Ideal icos boiler service. Today we're going to do a service on a Ideal icos open vent heat only boiler.
It also has a HF Fault. Say Fault on Ideal Isar. NO HOT WATER, NO CENTRAL HEATING.
This boiler's also got a HF fault, or an FH fault alternate. On the display it goes FH or HF. Whichever way around. And that's normally, it could be PCB, it could be circuit board. Instructions say it could be circuit board, and it shows you how you can test for that. But it's normally electrodes. And we're going to change the electrodes on this job anyway. I think boiler's about 13 or 14 years old. So it's about time to have the electrodes done.
We're going to strip this down and we're going to do a full service on it. If you're going to take a case off a boiler you must be Gas Safe registered and competent to do so. We've also done... There's electrical checks on this, and they are...
They are?
What do I need to do?
Oh! Okay. So we need to turn the boiler off at the spur, and take the fuse out, keep that on you.
We did a video, didn't we, on safe isolation?
Yeah.
But what we're doing with this case now, with this magic pen?
Checking if it's still-
PUP. What's PUP mean?
PUP. PUP means is prove, use, and prove.
So we're proving the pen works. We're going to use the pen. And then we would prove the pen again. And that's just a Fluke voltalert.
We just got a couple of screws underneath here to take this front cover off. And then this front cover just lifts off. And it's the Ideal icos HE 18 kilowatt open vent boiler, or heat only boiler.
So Richard's just removing four screws. Two on the bottom. Two on the top. And then we're just going to take that front cover off. We've also got some bits for this. So we've got the electrode kit and then we've got the electrode flamesensing. And we've also got a new condensate trap because the other one is blocked. It's blocked there but we'll talk about that soon.
We've got a problem with this boiler. This boiler's gurgling. And if we take these screws out of the bottom here water will come out of here because this pipe underneath... here, that pipe... is blocked. So we need to try and clear that blockage. But once we've done that, I'll show you inside here. And we're also going to change these as well.
Always read the installation and servicing instructions. And in there it'll tell you exactly what you need to do. So we're just going to take out this screw here. I'm going to take off that pipe there. There's also some leads that needs unplugging on there. Careful with that. Just check all the seals. Replace, if needed. We've then got some screws, or bolts, or nuts at back. Three. And then three screws at front. These ones. Just that there.
And that's your burner. Just be careful with that. And if we have a look inside there. Look at all that. So that's the old probe there. I'm just going to change that one. So it's all stripped down now and we've changed the electrodes. If this was the combi, so if this was the isar, there would be a little valve in there. I'll just show you. There'd be a Schrader valve in the back of there and you'd pump the expansion vessel up as well. Drain the boiler. Pump the expansion vessel up. On this one it's got a remote expansion vessel there. So, what we're going to do, we're going to drain it down and we're going to pump that one up instead. And just check it.
Just going to remove these screws now and take this front cover off. We just need to clean inside there. If you can see in there, we've still got a puddle of water in there. And as I say this were full of water. I've also got some new pins because the one in the boiler snapped. So I've got some new pins as well. They're in now. I have washed that through a bit, but we need to wash it a bit more. And as I always say, this should only be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer or somebody who is competent to do so. We will be testing this with all the testing equipment. We've got a flue gas analyzer and we'll be testing this. So please, please do not DIY with gas. It's just not worth it for the sake of how much it cost to get somebody who can do a good job for you. But it's very important to get it serviced. So if you've got one of these boilers then please give your local gas engineer a call and get them to come and do your service.
Just put the burner back on there. We've still got the condensate trap to take out. We're going to do that last. And then we're just going to put the fan back in now. Just need to nip that back up and also tighten the fan back in. We've put all the leads back on. And I still need to do that trap underneath here.
We're just going to put front cover back on now. And then that pipe up top there is where we need to check this. So that pipe on the top is where we check this one with the flue gas analyzer. So yeah.

