Oh no! I just burnt parts of my lawn with fertilizer. In this video I show you what happened, how it happened, and what to do after fertilizer burn. A proper application of fertilizer should never burn your lawn but it can happen to any of us. Hopefully you'll be able to learn from my mistakes and keep this from happening to your lawn. Also I talk through the practical recovery steps to get your lawn back to life.

Very nicely done video. I think I have the same issue in my lawn. The blades don't have any lesions on them so I think it's fertilizer burn. Thanks for the info in helping me figure this out. You have a great screen presence. Keep it up.

Thank you for watching! It is definitely possible that is the problem. Also depending on how your weather has been it may be heat stress. I know around my area everyone who isn't getting enough water is really turning brown. I'm getting ready to put out a video about heat stress, going over what I'm seeing in the neighborhood.

I accidentally put down a little over 2x the recommended amount about a week ago. I at least realized immediately after I did it because had a little left over from previous session and saw they weren’t the same. The other brand as you could guess at this point required a more concentrated spread. So I watered my grass like 4-5 times over the next 24hrs and have been watering every day since. So far at day 5 my grass actually looks phenomenal, I even have my next door neighbor inspecting their sprinkler and crappy grass like maybe something is wrong on their side 😂 But yeah, I’ve been looking around to see if anyone effed up the same way I did so I can know if I can start watering normal again and if there’s anything else I should do.

Haha I've been there before! I'm not sure where you live, but it probably helped that it is early April and not July or August. Well if anything you gave your lawn a big kick in the butt to start the season! Thanks for watching!

An update for anyone who may need it in the future. After a week of watering everyday, I stopped. It’s been almost 2 months now. My grass ended up being mostly fine. I gave my grass an extra watering anytime it started to look dry. I did end up with a few yellow spots and 1-2 small dead spots but this year was a particularly dry spring which added to the dryness. With the rainy season now in full effect my grass is now perfectly fine with it’s regular watering schedule. Just water, water, water as long as the grass is still alive.

Thanks for the update! That is really good info. It's amazing what some good watering will do for the lawn. I'm glad things turned ok for you!!

This is extremely valuable- thank you so much for this content. I have to confess: I made the same set of mistakes with the same pattern of results and I am just so upset with myself. Last year, it was a slight overeapplication of a “selective” herbicide. The “double whammy” is the inclination to overwater with resulting…..fungus.
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds Год назад
Thank you for watching! I was shocked when I saw how quickly the grass died. It makes for good content though. I definitely learned a tough lesson on this one. It's very important to use proper rates, especially when it is hot outside.

In the summer, small feedings of fertilizer with a high (50%) sulfur or XCU or SCU coating. This is like a time release capsule.. gives u better residual for feeding in summer time👍 maybe 2 lbs per 1000ft² - 3 lbs per 1000ft²

I found your video looking for “burnt lawn”, but in my case it’s not fertilizer… I live in Reno, NV, and last week I put a small inflatable pool for my one year old grandkid on the lawn. He played in it for a while, we then emptied the pool and went inside. We forgot to take down the pool, the day was very hot (around 100F) and the plastic sheet on the grass created a kind of an oven. When I remembered about it, late in the evening, I went to fold the pool and I found that the grass underneath has become completely brown like burnt by fire all the way to the roots. It has been a week, I have been watering it, but no signs to come back. Any suggestion??? Thanks in advance…

@OutoftheWeeds Год назад
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, it sounds like the grass may be completely dead if you have been watering it a lot and it hasn't come back at all. It doesn't take long at all for one of those inflatables to fry the lawn. It'd give it a few more days of watering, but you will probably have to put new grass there.

I always burn my perfectly beautiful green grass every year . If it wasn’t for crabgrass and weeds , I would just use millorganite all year

Did u take the core and lawn tests for the dept of agriculture?
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds Год назад
No I didn't test anything. The only time I did a soil test was in the spring a couple years ago.
@andydruck7243

No I meant to be a pesticide applicator for your state? I love doing lawns... that's my thing.. and to be a licensed pesticide applicator I had to take 2 test through penn state of York pa, to use IPM integrated pest management.. You'll learn everything u need to know from chemical controls, cultural practices and genetic controls. And u seem to be doing very well with learning and using cultural controls( I haven't got to watch all ur videos). You'll learn the life cycles of surface and subsurface feeding insects, the seasons in which the disease starts showing up. You'd be so good at it. I've been a pesticide applicator for 6 years, I just got licensed, myself, through the state in June and July, when I took my tests... trust me it's the education you are looking for to better yourself at exactly what u are doing. Even if u just get the core and lawn portion, you'll learn alot.. heck dude, I'm watching YOUR VIDEOS and learning things I didn't know from you. Keep it up dude! You're doing great.

@@andydruck7243 Thank you I appreciate that! Honestly I've never even looked into any of that stuff. I currently just do lawn care as a hobby and am an air traffic controller for my normal job. I've learned everything I know from watching a ton of videos and I have several lawn books I have read and use as reference material when making videos. The science behind it all does interest me though so I'll definitely have to look into some of those courses!!

Does fertilizer burn also kill the roots? Isn’t there a chance it simply grows back?
@OutoftheWeeds
@OutoftheWeeds Год назад
Thanks for watching! Yeah it could definitely grow back if caught and handled properly. Essentially fertilizer burn comes from the salt drying up the grass, so if you water it pretty good for a few days there is a decent chance it recovers without reseeding.

Ive been having problems with one area on my lawn for 8 years. I've tried everthing..It goes to chit once the weather starts getting hot. I tried simple lawn solutions for the first time this year and it made the lawn look worse. I put down disease ex two week ago and I just put down bio advance fungas spray. It still looks like chit. My neighbors do nothing to their lawns all year long and their grass looks better than mine. Wtf is going on. HELP!!
@douglascain6404
@douglascain6404 4 месяца назад
I'm no expert but you can have my two cents worth because I had the same problem. Your grass is dieing in the summer probably because of poor soil. Your soil is either nutrient free, too sandy or too shallow or a combination. I recommend removing the soil where the grass is dieing and replacing it with 6" of nutrient rich top soil, re-seed and water like crazy. Grass plants survive in the heat better when the roots grow, extend and expand as much as possible.
