#classicrock #80smusic #shorts #journey
Legendary Journey Guitairst and Founder Neal Schond tells the story of working on the Journey 80s power ballad Open Arms from their 1981 classic record Escape. He hated the song and did not want to play it live but then it became a #1 hit, journey's biggest charts hit ever and so Steve Perry talked him into play it live on their sold escape tour and the crow came unglued. They loved it. So Neal knew he'd have to play it live for the rest of his live. The story of this 80s classic come from an interview with the band Journey who ruled stadiums and radio with their classic rock standards like Don't Stop Believin', Faithfully, Lights and Open Arms.

Johnathan Cain actually really respected Perry. He valued Steve’s opinion’s and loved collaborating with him. I’m not sure where you got the impression Perry’s influence and success grated on Jon Cain. In fact, when Neil didn’t like Jon’s songs, and didn’t want them played… it was Perry that said “yes let’s do it” and shot Cain’s songs to the stratosphere! Cain’s success with Journey has everything to do with Steve’s support.

Looking at the shot of the radio chart and all those songs brings me back. Lol. What a great time of music. What I miss most is that music was an event….an event waiting for a new release that you had to go out to store and buy and bring home…an event to go see bands when they came into town and you didn’t have cell phones or RU-vid where you could see the show beforehand. Bands were larger than life and an even bigger part of yours. Today it’s all instant access and none of the event or anticipation or total enjoyment. Yeah I’m old. But I got to enjoy the magic of that time. Priceless.

Perry left not because Journey necessarily fired him but rather he delayed touring because of a hip injury which was gonna need surgery, the only problem was it would delay the band. But after a few years the band finally parted ways with Steve Perry saying, this is nothing against you, but we’re moving on. I mean Journey came back just about 10 years after their disappearance. Ansley Dunbar and Steve Smith had a lot to do with my drumming in my teens. That was like one of those pallets that really taught me how to play a ballad and like play it at a nice slow m but don't drag it out. I'm not sure what to say because this is one of the coldest motherfuking guitarist in rock and roll. Remember kids this cat played at Woodstock when he was 15 years old!!!!
