People used to get married at 16 and have several children by 22, so for him to have that sort of legacy by 22 isn’t all that surprising. They lived life in a different, faster way than we do.

@@mod8179 it's because back then the life expectancy was around 30 years, dude was considered basically an old man ehen he died. In fact, in America life expectancy was much shorter, if you madd it to 20 years you were lucky

Maitequilla life expectancy was not 30 years and was considered to be as young as it is today. People lived to be in their 60s. The average AGE was 30, because the number was highly skewed due to mortality rates in infants, diseases, war, etc. That’s the only reason the average age is so low, it’s the mean of all of these different factors combined and not taken into consideration or split amongst categories. 30 was still considered to be a young adult. If you have all of these young people dying off from these factors, it would have affected the average greatly and made it lower.

I plan on doing the same (though I have an idea of what I'd like for the cremains of what they can't use), and while I know that nowadays that I'd never be displayed this way (especially if I specifically said I don't want them to be), it still really upsets me. I'm donating my body to science because I want future people in my boat to have as much known about their mess as possible. Not so some museum can have admissions money.

It has been confirmed recently (January 2023) that Charles Byrne's remains will be taken down and will no longer be part of the museum when it reopens later this year. While there has been no further news on whether or not he'll be buried, at least his body will no longer be gawked at, as he feared would happen.

@sery syo I get what you're saying and from a logical standpoint you're absolutely right. The man died a long time ago and since he's dead, he won't be around to care about what happens to his bones. Neither are his family members. Still, I personally think it would be best if his wishes were to be fulfilled. As you previously stated: no one's gonna pay to see an oversized (fake) skeleton. But then why does he even have to be in that museum to begin with? If people don't care about a skeleton, then why would it matter if the skeleton was removed? They already have enough DNA samples (according to this video). And there are people with the same condition who would take his place. So then they would have a new skeleton to display as well. Even though it's been over two centuries, it would be the respectful and human thing to do if they were to bury him at sea like he wanted. If I had a condition that caused people to stare at me in awe or disgust my whole life, I wouldn't want to be displayed so people could stare at me some more after I died. I honestly just find it rude and disrespectful, even though it's all purely symbolic. Sorry for the long rant. I hope everyone has a nice day!

One thought that is sticking in my head that I haven't seen mentioned in the comments: can you imagine the horror of his friends when Hunter unveiled and displayed the skeleton 4 years after they thought they managed to bury their friend where no one could get to him? Spending 4 years thinking that they were successful in giving him the peaceful resting place that he so longed for, only to open the paper one morning and see this bastard a) stole his body and b) is now displaying it in the exact way that he dreaded in life I can't imagine the devastation. I hope they didn't feel guilty

I saw his skeleton as a little girl on a school trip, and never got to hear his full story. I didn't even know he died so young. A lot of the artifacts I saw weren't human and it felt like he wasn't either. Heartwarming to know his friends tried to fulfil his wishes, and hopefully one day his remains will be buried as he wanted.

My suggestion for an iconic corpse.... Abraham Lincoln. His corpse took a decades long trip that included body snatchers, several burials, several coffins, being kept in a storeroom behind the crypt he was supposed to be in and his coffin was opened multiple times.

Chicken Permission I don’t think you can just replicate a skeleton. They would essentially have to clone Byrne, find a surrogate mother to carry this clone, raise the child, and then eventually wait for him to die and collect his remains. Seems a little unethical to me.

TaylorQ You do realize that the majority of the dinosaur skeletons that are on display in museums, particularly the very large ones, are casts and replicas, right? Bones are heavy and become more fragile with age so museums make replicas to facilitate the actual display of these skeletons and keep the originals for study and preservation. If we can do this for dinosaur bones, we can do it for humans. Also, I'm not sure if you're serious or sarcastic about the cloning thing.

Honestly you don't even need that. If there's several people from the same area with the same condition willing to give up their bodies if he's let go, then let him go entirely. Multiple new and complete specimens of similar type, preserved using modern methods, would provide far more data than a 200 year old skeleton crudely hacked up by a guy who didn't even know what DNA was. There's no benefit in keeping it at this point besides pride.

As of Jan 2023 the Hunterian Museum 'officially' retired Charles' body from display but have made no further statement about following through with his death plans to be buried at sea. Can only hope that, one day, his wishes are finally fulfilled.

Hey all, this Sunday (29th) will be the 11th anniversary of my Dad’s death. I just want to thank Caitlin and everyone for helping me deal with it in a more positive way. Instead of getting drunk like I used to, this year I’m aiming to go through the day remembering all the great things he did for me, and all the lovely times we spent together. I feel much stronger this year, thank you.

