Well during WW2 a lot of Hollywood stars served in someway. Even in the USA not only did everyone know someone who was serving in the war, the USA had major rations on just about everything. The only time American have been limited on what you can buy due to limits was during the energy crisis where you could wait hours to get 10 gallons of gas.
@@JAM661 Yes, there was rationing. That is not the same as being under constant threat from enemy soldiers on your doorstep. 9/11 is the closest Americans have known, to what all of Europe was going through in WW2.
So true,,these so called influencers nowdays can't even hold a candle to Audrey..What she done through her whole life was incredible as you know..Such a beautiful woman...I only wish that I could go back in time to meet her
They left unsaid the most amazing part. She was the same age as Anne Frank. And after the war Anne's father Otto Frank personally asked Audrey to play the part in the prospective movie. But Audrey sadly declined because the memories of the war years were too traumatic.
She barely survived the war. She was dangerously malnourished and developed hepatitis. She was permanently effected. It probably contributed to her early death.
@@elisaschulman2356 That 1940 to '45 period of enforced starvation was limited to her early youth. There are POWs who also dropped much weight, but after the war ate back to normal body weight and lived for decades. Postwar she chose to stay under-average-weight rail slim. She had screen characters (as in Breakfast at Tiffany's) who smoked and drank. So if in real life she did too, one or both may have contributed to her eventual cancer.
@@JudgeJulieLit hard to eat, let alone be a glutton when she saw so many starve to death for so long, so many years. The reality is too different. It's a culture shock. My mom survived France's Nazis as a little girl. My brave grandpa didn't, Grandma barely.
She was more brave than even she knew. Nazis were relentless and vicious in catching and exterminating anyone they wanted to. Audrey was a beautiful soul. More than a wonderful actress.
Audrey was always a hero to me. From the day I saw _Breakfast At Tiffany's_ as a young person she captured my attention. I had to know more, so I checked out one of her biographies at my school library, found out she had been active during WWII. Took a couple more years for me to find out Audrey had been in the Dutch resistance, but I am a student of WWII so it surprised me that she spoke so rarely about that till later in her life. I still feel her role in Steven Spielberg's _Always_ (remake of WWII era movie _A Guy Named Joe_ ) is overlooked by many...
S man worked on the set of Breakfast at Tiffany's. When a discussion started between filming takes about who served in WWII. Several cast and crew were discussing what they did when a crew member spoke up and mentioned how Audrey had helped smuggle him out. She was reportedly very humble in admitting she did help.
She originally wanted to be a ballet dancer but because of the effects of the starvation the nazis inflicted on the Netherlands she did not have the stamina. She turned to modelling and acting. It is said that the starvation and malnutrition she suffered was instrumental in her final illness. And she was the same age as Anne Frank
@@mrgreene3290 Interesting that starvation might have lifelong effects. Might explain a lot about my own inabilities after my 6 weeks not eating when I was 13 ( something went wrong with my liver.... given extreme unction but then got better. Obviously)
@James-cz5hf Why do Americans bring politics into every discussion. I'm not American, I don't care about your politics or American politics, which most of the world treats as a joke. There is no mention of politics in this thread.
She is a "...Pretty little Dutch girl..." that's a song my wife sings occasionally that her grandmother taught her to remind her of her heritage. Audrey Hepburn certainly fits that bill.
My mother was a pretty little Dutch girl too “ who lived through Hitlers creepy hatred of all Jewish people! my mother was engaged to a Jewish boy who worked underground and was caught and killed , my mother and the Jewish gentleman’s mother traveled to where he was and saw only white rags waving at the top of the camp , afterwards they were put to death, they gave my mother his Jewish cross ! my mom told me this story when l was little , along with some other things that she and her family lived through! after the liberation my mother and daddy married in Amsterdam along with her family. but l wished l had paid more attention to the World War 2 Stories l was too young to appreciate them , although l did retain some of it ! Thanks for allowing me to share 🙏🇺🇸💕
@@florabraswell-nm1re _thank you so much for sharing and for keeping the memories alive! stay blessed!_ (from srilanka, during the time of the "second holocaust", this time in gaza)
@@user-gf5nu9os2n if you look at her real name, mentioned in the video, you see that she has a dutch first name, a dutch last name and a English lastname. she was half British half dutch, and grew up in the Netherlands.
