. A lot of people see white spots on a fish and they automatically think it’s Ich. If it’s actually Epistylis and you raise the temperature of the tank, you can make the situation worse. Epistylis also has to be treated differently as it won’t respond to traditional Ich medications. Instead of raising the temperature, you should actually decrease it. Two ways to tell the difference is: 1) Epistylis appears as little particles attached to the fish’s skin and gills. Almost as though they are tiny raised barnacles. They are not always uniform, they can also show up in groupings. Ich tends to be flat in appearance. Similar to as if they are paint specks. They also tend to be more uniform across the whole fish. 2) As mentioned before, Epistylis is sort of like a barnacle. It attaches itself to the fish so it can also be on the eyes. Ich doesn’t affect the eyes at all. Epistylis likes to feed off bacteria in the water column. So it attaches itself to the fish to be able to get around the tank. It’s not necessarily feeding off the fish BUT where it attaches to the fish causes irritation to the fish’s skin. That irritation can lead to open sores which start to snowball very quickly into a bacterial infection. So Epistylis is not the actual cause of fish death but it leads to a bacterial infestation that will lead to death.

I went through ick a year and a half ago and almost all my fish died. It was my fault I added to many fish to my 60 gallon at one time I added 11 fish after that my tank got milky white and went through a bacterial bloom. A couple of days went by and I noticed some of the fish with white spots and they were rubbing there bodies on the substrate and decorations. I turned up the temperature in the tank and added some API super ick cure but almost all my fish ended up dying I was left with just a couple of fish. Well I have learned my lesson and will never add that many fish to my tank at one time again maybe 2 at a time that’s it. Keep up the great work John and Lisa you two are awesome I love the channel.

I've dealt with ich a few times and all I've ever done is turn up the heat, and feed them garlic. I've heard the garlic helps to cleanse their systems while the heat is speeding up the ich life cycle. Your waters gonna stink, but I've never lost a fish to ich. Raise temp to 87 degrees - which kills ick - for a week beyond when you last see it. 82 degrees will do absolutely nothing except spread it faster - even with salt. Fish can take it. Salt (table salt, with or without iodine) will help fish shed it as it stimulates their slime coat. Add up to 1.25 tsp per gallon for catfish, 1.5 tsp/g for most other fish; and cichlids can handle 2 tsp/g. Patience is key, and the temp never dropping below 86 as well. You may need to increase aeration. Once you have killed it all, it is gone. I’ve had clown loach tanks hit 66 in the winter and no ick. I use the heat treatment as a preventative with all new fish.

DO NOT USE SALT WITH CORYS. they're plated instead of scaled or something and salt is very bad for them. I would reccomend turning the heat to about 82 and feeding garlic. Not an expert but a life long hobbyist, I’ve always had luck with a good large water change 30-40%, increased temperatures for a week or so and adding some aquarium salt (even in freshwater tanks). If that doesn’t work then I will try medicines. Just my experience. All that said prevention is always easier. Consistent water change and monitoring of nitrite, ammonia and Ph (to a lesser extent, I live in hard water USA where ph is difficult my fish don’t seem to mind the high ph so long as everything else is good) levels will avoid a ton of problems in the first place.

@PaulZyCZ

tl;dr: I'd also highly recommend to _vacuum_the_gravel_, esp. in a tank where fish had the Ich. I didn't have a case of Ich in my fish tanks since being a kid, years later I didn't do a quarantine with Rams. They went to a planted tank set for them, good filtration, temperature set to 80.6 F (27 °C), regular maintenance and a school of Blue Neon Tetras. Few days later I found out the female had spots on her fin, but they didn't spread and it disappeared later. One poor tetra caught it too, but then it disappeared. Completely forgetting about it, I moved some plants into a community tank. Months later a delayed maintenance and swordtails had a breakout of Ich (guppies, tetras, SAE all seemed fine), so raise the temperature, add kitchen (err...) salt, go to buy some Esha chemicals... it took weeks to cure them and there's no guarantee there are no "spores" in the gravel. Somewhere I read the inert "spores" can survive for quite a long time.

