Ideas Have Consequences: The Philosophers Who Shaped 2020

Friends, I recently addressed the Knights of Malta about this convulsive time in our national history, demonstrated by the global pandemic, unstable politics, and outbursts of violence. But not many people understand the ideologies that stand behind the rioting and deep unrest that we see on our city streets. What I do in this brief presentation is to step back a bit from current events and explore four thinkers who have had a profound impact in shaping the world that we are confronting: Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Michel Foucault. Once we understand some of their most basic ideas, we will recognize their influence everywhere today.

I am Muslim but I see you have a lot of wisdom in your words and teachings. No wonder a lot of people admire you. They should. I first know you from your interview with Peterson it was an epic one. Keep up. You educate millions of people with your knowledge and I think you are very good ambassador of your religion.

Bishop, I’ve watched a lot of your videos over the last six months since my reversion to theism, and I really do think this might be your best video yet. I doubt you’re scanning comments on your videos, especially ones from three months ago, but man. My recommendation is that we need more of these! We live in such a philosophically devoid culture nowadays. I think lectures like this are the key to showing agnostics on the fence that the Church has its own heavy philosophical merits that the modern world seems to have forgotten.

I too have watched a myriad of Bishop Barron’s sermons and presentations and agree this is one of the best I’ve seen. Understanding this was delivered a few years ago, at the end he suggests that the Knights of Malta invite him back to expand on the conclusory comments as to how the church sits athwart the the philosophical basis and footing of each of the four philosophies. Does anyone know whether that invitation has been actioned and if so have a link to that presentation? Thanks.

I was driven to these philosophers in the 90’s as a reaction to the brutal algorithms of a manipulative “Christian” environment. The “truths” that resonated so strongly with my experience drove me to anger, despondency, and suicidal adaptations. But I’ve never fully appreciated the miraculous effects of His grace in my life and how I engage now with the heavy fruit of existential chaos until you gave this summation so beautifully. I am deeply grateful. My prayers are with you. 🙏

@@thecarlitosshow7687 I was referring the Nietzschean (and other) underpinnings that permeate much of the modern self-help philosophy: The idea that man is his own god and can do whatever he wants, even heal himself, without any answering or need for a higher power. Alanon states the wholesome need for a Higher Power from whom to seek help and encouragement.
@magicpotion8
@magicpotion8 2 года назад
@@billspear1920 That was my experience. I tried self-help/personal development for years and I only became more neurotic, more judgemental, more self-critical and ultimately more inauthentic to my true self... By trying to "help" myself, I just ended up reinforcing the idea that I was "bad" or "worthless", which then lead me to try even harder to help myself out and it became a vicious cycle. Self-help is like the story of Sisyphus - a constant battle where one tries to consciously fight against some part of their unconscious nature. This only causes a schism within oneself. Eventually I just decided to accept myself instead of trying to change and paradoxically, that brought about the biggest change of all. This is what surrendering to God is all about.

You are most likely better versed in this topic and were quick to let us know.
@riseaslarks
@riseaslarks 3 года назад
@@tobysaalfeld787 Toby, I really do appreciate your comment--and I apologize if my remarks came off as condescending. You are absolutely right about the need for accessible introductions to important thinkers. That's some of the profound value I have found in Barron's videos too. I guess I just felt really discouraged because Barron is, in my view, usually much better at applying Newman's idea of the "power of assimilation"--the notion that Catholicism is intellectually robust enough to take in truth wherever it is found. It just seems to me that there is quite a lot of really powerful truth to be found in Marx, Nietzsche, and Foucault even though there is so much that needs to be sifted out and rejected. To tell you the truth, the power of assimilation is--along with the Eucharist, of course--the main factor that is drawing me to Catholicism. So, I think that's why I felt so disappointed with this particular video. Again, though, I am really so sorry if I came off as condescending--that's not all what I was aiming for. I know it's strange in an online forum, but let me ask for your forgiveness. Also, if I may--and I don't want this to make it sound like I am a know-it-all--but I really would recommend James K A Smith (this book especially: www.amazon.com/James-K-Smith-Postmodernism-Postmodern/dp/B00HTJR5ZI) if you are looking for a more evenhanded, yet still deeply Christian/catholic, introduction to some of these ideas. Thanks again for your comment.