Audrey Hepburn , such beauty bravery and modesty . Thank you Ms. Hepburn for your service and courage . They do not make them like you anymore . Rest In Peace . ❤🇧🇪
@markrose53 I'm 61 years old and a Marine Corps Veteran , my Grandfather was part of the Greatest Generation as he served as a United States Marine in the Pacific theater so don't tell me ill forget because you got your head up Biden's Ass most useless president since Woodrow Wilson in office right now , Trump 2024 and Semper Fi !
wayne wanted to serve but republic pictures interfered to keep him in movies. also tried to get into oss & asked john ford to take him over in film unit. no dice also, as 34 yr old father he was classified 3a
A truly beautiful lady, inside & out. I've read a biography of her amazing life. It always seemed to me that even from such a young age, her life had been tinged with sorrow and saddness. Her experiences and memories of the War impacted her so deeply and she carried them through life. It is unfathomable to me what it must have been like growing up during such formative years with the tragic horrors of war. So remarkable she survived the depravations, especially knowing of her brave contributions in the Dutch resistance. Ms. Hepburn's efforts as a UNICEF Embassador for children of war torn countries, and victims of famine were truly heartfelt and ardent. You could see and hear the empathy in her eyes and passion in her voice as she advocated for the most innocent victims. It was not an act because she had personally experienced the same terrible conditions. Her young heart was able to preserve her love of dance, music, and art throughout her life. So many marvelous performances throughout her stellar acting career; Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, Charade, Wait Until Dark, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Funny Face, and so many more. Every performance so rivveting and memorable. She became a Hollywood Icon, but I always remember her as that selfless, brave, and heroric young girl fighting for survival and freedom. Thank you, Ms. Hepburn. God bless you. I pray you found peace and solace for eternity. 🙏💖✨
To watch her in my fair lady Is to just fall head over heels In love with herr, The amount of charity work she did throughout the years is phenomenal. A beautiful lady with a beautiful heart.
Such a beautiful, graceful lady she was, and a lovely soul as well. My Mother was an English war bride, I remember her telling me about the heavy draperies her family's home had and how they would rush around extinguishing lights and drawing the drapes when the air raid sirens sounded. I can't even imagine having to live under those terrifying circumstances. We don't realize how easy our lives are in comparison and tend to become complacent.
My parents grew up under Japan's rule. Air raids by both Japanese and Allies were everyday happenstance. Having immigrated to the USA, July 4th wasn't the best day for them as the fireworks brought back traumatic memories.
My mother used to tell the story of when her mother and her was about to bake a cake when a Doodlebug's engine (a V1) cut out. They immediately dived under the table, which was an Anderson shelter, a table made of reinforced steel with slide down shutters. The V1 landed in the next street blowing in all the windows but not harming them. The only thing they were annoyed about was they had left the cake mixture on the table and it was covered in shards of glass! They had spent ages getting the 'real' eggs together for the cake. They were almost killed by a V1 and they were annoyed about losing the cake mixture!
Excellent post! We will never know what they went through because of the fact that we FORGOT..So sad that we don't teach about that time in history. Now we teach gender crap. So fkin sad. .
Sadly evil returned. My sister with her family in Ukraine lives with air sirens. Today again putin dropped rockets on the city of Odessa as a retaliation to the military aid that came from the US. Please pray for my people. Ukrainians are courageous more than anyone today but they need help. The monster is too big. SLAVA UKRAINE 🇺🇦!!!
Smart ,funny brave, beautiful.an incredible actress and a world class humanitarian . This lady covered all the bases with a style and grace that has never been matched.