This one is relatively new, but Judy Garland died in 1969 and was buried until 2017 at Ferncliff Cemetery in NY - fact is, she had been buried in Ferncliff longer than she actually lived. Then, last year, her daughter Liza Minnelli had her removed from her NY mausoleum and moved to a cemetery in LA so the family could all be buried together. After all that time, would they have removed and recasketed what was left of Judy prior to the coast to coast flight? What exactly takes place when someone's remains are moved like that?

Reminds me of one of my favorite people to ever exist-Robert Wadlow. He lived in Illinois, and got up to 8’11” and was still growing when he died of a foot infection at the age of 22. All around he was a pretty cool guy-he was affectionately known as the gentle giant by his local community of Alton, IL. He liked photography, history, and working with children. He was adored by just about everyone who knew him, who described him as being sweet and intelligent, even though he led a difficult life and was often mocked. Thousands of people, almost 30,000 I think, many from his home town, attended his funeral. I’m happy to say he’s since been able to rest in peace. His untimely death is saddening, but I find it a bit uplifting knowing how well loved he was by those around him, and that he has remained even in death well respected.

I went to the Huntarian museum as part of research for an art project. I have a pituitary brain tumor as Charles Byrne did although my particular tumor has different symptoms. I found myself in floods of tears in the museum and was struck by his story and surprised that Byrne's wishes had not been fulfilled by the museum. I'd also just been diagnosed with a rare brain disease and hashimotos thyroid disease. Seeing body parts matching my conditions was incredibly humbling and suddenly all the body parts and skeletons became real human beings rather than part of a medical display. It was a deeply emotional experience and not what I'd expected at all. I truly hope that the Huntarian museum respects Charles Byrne's wishes.

So I know an article just came out how they just identified one of the bodies from the 9/11 terrorist attack in the United States. There were a lot of comments about how people didn't realize that they had not identified every single body. But it sounds like they've only identified half of the remains and they're still working on identifying the rest. I think it'd be really cool to kind of talk about that process or how exactly they do that or where do they keep all those bodies that they're trying to identify 17 years later.

Simply Adventures they're at the 9/11 museum in a section that only the families of unidentified victims can go to. I'm pretty sure they're still actively trying to identity the remains but a lot of them are burned past the ability to identify. As new science comes out they try to figure it out.

Simply Adventures you have to understand there were only about 300 whole bodies, the rest was only parts, some very little, small as a nail; the collapse and fire raging for months destroyed many corpses and DNA; there are over 10.000 parts kept in the special institution that were found at the Ground Zero site that are unidentified; technology is getting better and those unidentified parts are slowly getting retested

as of the 15th of October 2020 the huntarian museum isn’t planned to reopen until 2022 and a spokesperson claims that an ‘update on plans for all of the displays in the museum will be issued in due course’. :/:/

I've seen his skeleton at The Hunterian Museum in London a few years ago!! It was really quite amazing but, as fascinating as it was from a human-biology and scientific point of view, I didn't know that he was so actively against the idea of his body being used like this and because I believe in bodily autonomy, I hope he is properly put to rest soon. ask a mortician: how do you prepare a body in a coffin when its been through severe trauma? eg. a person hit by a train or car accident victim who wasnt wearing a seatbelt. ect do you try to lay it in there properly, do the remains come in a bad which is placed into a coffin ect ect.

Abortion for medical reasons fine but abortion for last resort birth control is SICK...we need to do a better JOB at education. Because i mean i got prego 3 times from using piece of shit birth control from planned parenthood used it right and was careful and used it to the facts the doc said never late and use three different kinds...well past 9 yrs i didnt use birth control at ALL my husband and i were careful and used the pull out method lol but when we decided to have a baby a few months ago when he got his boss job at a coal mine making good money we decided to have one and became prego....what i hate hearing is i cant pay for this baby BUT can use a few hundred to a few thousand dollars or free if us tax payer PAY to kill my poor INNOCENT baby painfully murdering by ripping it apart where they should be most safe and i dont want to carry it for nine months and give birth to give it up to a family who can't have BABY...what the FUCK i dont get it...you can KILL the baby but not give it up for adoption???? I COULDN'T ever bring myself to do that to a INNOCENT baby who didnt ask for this

Hey! A friend and I are doing a road trip across Newfoundland and we learned at the gravesite of the first settlement at Cupids that the ground was so acidic that it would deteriorate the body to the point where only a bit of teeth or hair could be found upon excavation. We thought this was really cool and were hoping you could talk more about it.