This was the 3rd ich video I watched and the only one that suggested owners are lazy or ignorant. Love lots of y'all's other videos. There is a lot of negative talk about "laziness" in your videos & usually I Just assume you are referring to people who don't do routine maintenance, and on that I would agree with you. I’m pretty new to the hobby so I’m sorry if this is horrifying... Have you ever heard of Ick showing up on multiple fish (not always on more than one fish at a time and no more than 1-5 spots on any one fish) but then with zero changes to the tank (no water changes, no feeding, no medicine or temp changes) the Ick completely disappears? My tank is around 70-73f. I introduced fish every week or so in the beginning and they went straight into that tank. I have noticed flashing in the past but then that behavior disappeared within days. The PetSmart had Ick in some of their tanks and the Petco has Ick on their fish almost 100% of the time I visit. I don’t have many options for purchasing fish in my area. Now, after almost 6 months I’ve never seen Ick take over my tank despite not making changes to the tank except when the water tests say otherwise. In fact, there’s not a hint of sickness in my tank. Thankfully. They all go crazy for food and otherwise seem to always be foraging or just up to something. No one on the bottom of the tank or gasping at the top. Is this common? 29g Not heavily planted (I think...but I’m not totally sure how to judge that b/c I have only 7 plant species in there and they’re pretty young) 4 Mollies, 8 Guppies, 5 White Clouds, 3 Neon Tetras, 4 Mystery Snails, 4 Shrimp. I’ve already been able to isolate offspring in new tanks from this “main” tank!

A point to add for anyone going to add aquarium salt. It is extremely important to research the type of fish you have on whether or not they can tolerate having salt added to the water. Avoid putting salt with scale-less fish such as catfish (cories, plecos, loaches etc). You could cause heavy irritation and if you add enough, straight up kill them.

Keeping the tank darkened has no effect on ich , but does however work with velvet (Oodinium) as it is able to photosynthesize.

Ich is very easily treated in a saltwater tank. It might work for freshwater, but I’ve never tried it. If the fish is still eating, simply soak its food in the liquid from a jar of minced garlic. I had a Coral Beauty Angelfish that was covered in ick. I tried this bizarre cure based on the advice of all old school reef keeper I knew and within 24 hours it was totally clear and it didn’t spread to the other fish in the tank.

@@ethansing8754Hi Ethan! The fish got tired of garlic soaked pellets and stopped eating them. So I don’t know if this remedy truly works or not. The Paraguard works too slow for ich (but great for other illnesses!). Ultimately, what cured ich was Kordon Rid-Ich Plus.

So, what happens if the water is in the correct parameters, temp of water is 78 degrees and fry fish (Fancy Guppies) where in the same tank for 3 weeks, all of sudden get ick? No new fish, added. Nursery tank was cycled before adding the fries in there. Reason for nursery tank, was because I knew my female was pregnant, and I was prepared for the new arrivals. Lost two fries in one day and the white spot appeared over night on only one. Granted these fries are super tiny and I may have missed the white spots and I even use a magnifying glass to see them. Took the one last fry out and placed in a bowl till I could set up another new tank for him to stay in. Cleaned the nursery tank with bleach and all contents of what was in the nursery tank. Boiled water, and rinsed super well. Now the last remaining fry is in a new tank, and will be adding aquarium salt to help just in case. Should I get Ick Medicine also? Thanks for all of your videos! They are super helpful. I've had fish tanks years ago, but just recently got back into it. =)

I find it absolutely crazy that this video lacks so much information and has a lot of lose ends. You guys brought up how medications can be harmful to plants, shrimp, and snails. However, a lot of loaches with smaller scales can't tolerate medications, and require specific treatment. I'm not trying to be insulting, this just seems like a super basic info video from a channel that I have always found to be an excellent source of information. Great channel, great content, great people! This one just left a lot to be desired! Especially on a disease that can clear an entire tank population :(