Not the same country, but during WWII my father flew C-47s dropping paratroopers in European combat zones. He was shot down in Holland and the Dutch Underground found him and helped get him back to the Allies. Dutch families, some with children, fed and sheltered him. His guides were young. They all risked their lives for one American pilot. I can't express my gratitude enough.
I hope Ms. Hepburn heard this at least once before she died: "Thank you for your service." She wasn't a soldier, but she did her part to ensure the Nazis' defeat. She was incredibly brave because as a girl, she faced down enemy soldiers with nothing more than flowers in her hands.
Because she worked her but off for the Cause with almost no Food she suffered a life time of weak health long after the War was over ! A hero who did not care about being a hero !
She was from my mother and father's era. We knew her. Because when our mother used to let us stay up late we watched her movies with her. As I grew up, remember her movies. I realized. She was not only an actress she was an actor". An extreme acting ability of above measure. She was mostly fascinating in drama films. I never forgot her. Miss or Mrs Audrey Hepburn, thank you for your talent and all the entertainment you brought to us.
Audrey Hepburn was so beautiful in so many ways! She actually suffered from malnutrition during the war and it affected her health and her bones. She was a trained ballerina and it showed so much in the way she carried herself with style and grace. She was my role model in my teens back in the 60s. No hippy clothes for me! Simple dresses and stylish shoes or slacks with a tunic blouse.😊
Clever, talented, innocent eyes and her unique smile how could they ever believe she was against them! She was always one of a kind! Never another who has ever come close!
I recently worked in a nursing home in Colorado. We took care of a lady. When she passed away, her family enlightened us to the fact that during WWII, she was a British SPY IN BERLIN GERMANY !!!..... for two years !!!😮😮❤
Here is my thank you: Thank you for making this story and so much more stories known to us. Now it's up to us to get those stories out to even more people, thus keeping the legacy and spirit of these many good and courageous women and men alive ...
Who'd knew about someone you'd known about an actress total respect for this lady I have such respect for them now known these facts of the greatest generation
There was a time when Hollywood was something to be proud of . I see these "shorts" of hero actors who didn't think twice about serving their country , and now I learn about Audrey Hepburn . I am very proud of these Americans , and very thankful.
Let me assume most actors today differ from you politically. I try not to paint people with a broad brush. It is getting harder to do that these days with how divided our country is.
We have a local woman who was a girl in the Netherlands during the war. Always at Veterans Day events. During our Honor Flights she would come to the gathering and thank every veteran and shake their hand- not explaining why she did it I told the veteran I was assigned to, what her background was.
You've apparently have not read the books "Hollywood Babylon" and "Hollywood Babylon II". Hollywood has ALWAYS been like they are right now, they just hid it better. Also, since WWII, there has not been an 'honorable' war that the US has engaged in. They have all been "dirty little wars". GI Joe used to be admired the world over as a liberator, not so much today, today we are the oppressors. "Beware the military-industrial complex...." -Ike Eisenhower
Ms Audry is symbolic of every resistance fighter. We known her name and her face, but there were many thousands who each did their bit, many dying in anonymity. Her's is their face and she always said that.
Thank you Ms. Hepburn for your service, and yes, for your courage! Thank you for all the enjoyment that you gave to the world through your profession. God Bless. RIP. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My wife's grandma was in German occupied France during these blackouts. She opened the upstairs window with shutter as a 15yo one night, and her father knocked her clean out as the Nazis shot at her open window until the family shut it. Can still see some if the bullet holes to this day, as it was the towns old original train station depot bedore the war. Amazing the sacrifices people/kids made during that period.
I get so emotional looking at her. You can see the same constant soul behind her eyes no matter what age she was. A once in a generation gem that I wish my generation in gen z could look at more as an inspiration compared to the celebrities and tik tok influencers we have now
I saw the movie about her childhood. She was a very brave young girl. God bless her for her courage, determination and dedication to help the allies during the war.
