I think no two games work together better. Random tables just each feel more like their authors style, but SO much is just instantly portable.

This validates my approach! I started using ICRPG during the Kickstarter due Shadowdark and have been supplementing ICRPG with SD the whole campaign. Travel rules, magic item generation, and easy regional encounter tables have been supremely helping. I’ve also pulled in the morale (straightD15 check at half monster hp) and lighting systems(1 hour lighting). So much of this is almost system neutral and it has been a breeze!

I agree COMPLETELY that merging these two would make my best and fastest game. Kelsey and Hankerin collaborate Im sure you know. His name is in the Shadowdark book. I also intend to use just the ability modifiers from ICRPG. Im tired of trying to explain the difference to new players. I will probably also use room targets fro most rooms except maybe a final boss room.

Good move on the modifiers. I like the roll 3d6 approach because I think it’s fun, but the straight modifiers is just so easy.

I just happened across your video today, subbing because we are clearly like minded. I have been running icrpg for a while and when I got my hands on shadowdark a couple months ago I immediately started blending the two. The result is a lightning fast icrpg style game with the gritty feel and desperate atmosphere of the ole OSR scene. It's the smoothest running grimdark experience I have ever underwent and my players are eating it up!

Very cool. I didn’t realize it was printed in a slick compact A5 sized book. I missed the kickstarter, so I have to wait a few months for the crowdfunding fulfillment before they start selling the extra copies as regular stock (according to Kelsey’s December update)

Yeah, it is a really nice size. Needs to be broken in though. Hopefully the fulfillment doesn’t take too long.

I have Shadow Dark PDF on my phone and the Book is coming soon. So far I love how it's very easy to understand. I don't have ICRPG. I'll check it out.

My currents thoughts are that shadowdark is a great base that you can add stuff on to from icrpg, like giving your fighter an extra ability for completing a milestone. im gonna be trying it out the the expanded doomvault!

If i don't understand bad, target is the general difficulty of the scene so every action is more easy to succed in an easy scene. In shadowdark, maybe the inherent thought is that magic is difficult per se. So you add the tier difficulty. I think you got something there... Actually i am reading icrpg to try a solo game, but i find magic... A bit weird, though the pool point system in advance magic seems interesting... Maybe just a tweak if you want magic to be weird because it is costly would be good. Ok. Didn't wanna do a wallpost. TLDR. Interesting approach.

My box arrives tomorrow. I'm excited to do as you said and blend some of my fave ICRPG ideas with it. I like a more heroic game than the Shadowdark base rules allow so I'll be hacking it a bit to make adventurers worth getting excited about. I wish there was a more fleshed out and version of the ICRPG rules some day.

Great video! I love ICRPG. I once ran a one shot of 5e for my friends, but I was really using ICRPG rules. They had fun but had no idea what I done. It's a great 5e alternative. I also have the Shadowdark pdf. Looks awesome! I will probably buy the physical book too.

Same! I remember playing in a really intense Waste is Not Kind game and only had 1 HP for most of the game. So much fun!

I’m still on the bubble in my assessment of the ultimate level of innovation, overall hobby value, and parameters for optimal use of ShadowDark, but your points about the system make for interesting consideration.

I really like your trick of giving creatures a "Max damage taken per successful hit" I feel like for player characters, DR is cool, but for monsters, the incoming damage is SO hard to gauge. A hit could be 3 damage, or it could be 39. It's nice to *know* that a creature can take at least 4 hits.

I know right? It’s a great little thing for tougher monsters. Very similar to the only takes one damage but only has 3 hp you see in the monster set mainframe.

My initial reaction to reading and running SD a while back is it's basically the ICRPG version of OSE. The same way ICRPG relates to 5e. I do like the lower power level of SD and overall it's a really slick game to run.

I don’t know a lot about OSE, but having looked through I do really think ICRPG and Shadowdark have a ton in common and feels really similar to each other. I also really like the lower power level vibes of SD. Love that kind of game.

@@KanesKiln OSE is already a bit simpler than 5e but it has some "historical debt" to it in terms of different mechanics for stuff like saves, abilities attacks etc. SD puts all this together and unifies it along the same principles ICRPG follows. the result is something very close to ICRPG with a little bit of old school proceduralism added to make it easier to play sandbox / location based scenarios compared to the more story based approach of icrpg

Definitely the new hotness right now in the community since everyone who supported the kickstarter just got their books. As for more videos showing compatible games, I’m not sure. I try really hard to stick to things I’m actually using because I never want to just recommend something because I’m supposed to. If I find something I’m using I’ll definitely consider talking about it.

Ahhh just no. Shadowdark does not need the ugly formatted ICRPG any more than you wanted your 10 years younger kid brother insisting on joining the game when you were a teen.
