My Notes: I wrote what he said in my own words, kinda. - Western European states were building maritime empires and sea-based empires, and the goal was to dominate Indian Ocean trade and colonize America. Europeans ignored old enlightenment ideas like how people were born with liberty and should govern themselves, but they had dominated people who didn't want to be dominated, and they took away their ability to govern themselves, like the U.S. and the Philippines. Before imperialism was moved by god, gold, and glory, but now it’s nationalism, scientific racism, social Darwinism, and civilizing missions. - Nationalism: a sense of commonality between people, typically based on shared language, religion, social curiosities, and typically self-rule. - Before everyone saw themselves as under sovereign, now their loyalties are more linked to their own people. - The unification of Italy and Germany was due to the nationalistic desires of the people. - Nationalistic impulses led imperial states to claim more land for more power. - Scientific Racism: The idea that humans are ranked highly in biological classes based on race. - Europeans had divided it between Christians and non-Christians before, but now it’s based on race, whites, and non-whites, and scientific racists tried showing how the white race is above all others, like in phrenology, which studied the shape and size of skulls; they said since white people’s skulls were bigger, they were more superior. This justified the white imperialism of “child races.” - Social Darwinism: Originally, biological Darwinism by Charles Darwin argued that species in existence evolved over long periods of time through natural selection; he argued species survived because they adapted; he was a social Darwinist and tried to see if this is how human societies developed; if only the fittest survive and thrive, then it means that western industrial societies are best suited since they have adapted, which makes them "better.” - Civilizing mission: a sense of Western industrial society to bring the lore of their civilization to lower societies. Believed they had a duty to all the “child races” under their care-paternalism. - They sent Christian missionaries. - They reopened the colonial government to Western ideals. - Imposed Western-style education. - Suppressed indigenous language and culture.
