Great video once again Jarrad! RE the lack of general coverage receiver, one can always have another rig for that. The Yaesu FTM-100D, FTM-400XDR or FT-2D handheld all have great general coverage receivers. The IC-9700 is definitely on my list, probably in about a year or so, to be my primary base station VHF / UHF rig. I've been wondering how to add the SSB capability and I think consolidating rigs to this one rig is the answer. 73 de KM4RT
Just a quick correction, the IC-9700 features a UHF/SO-239 connector for 2M, and N female connectors for 70cm & 23cm. I (Jarrad VK3BL) made a mistake discussing a user who replaced the factory SO-239 2M connector with an eBay sourced N Female Connector.
Dear Jarrad, yes the editing would be painful, but seeing your head all the time...! ;) If talking about the RJ45 ethernet connector it would be so cool if you inserted a shot of the rear panel, likewise a closeup of the offending SO-239 socket and the 'N' socket for the other bands...too much head and not enough close ups of the actual device you are talking about... regards.
Jarrad, around 15:00 you state no commercially produced radio uses the 10Mhz reference to continuously keep the radio frequency "locked/adjusted". I think the K3/K3S does, it uses the 10Mhz reference to continuously adjusts the master oscillator. When enabled, and with10Mhz signal is connected, the calibration display shows a flashing "*" to indicate a lock/adjustment. When watching the Master Oscillator value, one can see it being automatically adjusted as the radio warms up. If the 10Mhz reference signal is lost, the last value of the MO is used thereafter, until power off. I'm not sure how often it re-calibrates however. Of course, this requires the optional K3EXREF module in the K3(S). Quote from K3EXREF manual: "While locked to the external source, the reference oscillator frequency is maintained within 2 Hz" I like your videos, keep up the good work. Steve VE3RX
I was aware a few HF rigs provide this option, but I was specifically referring to VHF & UHF rigs. After all, if you used a transverter with a HF rig on 23cm, you'd need to 'lock' the transverter as well. 73, Jarrad VK3BL :)

agreed jarrad we have a very good icom service center here. i was coming here to see how the icom performed on weak signals and how it was listening to beacons, on wspr or msk 144 meteor scatter. or general ssb chatter with some digi modes thrown in how does it cope with very strong signals in ssb how does the pre amp work is it good does the radio work with the after market external pre amps . Is the radio suitable for eme operations. can a 10 mhz reference be easily fitted. how detailed is the water fall is there a way to see the waterfall on the computer .................. it would be great if you can do some of those things and actually show the 9700 on air.
WSPR transmit you need a GPS or Atomic clocked locked radio - there has never been a commercial VHF/UHF all mode that does this you’re best off with a transverter for your FTDX and lock them both. EME same deal. Meteor scatter probably the same. I’ve had 40 over 9 signals no problems none of the local repeaters trigger overload with the preamp on and yes it supports powering external preamps up to a few hundred mA. Waterfall on computer you need to buy RS-BA1 v2 just like the IC-7300 as I said its more an SSB DXers rig, satellite rig and just something to add capability to your shack if you want to run niche modes pick up a cheap IC910H and mod it or better yet use a kuhne transverter with your HF rig and lock both. 73, Jarrad VK3BL :)
Slim runs a quad of FT-817s without even TXCOs for his 1.2GHz to 24GHz setup and just uses GPS locked kuhne transverters no problems with SSB field day contests you can hear his setup on 1.2GHz in one of my IC-R8600 videos. Hi freq stuff or “weak signal 5 minute WSPR” gets real niche and with very few people interested in that or able to setup an EME array + amp etc to survive the 260dB path loss for moon bounce you wont find commercial gear from the big 3 catering to such a tiny market and jacking the prices up for everyone else. Already lots of reports or the radio being VERY Unstable & Drifting all over the place & more than just a little bit.It's a lot of money for an UNSTABLE transceiver I think.
On a recent poll of owners 70+ out of ~100 said they were satisfied. You can’t please every one all the time, and a certain group has been very vocal. There is a reason I do not recommend this radio to the EME crowd, but that doesn’t make it s bad radio. 73, Jarrad VK3BL
Rate My Radio ICOM is being very quiet about it which is not cool on their part. The issues should have been addressed prior to the radio being released. The consumers who pay their hard earned cash should not be used as BETA Testers.
Lets be clear, the radios - including those owned by the complainants - have always met the specification sheet. If you buy one thing dreaming it is something else, that's on you. Its especially on you when as I state, no previous VHF/UHF all mode has EVER met your desired spec. Are all the previous models including the IC-9100 rubbish that no one can use? I think not. ANAN 7000 have 10 Mhz Ref that is live update. In IC-9700 you can press auto tune for 10 Mhz ref , and you could do that every 10 min :) one day will be FW update to do it for you. About the 0.5 pm 10 MHz crystal in IC-9700 it is 0.5 at 10 Mhz not at 1300 Mhz If you multiplay 10MHz to 1300 MHz you will understand why IC-9700 is so unstable With TX the radio warm up and change freq. It is like working SAT mode ;) and little play on RIT and you are fine, My IC-9100 do the same so I ask ICOM and answer is , 10 MHz crystal in the radio is 0.5 not the radio on operational freq. Stupid Spec.
Yes, after we got the IC-7610 we 'foolishly' traded it for a Kenwood TS-590SG so we could do some content on that. Stay tuned for that we'll be publishing a video on how to get the most out of your superhet receiver. Dear Dennis, I clipped the microphone input at times but admittedly didn't process it, but I usually don't. I must admit my brain wasn't functioning well for words today so perhaps that is why :). I also have been using an ipad for audio recording rather than my iphone which I previously used (they control the camera), as I upgraded my iphone and it lacks a 3.5mm microphone jack.