riseaslarks What an articulate and sincere apology. I forgive you and I sorry I scolded you. I welcome your ideas on the video. I think that if he follows this with the Churches response, he may fill out what you found lacking. Thank you also for sharing the book. I will add it to my list. Most of what I read are the spiritual books. Books like: Abandonment to Divine Providence, by Jean- Pierre De Caussade, In the School of the Holy Spirit by Jacques Philippe, Heaven Starts Now, by Fr. John Riccardo. Prayer Primer by Father Thomas Dubay I don’t want to forget one that has been a challenge for me to “get”. Fr James Schall, Reasonable Pleasures: The Strange Coherences of Catholicism. I applaud your eagerness and never want to dampen that spirit in someone who is drawn to Catholicism. Those who choose to come into the church are so fervent and ignite those of us who are cradle Catholics. Thank you again for your kind response. Toby Saaalfeld. PS. My challenge today, was to find my way back to the comment to post my response. As a 73 year old I am considered “Techy” by my grandchildren, but some days I think they are just being kind.

This is the most profound thing I've heard in a long time, maybe ever. The philosophers I know pretty well. The word of God I feel I know very little of, but I am learning. What has drawn me to Christianity is that I've discovered, to my own asontishment, is that it simply seems to be ... true. From my own experience of life. It offers a path that actually works! It is in harmony with reality, unlike so many other ideas we are sold. Is there a "full response" available addressing this specifically from the Catholic perspective? He alluded to doing it at the end.

The reason Christianity seems to be true, at least in its moral teachings, and in harmony with the natural order is because Christ is the Logos, the very mind of God that imbued creation with its intelligible structure. He is truth, goodness, beauty, order, harmony because all those things have their source in Him and flow forth eternally from Him. While he did not go into the specific rights and wrongs of the thinkers, I believe his critiques are justified with regard to the negative impact many of them have had. He has more recently given a somewhat charitable presentation of post modernism with its ups and downs. And he has other videos pertaining to Marx. This presentation was a fair one, even if you disagree with some of his conclusions. We need to all better understand the philosophical underpinnings and justifications of people’s world views, so as I said, this is one of his most important videos.

@@mrquestion72 Why the name calling? I think one of Bishop Barron's most recent videos spoke about the importance of civility in online exchanges especially. And I think you are absolutely right to ask for argument instead of simple assertion--that is another problem with online exchanges. It's inconvenient how RU-vid splits up posts across a thread, but I try to flesh out more of my reservations with this video in my other comments. I don't mean to send you on a rabbit-trail down this increasingly long thread, but more of my arguments are there. Again, I really am not trying to troll. I love Bishop Barron and have learned a ton from him. That's actually why I felt disappointed by this video--I came to it really wanting a serious engagement with these thinkers (again, minus Sartre), and most of what I heard was a fairly basic dismissal of their moral relativism or their godlessness. These statements may be true in the most simplistic way, but that doesn't really capture where the insight of these thinkers resides--again, as I mention in one of my other comments, we need the power of assimilation here.

👏👏👏👏👏 I would definitely add Derrida and deconstruction for a better understanding of what's going on with the language. In a nutshell, all "constructs" are viewed through pairs of oppositions: right/wrong, man/woman, nature/culture etc. In all "binary oppositions" one member of the opposition is dominant, so there's always a power-based relationship between them. We must point out these binary oppositions, destroy them and construct new concepts (deconstruction = destruction + construction). I would say that once you apply that principle to right and wrong, you get moral relativism. After that, anything goes. Just look at what's happening with sex and gender. What they're doing to the "binary opposition" of man/woman shows you how deconstruction works in praxis.

