This is Part 2 of our IDBDR Adventure. Dealing with bad weather and closed sections, we were just too early in the season to complete the northern portion of the IDBDR. But, with so much beautiful scenery and open space to explore, it was anything but a bust. The best part is we get to try all over again!

Guys- really nice job on the videos. The boys and I have done four BDRs and looking to do the Idaho route in 2023. Looks like we better wait until July to avoid the snow. Thanks for sharing your ride!

Thanks Bill! To be honest, we’re going to try again as well! This will be our fourth attempt! (I didn’t film our third attempt, but it was met by a broken clutch cable deep in the backcountry-and of course no spare) Honestly, I think the best time is fall if your schedule allows. Cheers!

I hope so too. Really ready for summer to be here and the Covid lockdown to lighten up. Thanks for the compliment! 2021 should be a better year and hopefully I can post a few more and that they get a little better each time.

Pint & A Half! I just found out you’re friends with Lynda and David Bacon! Such a small world! Lynda and I went to HS together! It was really good meeting you both! Your sticker is on the back of my bike! Hope you are okay with us using your music.... tried to credit you-not sure if I did it right. 😃

@@johnhgarrett Wow! Yes, it's an incredibly small world, especially when you start combining the spheres of music and motorcycling. Hope we run into you again. We may not be back to Burgdorf; looks like they may stop having music. Such a beautiful place, but much of the surrounding forest burned last summer.

Thanks for sharing your adventure. Riding off-road requires you to be flexible, since unpaved roads and tracks may not be clear or passable. Appreciate your attitude through it all and that you'll tackle it again.

Thank you for commenting. Absolutely, flexibility is so important. Not disappointed we didn’t make it-I know we will. It’s fun trying. Really glad you enjoyed this! John Garrett

Just found and watched both your videos. Great job. Looks like a trip to do one day. I’m from southern Alberta so not that far away for me. But first riding to Tuktoyuktuk next June. Taking in the D2D in Dawson at same time.

Want2Ride.... Thank you! It was an incredible ride that I’m obviously still waiting to complete myself! Lol. Too funny... I was in Dawson in 2014 after the D2D. We donated some tires while there to support somebody else that might come behind us and need them, and in return we each got a 2014 D2D t-Shirt. So I have the shirt but technically didn’t do it! Ha! It’s on the bucket list! I do have a 60 second video called the End of the Ride about going to Dawson. It’s short but kind of fun! Let me know if you ever make it this way! Would love to show you the area! Take care, John

Really glad you enjoyed it! You guys will have a great time. And we did the first half, well the first quarter, in May 2018. We did the second portion in June 2018. If you are looking to do it in a. Single ride, you should probably wait until mid July, to make sure all the passes are open and trails are clear. Be prepared for downed trees, washouts, and a few snow fields when you go, unless later in the year. I hope you get it done! I feel like I’ve traveled virtually all of the BDR, but I haven’t been able to string it together into a single ride! Maybe this year….but we are already thinking about heading north if the borders are open. I am really looking forward to riding this season! Cheers!

Well im sure by now you figured out that you want the wrong time of year. Never cross that area before july 15th. Thats when they go out and clear it. Elk summit Was still snowed over on july 13th last yr. Lucky I went a couples days after it was cleared. Sunny 85 to 100 degree days every day of my ride. Solo top to bottom.

I just checked out your channel! Def going to watch them all! I bet it was a great experience going solo. I always like riding with a buddy....just in case! And yes, will try again. Actually tried in 2020 to finish the BDR--I didn't film much, but I lost a clutch cable 1 day out. Limped home and didn't go out again.

Had to watch your video again! Where did you guys camp 40 miles south of Clark Fork?
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett 2 года назад
Hi Mark, We camped south of the Magee Creek Ranger Camp near the turnoff to SpyGlass Peak. It was a primitive camp site on a creek. Guessing about 5 miles below the Magee Creek Ranger Camp. As we were getting ready for bed at dusk, all hell seemed to break loose in the creek bed with tree limbs snapping and water splashing---it was a young moose frolicking up and down the creek bed! Too fun! Are you planning a trip? Or have you already done the BDR?

Doing this and WABDR leaving from Vancouver Island this August. Quick question for the hive mind, what's the deal with spark arrestors in the states? Are you stopped and checked for them? I've never ever had one on any bike but pre pre pre trip paranoia is setting in. Bikes a KTM 1090R with an akropovic can, stock CAT and headers. Cheers fella, great video!
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett 2 года назад
Great question, and I’m not sure I can answer it from an official perspective, but I personally won’t venture into the desert or backcountry without a spark arresting muffler. Years of drought have left everything so dry it’s easy for a vehicle to start a fire. I don’t want the liability. However, no clue if they would stop you to check if you’re compliant. Law enforcement isn’t limited to just police officers, it could also be Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) officers which are most likely to be.who you might come across in the backcountry. The WABDR is on my list as well. But, the grass is always greener on the other side, right? Lol! We are thinking of headed to your side of the fence! I love BC and might do the ALCAN again. My bro wants to do the Dust to Dawson this year but I don’t think I can break early enough to make that happen. Best of luck with your trip!

@@johnhgarrett Thanks for the reply. Yeah I figured its better safe than sorry, Did the alaska last year and looped back to prince rupert on the cassiar, ferry back to the island from there, was a nice loop.
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett 2 года назад
We returned via the Cassiar as well. So beautiful. I wish I could remember our full route across BC when we turned back toward Idaho as there were some really great towns we visited along the way. We got into some torrential rains on this return leg so our ability to explore and soak up local vibes was usurped by wetness and a real desire to get to dryer conditions. Ugh. The ferry might have been more pleasant. Thanks for the note-always enjoy talking with fellow riders-and best of luck with the BDR’s this summer. Got another video in the works from last years ride as well. Hope to post soon. Cheers!

So I have been watching several of these Idaho BDR videos when is the best time to go? July or August?
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett 4 года назад
klh3244, great question. Perhaps others might have a different opinion, but to have confidence that you won’t have closures, likely no earlier than mid-July. The problem then is that the lower elevations -especially the southern section is blastedly hot-so it’s a bit uncomfortable. When we go again, we are planning later in the season-perhaps September.

Late August into September is a great time of year. 95% of the obstacles they encountered are cleared up by then. We even had the same bridge outage at 3:20 back in 2016 but other riders had blazed a trail through it. Mid June is waaaay too early.
