Got that right! I'd easily pay 350 for an all mode VHF/UHF. Whoever makes on first is going to rake in the $. I think problem is most are not aware these modes exist and the value they present. Kind of like a mix of HF modes and standard VHF/UHF modes.

yep we have a bunch of 220 in central ny. this seems like a rehash of a commercial rig like ther7 'new' ht. Love my ic706iig.

Meh... Yaesu has an 80 Watt for $170 and a 65 watt for $150. I don't really see that Icom is giving anything meaningful for the additional money ($240)...and they are competing with their own radio, the IC- 2300H...same power, less money. Not to mention, all these other radios are already available and in stock.

I like a radio that includes air band receive. I live near a municipal airport (KFRG) and I like to monitor the tower and the aircraft in the pattern.

Good review on the Icom. Looks to be a quality radio, and as you said, perfect for rural use. If you are in the market for a high power 2 meter radio, also give the Yaesu FT-2980 a hard look. 80 Watts output vs. 65 Watts, 200 memory channels. No fan which is a plus. It is larger and heavier, but is priced at about $155.00. I just bought a 2nd FT-2890 to make a APRS Digipeater. Perfect with 80 watts in my rural area. Either will be a great radio. Icom tends to like their radios a lot and charges accordingly. They are great radios.

what i don't get is that these companies keep coming out with new versions of the same radio... 50 to 65w 2m rigs are dime a dozen. why not a 2m 100 watt model? i can get a yaesu 2980 or 3100 for half the price of this.

FYI: The foghorn is part of the public address system of your radio. You can sound the foghorn through a hailer horn or an external speaker. Your radio can sound the horn automatically using standard patterns, or you can sound the horn manually. When you manually operate the foghorn, sounds received through the horn can be heard through the radio speaker between soundings.

Good looking radio. I'd like to see Icom release a 50w or 65w 220 radio. I'm here in East Tennessee and there's a few 220 repeaters over here. I'd like to get on 220, but the availability on a true 50-65w radio is really hard to come by.

I believe the foghorn is meant to be an enticement for mariners to get it. Many of the marine VHF’S have that feature on them.

It looks a *lot* like the I-Com 2300H with a white display and different knob. Can anyone find any actually different between them on the spec sheets? Edit: Watched the interview with Ray Novak, it's a 2300h just with parts that are currently available. It will soon replace the 2300h when parts and stocks run out.

This one is analog. I believe the 2300 is DSP. Does that help? I don't know what difference that makes personally. I have the 2300 and it works great.

@@Ardren the 2300 is digital.(DSP) the 3500 is analog. Icom is replacing the 2300 with the 3500. They are having difficulty getting the parts to make the 2300. There are few differences between the two radios. Nothing of any importance. Except the price.

@@electrolytics ICom doesn't mention a DPS on the product page or manual for the 2300h. But I did just see the interview were they say it's a 2300h refresh due to parts. Why didn't they just call it the 2301h and then I wouldn't have wasted all this time trying to work out what it really is.. Never a better time to get a good deal on the 2300h too

Thanks for the review Jason. It's 6 months since your review and as of Dec 2022, Icom still doesn't list an Instruction manual on their website. I find that a bit odd. Was hoping to find out if the V3500 includes memory banks. For the 2300H, Icom states: "The DMS (Dynamic Memory Scan) system allows you to scan selected banks from 10 memory banks by simply adding and deleting bank links." But no mention of memory banks on the home page for the V3500. And while the V3500 seems to be a decent 2 meter radio, why make a new 2m radio when the 2300H is still available, unless they are planning to drop the 2300H model soon. What I'd REALLY like to see is a replacement to the ID-4100 that retains all the 4100 features, but adds color display & other features from the ID-52. And keep the 5100 in production until they are ready to replace it with newer technology.

I purchased one of these radios for hunting in my area, I saw the VHF mode and didnt even think to look further into it, some friends of mine own the same radio but it was apparently programmed to be able to transmit on the Marine Channels like 68, 69, and 72 can anybody give me any idea how to go about doing this? i have no idea how to program these radios at all, just looking for some help and maybe a video somewhere, thanks

On the Icom site. There was some download about marine channel guide. Will this be coming out in Ham, Marine, and maybe other bands. One platform for several radios?

I believe this is the most expensive basic two meter mobile out there. A Yaesu 3100R is $150.00 from DxEngineering right now. And there is an 80 watt Yaesu 2989R at 80 Watts for $170. I don't know why I would want to pay $240 for this new Icom.

A lot of rural still use VHF systems. 200 memories is a bit low for monitoring. But the Y only has 200.

I forgot the APRS, Winlink, and PKT communities with no data or PS2 mouse port. In some areas, you feel the need, the need for speed, er, power on this modes to reach gateways. Sorry, I was in Maverick mode

So Jason, @hamradio2.0 , Icom is not making sense to me in their price points as opposed to features. let me clarify. This radio seems like a great deal, especially for the price point. mainly because of power output alone. But, when it comes to the IC-t10 i cant understand that msrp of $260. makes absolutely no sense to me. I recently made my rants on the t-10, just because it doesnt make sense that the new wouxun uv9d pro looks like a better feature packed radio with great performance for way less. Now some people will say " you cant compare apples to oranges". Really though? am i missing something here ?

What features does one get with higher price tag on the IC-V3500 which are absent on the IC-2300H? The answer as far as I can tell from what I have read is this: it has a different LCD. The IC-V3500 has a black on white LCD while the IC-2300H LCD switches between amber and green. The essentially identical specifications with the IC-2300H include: Receiver sensitivity, dimensions, the supplied microphone and accessories, channel count, weight, frequency stability, audio power, IF frequency, and frequency stability. I am underwhelmed by the release of this unit. Things I do not see and would like to see on a new 2meter mono-band mobile from Icom include: the option for a few more alphanumeric characters on the display, D-Star support which my IC-2200H included (my first D-Star experience was using my 2200), a speaker connection on the microphone jack for using it with some type of sound card. The introduction of IC-2300H lost the D-Star option which the IC-2200H provided. The IC-V3500 does not appear to provide any substantial upgrades from IC-2300H functionality and comes with a price increase. I suspect that the lack of much buzz in the Amateur community since the release of the IC-V3500 is the result of it duplicating an extant product without substantial improvements. 🙄

September release? why the heck promote a radio that will be forgotten before release? And they need to get closer to $180 or it will not do well against FT 2980r at 80+ watts with a data plug and WIRES capability, it's more in line with the 3100 at $140 with these features. ICOM needs to rethink its pricing. Is this even made by them or VERTEX?
