Unless you do a lot of radio work, you can do the same job with a SDR. But...a real spectrum analyzer will show you things that a SDR can't. For instance...a few years ago I noticed that I wasn't hearing any VHF high band stations on my scanner. The scanner's S meter was full scale and the SDR showed an unusually high noise floor. I experimented with antennas and even bought a new scanner, to no avail. The SDR pointed to a local FM radio station on 96.9. Before firing off a missive to the station I tested it with a spectrum analyzer and the station wasn't "dirty". The fix was a FM band filter. Testing it with the spectrum analyzer showed that it was a brick wall to the 96.9 signal.

They are a great machine. I note yours has a bit of the black dust on the screen. Typical of what you get with high voltage CRTs, you can pull the front screen cover off but just watch the fine mesh. Mine had that and a good clean made all the difference. The normalising function in the tracking gen is great to take out coax losses / impedance bumps if you have a bit of a coax run to the DUT.

That is a super nice service monitor! The spectrum analyzer & tracking generator will be nice for tuning duplexers. I have my eye on a Motorola (General Dynamics) R2670A, but my wallet is not quite ready for it!

That's a great pickup there Hayden - they're not easy to find. A few years ago I rescued an as new & clean HP 8594E SpecAn (to 2.9GHz) with many options including tracking gen that was days away from heading to the skip bin. Someone at work thought it was an old professional TV with lots of buttons. My win 🙂

Some of those features you showed are options such as the tone decoding and the spectrum analyzer and aren't in every 8920A.

Did I miss the price? or is that aspect of info persona non grata.. Could be interresting to sense what that unit flipped for with those options in a far away region like Australia. but atleast it smaller then HP8924C.

Why are you worried about FCC regs Hayden? Not so relevant in sunny VK7 ;) Nice set I like the high input I always stress about blowing up inputs after a nasty scope episode many years ago while demonstrating at a UK high school open day…..

The nice thing about the 8921 is they are by default fully loaded. I love mine. It’s a regular Swiss Army knife.

Not really. You find them come up every now and then for cheap. A HP8924C should set you back $500-$1000 depending on the condition. That's the cost of a new mobile radio these days. Plus the benefits last for years, I've paid this thing of multiple times already in how handy it has been.

Not really, look how many hams are spending more $$ on flashy rigs like the IC-7610. Gear like this is less expensive and way more interesting to own.
