Well maybe because where you live you don’t get black ice, you just get a lot of dry snow which doesn’t affect a vehicle nearly as bad as black ice. In places where winter weather is uncommon, ice storms are more likely to happen over snow storms.

@snowrocket
@snowrocket 7 лет назад
True, but the tires probably aren't right for ice (I mean it IS Alabama!), likely no weight in the bed, and the front diff is open, not a locker or limited slip. Actually, considering all that, I don't think he did too bad.

No tire is good for ice, if a road has zero traction changing tread doesn't change anything, only chains do because you can break the ice up.

Ditto! Ice is tough on all drivers f they do not have the correct tires on their autos and still some may need chains, cables, straps to assist in gaining traction Problem is people in general think they sneak by without any of these things and most do fail miserably. Here's The best part, If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare by buying ice rated tires for their autos! Priceless.
@NickRahn

lmao. holding the brakes make it worse. a sliding tire will get no traction. at least if the tires are rolling you still have some control.
@jeremyladue6496

Nick Rahn right? Idk how people don't see that, if they stay still they slide, if the tires rotate and you tap the brakes little at a time you'll eventually stop

If you drive on ice once every blue moon, how are you going to learn? They panic and that's the end of it, as most people do first time on ice. And of course have no tires for the condition and should have left the car at home.

wowitskevin here's what you do, when you're slipping on ice, you tap the brakes and steer it the direction of the slide, if you slam in the brake you'll just slide but tapping you'll eventually stop. Now goin down hill, your best bet is to hit a curb if there's any

That was scary to look at for me. I live in Indiana now, but I grew up in California's Central Valley, and it's the worst feeling losing control of your vehicle at the drop of a hat like that. Probably worse in the South than up here just because they don't have the same preparations at the ready to handle it because it's not as common. Needless to say, I sympathize with those drivers who have to brave those road conditions.

In these kind of conditions its really important to have proper tires in your car. Slush and undercooled water are the worst IMO. I have had more close calls with slush on the road, than with ice. I had too wide winter tires in my previous car and it was "always" on slushplaning.

Most of these are in my city. There are multiple reasons that so many of these people can’t drive in one of the snowiest weeks we’ve had. Reasons: 1.) It hit faster than expected. We were at school that morning, sent home early, then at around 3pm all roads were completely covered with snow. It kept snowing. And snowing. And snowing. 2.) More than expected. Normally we get 24-72 hours of snow on the ground, and maybe 12 hours of it actually falling. It’s normally spots of ice, and that’s it. This time, overnight, some of the snow melted and was refrozen into ice. Then, more snow fell. This was thicker/more ice than we’ve gotten in a long time. 3.) Ill-equipped. We have I think 1 snowplow for a 25 mile radius of hills and valleys. Plus, your every day joe, not the best with anything past normal conditions in the heat, is not going to know the first thing about driving his front wheel drive light sedan with summer tires (all season at best) on a hill that’s iced over. That’s a lot basically to say “we ain’t never seen dis much snow”

Chains is for scandinavians, for mountains. Just use winter tyres. And if you are slideing, dont block tyres by pressing brake. Make roll tyres and controll your car. Americans think they gut BIG truck/car ant they are kings of the road. They look like idiots with chains. Where i live we got ice/snow on roads ~3months a year. Even children know what to do. If you drive pick up you need some weight on back, or else you will look like american with chains on wheels.

I live in Chicago, but I was in Tn. for a death in the family. On my way back north, early in the morning darkness driving thru the "mountains", the highway was clear and dry until the little tributaries of meltwater that flowed onto the highway would saturate sections of it, and freeze due to it being February. Nothing like zipping along at 65, and hitting these random ice patches, truck starting to slide, and then right back to clean dry pavement.

Nope just as long as you have enough grip to start moving. Had a friend in NJ they closed schools and virtually all non essential business over reports of snow the next day. If you start sliding first thing is hold the steering wheel tightly and slowly brake this makes the wheels have more traction, it worked for me 3 weeks ago

These conditions only come once every 3-5 years, so buying vehicles to distribute salt would sit more than they would be operated.

How about a mutual aid agreement from another state to use their equipment? Utility companies move hundreds of vehicles and thousand of workers to areas needing additional aid. I guess it's still about cost.

If folks want to go ice skating they buy ice skates, right? Yet when they go driving on ice they do not prepare their cars by buying ice rated tires and or chains! Priceless.

Yes, but in the southern USA, snow/ice is so rare that it's not worth buying them. Better to just stay put for a day.

I’m late, but I’m from Mobile, AL and am going to college in Birmingham, AL, the city featured here. Mobile gets any wintery weather once every 3 years and birmingham gets an inch of snow on average per year. It is February and I have yet to see a flurry. We have *absolutely* no idea how to drive on ice. Laugh all you want, it is funny ill give you that, but no matter how much wisdom you give us from driving on snow all your life we will not budge. This is because if you spend 5 months out of every year driving on snow or ice, you get pretty used to it. You know how to react instinctually, because driving is an instinctual course of action that you build up over time. Well, when you drive in these conditions once every 10 years, you don’t exactly develop the instincts for it. When your car is sliding, you do what is intuitive, not what someone told you 5 years ago on a youtube comment section that one time. And what is intuitive to us is to try to correct our course of motion, because that is what works in non-icy conditions. We end up being equivalent in skill to a 16 year old who has been driving for two weeks. Also, the roads aren’t salted, we don’t have that stuff here.

A Madison County sheriff deputy was rather rude to me during that storm. It was night, he was sliding wildly, and there was a long steep downhill just ahead, so we (wife & myself) decided to follow a bit just in case he got into trouble. I have a 4x4 truck with excellent tires, a winch, tow ropes, traction devices, first aid gear, and so on. He suddenly stopped, turned on his overheads, walked back to my truck, and started yelling about me tailgating, him writing me a ticket, and more. I was well behind (he had a good walk), we were only going about 5mph, and I had no problem stopping when he did (he was sliding, not me). I waited a few minutes at the bottom of the hill, but he never showed up. Don't know if he turned around or ended up off the road down a cliff. I didn't go back to look.