One reason could be that lots of soils with high clay content will destroy skeletons over a long period, it doesn't have to be too acidic, it could still be good farmland, it just doesn't like bones. Teeth are amazing and really durable, they'll take much much longer to be destroyed than any other part of the skeleton. Another soil problem for skeleton preservation is if the person has been buried in an area that has lots of evaporation, but not much rainfall (like the Nile Delta). In that environment the collagen will be leeched out of the bones and replaced with recrystalised soil ions which then shatter the bones

Or they may be in storage, but you still can't have them. For example, the British Museum has one of the Tumna beads (Bronze age gold bead the size of an orange), it's not even on display, why not let be with the other 9 beads in Dublin?*. While we are here, when Ireland was partitioned after independence, the north and south agreed on how to divide the Islands artefacts, the Irish Free State got many of the treasures, in exchange for money. I'm glad we chose the artefacts. *I don't know if the National Museum of Ireland has aficially asked for it back, it appears to have been loaned back once as it was on display in Dublin for a brief time in 1991.

There has been campaigns for certain artifacts to be returned to Ireland and other countries but of course the British government won't give them back. They offered to 'lend' Ancient Egyptian items to a musueam in Egypt recently.

I've never understood why so many parents hide death from their children. I always found it more unsettling if family members or pets just "went away." My children haven't been shielded from it. Thank you for helping your children accept the natural cycle of life as well. 😊

CynB Hi and I love how you made death a honest discussion with your kids. I did the same thing but I have family members that own a funeral home and would just terrify the children with hellish tales from work. The damage was done to other kids but I didn’t want my kids to feel bad about death. When I found this channel, it reinforced what I was teaching them with a twist of humor. Some (kind of) positive news: when the museum reopens later this year (2023) his bones will no longer be on display! However, the RCS has said in a statement that they will retain the bones for medical research. “Charles Byrne’s skeleton is a very rare specimen showing the effects of an untreated pituitary adenoma, causing acromegaly and gigantism from excessive bone growth... We cannot foresee the ways in which gene and bone analysis technologies may develop that could allow greater understanding of the causes of pituitary acromegaly and gigantism.” So, a half-win there I guess? Still a lot of work to do but I'm optimistic that we can get him buried eventually:')

I think regardless of what ethnic group you belong to remains should be left alone. There was a skeleton they found under stone henge of a young boy who grew up in what is modern day Hungary and had travelled all the way to England and been buried there. Yet not only did archeologists dig him up they then stuffed him away in museum storage. It's frankly disgusting to think in 6000 years time you could be dug up and put in someone else's private collection like they own you.

please do Ötzi (pronounced Etzi, with the E sounding a bit like O) for the next episode. The Iceman (another name of his) is a prehistoric Mummy found in the Ötztal in South Tirol, Italy. He was murdered over 5.000 years ago and fell into a crack in the mountains, where the ice preserved his body until two climbers found him. They were terrified and believed he was recently murdered, so they varried him to the valley. Luckily, his wander-stick was the only part of his keepings that broke during this voyage. He has become very important for the study of prehistoric Alp-people

Hey! Last week the Netherlands hosted the International Aids Conference, and a lot of our Dutch tv channels covered the history of the aids epidemic. One of them made some particularly interesting remarks concerning what they called a revolution in Dutch funeral customs. The disease struck the LGBTQ communities of our cities (especially Amsterdam) particularly hard, and caused many young men and women to die within an exceptionally short period of time. Knowing that there was no cure for their disease at the time, many patients made arrangements for their funerals, but didnt'care for the traditional, sober burial customs. They wanted their funerals to reflect their lives; young and out of the ordinary. There would be music and dancing and colorful caskets (I remember someone mentioning a steward was buried in a KLM-themed one) and given the large number of fatalities (I believe around 5000 people have died of aids in the Netherlands, most of them in the 80s and 90s before the right medicine was available) the epidemic had a huge effect on the Dutch funeral industry, allowing for a more creative and personal approach to ceremonial practices. Perhaps this could be something you'd be interested in discussing? I wonder if something similar happened in other countries affected by aids, it would be interesting to see how one particular disease can change the way we think about death and funeral customs. (ps. love your videos, keep it going! x)

Museums have this bad habit of following the childhood saying of “finders keepers.” Basically saying “well my country pillaged, raped and slaughtered the indigenous people’s who lived in your country 200 years ago so we ‘earned’ these priceless artifacts that belonged to your ancestors” Its different when you have permission, or have been given the pieces by the people they belonged to, but acting as if you are the rightful owner because your ancestors killed innocent people is not okay. Hell if you go tell someone “I have this thing that belonged to your great great great grandmother would you like it back?” And the person says “no” or “you have been taking care of it better than I can” fine keep it, but if the person/people do want it back, it’s not that hard to go “oh okay, can you maybe tell us the history of the piece so that we can have your side of the story and maybe some photos to put on display” like it’s not that hard.