Beautiful! Bishop this may be one of the most important videos on the web today! How did we get here as a culture? Finally a coherent and balanced presentation that names the source of our current conflict. Love the highlight that philosophy cannot be dismissed as abstract nonsense. It really does shape the culture we live in for better or worse. Please please please follow up with with the opposition to these modern and postmodern philosophies of darkness. More than ever the light of Christ's shareable body needs to be held high as the unifying True narrative. Through faith, supported by reason, all can find their true identity in the God man who actually is Justice and because he is Justice, he truly Knows the How to our Need. There is the Man, Jesus Christ, the God man whom we can follow. I pray you be filled with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit for your follow up. The Church needs philosophy! Otherwise Faith and Christ can be dismissed as just another narrative. Narrative it seems to us moderns but close Philosophical examination of the scriptures reveals that this God man satisfies all that lacks in the human being. Ancient and Medieval Philosophy presents the problems of the body politic and what would be necessary for true change for the better. But they admit they do not know what justice or wisdom is. Christ is the Way the Truth and the Life. He reveals that he knows the way and is the way because he is the God man. Only a God (capital G) knows how to solve the problems, for God is Being and knows all things at all times and all places. Gods command has true authority through Knowledge. It is only through faith does the individual have access to the real answer in Christ. Why faith? Perhaps, because if we had certainly of Gods existence we would love out of obligation not desire. We would be slaves not beloved children. Thank you Bishop for bringing the church an education on the forces at work in our modern culture!!!

@@JamesRichardWiley The very core of the issue is definitely the dogma. No doubt when you call that into question the house of cards begins to fall. Very simply the question is: did Christ give Peter the keys to heaven? Then follows the question of apostolic succession. If that alone is doubted, then one is likely to become an apostate. However, does one layman really think they're somehow more comprehending of the entirety of Christianity? Can just one person really make the presumption that they really are somehow divinely qualified all by themself? I can appreciate the rugged determination of western individualism. It's often lauded as a trait that any authentic person would have. Perhaps it's great in the secular world. Yet I doubt any one of us has the wisdom of the Saints and the Church collectively throughout history. There is one important point. Your thoughts and desire to know the truth would be such a great addition to all of the others in the Catholic Church. People who question and dig deep are just what the Church needs. Christians aren't a scattered group of lone sheep, rather they are meant to be together making contributions in some way. After all, those in Heaven are probably on the same page. Of course there are some rough spots in the history, but this doesn't reflect on the truth of our faith.

Thank you, thank you, Bishop Baron! Very relevant and cutting to the core of issues. I grew up under communist oppression in Eastern Europe - not fun at all! I just wish that all the people in US today who are putting Marx/Lenin/socialist ideas on high pedestals would be all taken as a group and relocated in a communist country (Cuba, North Korea. China maybe…) . So they can experience on their own what truly is to live under socialism/communism, where you don’t own anything and none of your efforts matter and no innovative ideas are allowed because you are not aligned with the equal uniformity imposed by those governments. And of course socialists/communists would frown upon God/religion because God/religion is the very core of true freedom, love, unity and collaboration among people. They definitely don’t like that! Rather the socialist/communists prefer to instill fear, suspicion, division, hate and desperation in people so people have nothing to look forward to and become desolate/placid slaves of the system…

What a perfect, perfect, perfect approach and explanation. Also, another thing: About words and language, I don't know if happens with other languages but there's something happening right now with spanish speaking countries: Spanish language has more complex conjugations on verbs, adjectives and substantives based on not only present, past, future, singular, plural but also gender. Male, female. So these extreme feminist waves (the new lefties) are demanding society to remove those gender conjugations to gender neutral words. The Royal Academy of the Spanish Language (RAE in spanish), thank God, has been against those demands and, obviously, the great majority of spanish speaking people are mocking these lefties. The end.