Everyone is quick to slag off the ideal isar but I’ve seen a few go 10 +years without any trouble at all Just goes to show the importance of PROPER servicing, not just do a quick FGA then p...s off !!!! I looked at an ideal logic today,serviced every year for seven years and believe it or not I was the first to remove the burner assembly and flush out the heat exchanger!! , u won’t believe the crap that came out! Sounded a lot quieter afterwards
@hdhanji8006
@hdhanji8006 4 года назад
Agreed, the problem rests with customers not wanting to pay the right amount for a proper service and engineers resorting to probe and go jobs which brings down standards in the industry. Manufacturers partly to blame too for allowing fga readings to mitigate a strip down service - as we all probably know, a ratio of 0.004 is still too high and will read much lower if serviced properly

Can I add my penny’s worth , about gas boilers . ideal concord 37 years old so time to change ! waiting for free swop never came (OAP but no benefits ) then last year son in law stripping flats offered me a 2/3 looks like new vaillant ecotec 38. so didn’t choose it ! stripped fitted an certified , so seen all inside , and well I’m impressed the insides look far far superior to any Allen worked on in pics , well placed good fittings an well only small criticism is rather tight fitting an hard to remove water filter BUT. If that’s the only complaint it’s a damn good piece of kit . Now one point I live in a soft water area an don’t suffer the hard water problems Allen shows a lot , at new it was teamed with a magnaclean so that’s there as well , not bad for £50 lol . So a totally unbiased non expert or plumber review of the best boiler on the market .

Hi Allen. Thanks for the video and the time and effort you put into this channel. After replacing the fan I LDF the gas connection to the fan and run the boiler to check for gas soundness before replacing the inner cover as this gas connection is disturbed during the service. On one occasion the rubber grommet in this connection, which is visible in your video, fell out so LDFing this connection afterwards reassures me the grommet is still there and seated correctly. Obviously a tightness test would be of no use as this gas connection is north of the gas valve. Just wondering if and how you check this.

We have a local authority who mostly had Ideal Turbo 2 boilers, that we replaced with these. Not sure which was worse. I had an Ideal Minimiser for about 8 years. Another poorly thought out boiler. Impossible to clean properly (believe me, I tried!). The burner is upside down. If they’d turned it upside down it might have worked ok. But the oxide used to pile up around the electrodes and make it fail. That gravity stuffs’ a bit of a bu**er!

Nice to see full strip down, unfortunately, many local authorities and private customers are not prepare to pay for the extra time needed to do such a professional job sad but true. Money, profits, determine how long one can spend on each job. It's a piety but there lot of truth in it. Most companies allow only 1 hour for a service. We your draining down and repressureizing expansion vessel, depending on system some times that can take time on its own.

Always get a qualified engineers to fix/service boilers but i can see why people resort to diy. Some really bad gas men out there giving the trade a bad name. First time I have seen a heat only boiler but the combi versions were possible the worst boiler ever . I worked on them a lot , cramped to work on luminium heat exchanger that leaked from 5 years onwards an absolute money pit . That trap was so shallow as well The retaining pin design was changed to the type you fitted by a manufacturer visit as I believe there was a problem with the insulation panels falling down . As a general rule not worth bothering fixing and I used to fully strip and clean them every year .A disaster for Ideal that tarnished their brand for years.

When I open the casing, there are lot of corrosion, rusty and has been leaking for only God knows. It was so compact that you cant even get your hands around the components. Why would anyone installed this type of boiler in a tiny cupboard. I quickly put the casing back and zoom off. I would not touch that on Friday afternoon
@frenchfrench4514
@frenchfrench4514 4 года назад
Scrap the boiler or walk away. You can leave this boiler thinking its safe and then the next day the burner box/heat engine gasket/seal (top or bottom)will fail and it will be leaking products of combustion the day after you think you've left it safe. There's no way of knowing when this seal will fail and you can't inspect it or change it, its put together in the factory and is hidden (especially the bottom one) and corrodes from the inside out I worked for Ideal for 4 years, I've condemned 100s of these boilers. That would be my advice anyway, this boiler can get you into trouble or give you a bad name.

@@victor-hn1bh Yes, i used to put the probe around the orange seals and if I detected anything the boiler would be condemned. A good way to tell is immediately check the inside of the inner case to see if it is stained anywhere, if it is then the boiler is leaking fumes usually. I dont not work on these boilers now though, I only worked on them because I worked for Ideal, I wouldn't go near them now privately unless I was taking it off the wall.