UC Berkeley is still stealing Native skeletons and refusing to return them. I find it ironic that the school that prides itself on being the most radical, philosophically advanced is still doing this. I see flyers advertising talk series on "Making Communism work in the Modern World" held at the school, yet they must keep their "anthropological specimens" at all costs.

There isn’t an inch of space on Earth that didn’t used to belong to someone else. All lands have been invaded and occupied by someone, at some time, this idea that we should give it all back is just not possible. Ancient Egyptian artifacts that were taken by colonials and now reside in European museums, how can they be given back? The government of Egypt is not the same government, or even the same race of people who those artifacts belonged to. The Peruvian mummies of indigenous peoples, do they belong to those of Spanish decent who now occupy that land? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for leaving bodies where they are found, disturbing graves is morbid at the very least. But artifacts that have been in museums for hundreds of years, the people those artifacts belonged to no longer exist, it’s impossible to give them back. Neanderthals used to occupy Europe, should we give it all back to them?

This video reminded me of something: When I was making funeral arrangements for my mother last month, the mortician told me that even if the deceased had documents stating what they'd like done with their corpse, the person who pays for the funeral has ultimate control. How can I make certain my body is disposed of in the way I choose without my next of kin being able to alter it?

My grandparents created a trust and prepaid for their wishes. In the trust they provided the terms of their end of life care, they're cremations, and where they wanted the ashes to be spread. It made everything so much cleaner and easier. They used The Neptune Society but I'm sure there are other options and local places that you could contact.

This show has helped me cope with loss before. Learning about the love and care that goes into being a dietician and the real outlook on death. I lost my best friend who wasnt even 19 and was engaged in a car accident this year. Thanks to this though I at least know what they did and the studies they had to do in order to get their job. Made me a little less stressed and more accepting of the idea.

Long story, then a question. So, I worked in a hotel that was supposedly "haunted," and people were always coming in and doing stupid things trying to scare each other. One Halloween, a guy comes up to the front desk with a large gift bag, and said it was a birthday present for a guest. He gave the guest's name and room number, and instructed them to deliver it to the guest. It all sounded legit. The girl he gave the bag to was new, and forgot to make a note on the account before storing it in the back. Fast forward to December of that year, and the bag resurfaces when rearranging the office. The girl remembered when she got it, but nothing else. A lot of people got in trouble for not taking care of it. We didn't have the name of who it was supposed to go to, and no way to figure it out. So, I went ahead and opened the present. Inside were 2 boxes containing the cremated remains of 2 different people. Had their names on it, but they didn't seem to be related. One had been dead for 10 years, and the other for 2 years. We called the police, but they didn't really know what to do with them either. So, we contacted the funeral home that was on one of the boxes, and they agreed to take them. We thought it was a Halloween prank, but we weren't sure. So I'm wondering: If it was a prank, how easily accessible are the cremated remains of random strangers? Do they just disappear from storage rooms at funeral homes?

I'd like to think a real family member would have came back looking or at least called. There was clearly no communication between the guy that dropped them off and the person that was supposed to get them. The whole thing felt like a bad joke.

The story of how Charles Byrne's body was taken advantage of by curious doctors reminds me of how Truganinis remains were handled. She was a Tasmanian Aboriginal woman who feared her corpse would be dissected and studied. She requested to be buried, but was dug up and her bones kept in a museum for almost 100 years. She's been buried according to her wishes, but it's a shame that they were compromised in the first place.

This is so sad because as you said he had a solid death plan AND his friends were good friends he didnt have any backstabbing they cared about him and they still took him :(

While it's true that when you're dead, your are no more, and it doesn't really matter to you anymore, it matters to the living. Treating a person's will badly is like treating them badly, even after they are dead (and thus completely powerless). Since it doesn't really matter for medicine, is just polite to fulfill his wish. When dead people are mistreated, I suspect that living are also under threat of being somehow mistreated. When everyone is respected, it's chill, it's ok.

He was living when he made the request. Everyone has a right to decide how their body is treated just as the do for their stuff.

My husband was telling me about his life insurance policy from work in the car the other day, while we were on a road trip. Then I was like, "Well, how do you want to be disposed of" and we had a twenty-ish minute conversation about how we were going to get buried. I specifically told him no embalming, get as close to (and cheap as) "chuck me in a hole" as possible. It may have been a morbid conversation, but it wasn't an uncomfortable one :D
