Contrary to what is presented in the video, my intention is NOT to deconstruct this radio, but instead fix it up and pass it on to a new ham who mat be struggling to get onto the HF bands. I'll keep searching for another suitable radio to deconstruct.

It's the least can do Dave. I'm in a lucky position that I can just buy stuff to play around with. I wonder if I should put out a video series? It would again be the world according to me (right or wrong)!

Hey Mr. Morris, I'm loving all your videos, they are quite addicting. I am very interested in getting started in building my own transceiver myself. I'd love to hear your thoughts on where I should start. My electrical knowledge is slowly building, but I'd love to know where you get your knowledge on building the different components and how you go about combining them all together! I would LOVE to see some HOW TO videos on basics of building the various components with open ended solutions so us newbies can modify and learn with you! Thanks again for all your videos!

I have a TS130 that has a CW issue. I tracked it down to the Mic/Car pot. The Car portion seems to be solid but wiggling the Mic will cause CW power to come and go. Haven't tore into it yet. I also found the band switch to be intermittent at times. I like the idea of replacing the VFO. The 120/130 series vfo does drift a bit. Cheers...

That radio is a bucket of crap - I love it :-) What I normally do when I come across these tired old things is fix them up , then given them away to Hams that are struggling financially.

That's a really good point Greg. You know I might-will do the same. While I don't know of any around here, I'm sure they are out there. I'll fix it up and reach out to the local ham club. Thanks again for the steer.

Sure thing Neil. For now it's a half wave dipole using twin-flex cable. The cable come into the shack and into a tuner (via the balanced wire output).

Thanks for the video! It's a pitty they don't make radios like this anymore. One thing I don't quite understand though - does this radio has only one crystal filter? How did people operate back in the day if they were interested in both CW and SSB? 73 de R2AUK
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM 4 года назад
Hi Aleksander. I see the radio does have the ability to have a narrow bandwidth CW filter installed. Without it, you have to use the wider the SSB filter, which will make it harder to tune into closely spaced CW signals.

It's personal preference. IMHO it's e-waste. I would pass it onto an experienced Kenwood restorer. Pulling it apart and making it spread eagle on a board is a nightmare. Nothing will pull apart and re-mount easily. All the mechanics will be worn or worn out. Then you won't b e able to get it all back as it was. But that's just me, I have no energy for work like this 😫 Good luck with what you decide Charlie!!!

Thanks Paul. I'm still looking for another doner. As pulling it apart, for me that's part of the enjoyment. Either get the old hardware to work or graft something else in. All good fun.

Was wondering. I wanna see the wafer switch for the P.A. Can do a video? The old Kenwood rigs as such with that big band switch are good for dirty and/or melting. Can slip as well. Also would like to see if the P.A. is blown, pop the covers please. Get on internet, schematic gotta be somewhere. Restore a TS-530 here and had to remove it, clean it, and solder each rivet(clue there, loose rivets holding contacts, and squeezing them won't work). Love the VFO replacement idea. Need an amp for the output of an si5351 I think to match output of VFO. Love it don't stop.

Thanks John. Slight change of plans. I might have to look around for a more suitable doner for the original idea.
@johncundiss9098

@@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM Understand that. Older Kenwoods at least, they seem to like take a chassis, solder a board in the middle of it then start soldering other boards to it and building it around it. Making it impossible to service the darn thing. It would be cool to have the band pass filters on that big open wafer switch but you are probably right. Splitting it up not be easy. If anything be sure to check the P.A. parts and such to keep for spares. P.S. I have actually followed some of your ideas with bandscope on my Kenwood ts-940s. IF port though, it no work and never knew it, I mean I get nothing even with the preamp turned on the spectrum analyzer. Next Digikey order get some good op amps and make a buffer circuit for other radios. I mad at the Kenwood right now. LOL. 73's and I am watching.

I'm sorry Greg. I'm not sure. If you have test equipment, try diving the circuit in half and looking at the signal before the crystal filter. That way you should be able to narrow down where the problem may be.
