Polo, You nail it every time. Common sense solutions to problems most of us experience. My lawn goes through this every year and I'm just about ready to pull my hair out because I can't seem to give my lawn enough water. Shaded areas are fine, open to sun areas are another story. I have a huge oak tree in my front yard. Is that oak tree sucking up all of the water that I'm giving my lawn? Year after year I experience this. I'm beside my self regarding what to do.
@PoloFieldsLawnService
@PoloFieldsLawnService 2 года назад
Hello Wes, your shaded area's are gonna hold moisture in the lawn MORE than your sun area's. This is what we call a micro-climate. The video that I did about an affordable above ground water system explains this. You will see there is brown patch fungus in the shaded area's and Heat Stress in the sun area's. Check it out whenever you get a chance.

Hello Matthew, I'm assuming that you have a cool season lawn. There is mixed opinions on this but I raise my mower in the summer months. I'm curious your preferred watering hours and frequencies. Do you recommend once a day (If so, what time in the morning - 430 AM or 6/7AM), or twice a day morning and evening (with water amounts shared between the two watering times). Or possibly AM/Lunch/PM (However, I am always worried about watering mid day which in heavy heat can fry yards). For context, I have an in ground yard. Secondary Question: I had a few heats spots earlier in the summer I was batteling. I was curious if maybe there wasn't enough nutrients in the soil. Do you think adding additional topsoil with nutrients in the fall could help those areas the following year?
@PoloFieldsLawnService
@PoloFieldsLawnService Месяц назад
@jamesdreiling1253 Hello James. When you water your lawn, you're trying to give your lawn at least 1 inch of water per week. It really doesn't matter what time that you water your lawn as long as you don't water in the middle of the day because of evaporation from the sun and not at night when we are In a disease window. I will normally water my lawn early in the mornings, starting around 430 or 5 am. Heat spots are generated by something holding temperature, heating up that general area. For example: rocks or stumps in the ground, grass up against a house, grass on the edge of your sidewalk or driveway, a sewer drain in the middle of your lawn. Any of these things and several more can cause heat stress in spots. A lack of nutrients won't be the case. A lack of water in certain spots will be. Keep an eye on these spots for future reference. If you can do something about it, great, but most of the time, you'll just have to add more water in these areas
@jamesdreiling1253

Bruh, my shhh is dead, Grass like hay, dirt and its st Augustine grass, I'm in south Texas with this drought and we on water restrictions, water like once a week. Next week suppose to get down to the 90s and sum rain, I'm thinking I should rake up all the dead hay grass, rake the dirt to open it up and seed up, this sound good or should i do something else or nothing at all since winter coming, I don't want this hay next summer. 😢
@PoloFieldsLawnService
@PoloFieldsLawnService Год назад
Ok, so this is a loaded question. FIRST, that grass is dead because of the possibility of 3 things. Number 1, heat stress. Number 2, Insect damage and Number 3, fungus. You need to find out WHY it's like that FIRST. If it's insects, it possibly will be chinch bugs or grub worms. If you're using professional products, use Dylox for the grub worms and Demand CS for the chinch bugs. If you're using products from the local store, use bioadvanced 24 hrs. If it's a fungus, it could be anything, and I would need to know specifically. If it's heat stress, water will cure that. So, the plan of action should be to clean up that area that has the dead grass in it. When you mow, BAG ALL OF YOUR CLIPPINGS. It would help if you aerate that area where the grass is dead and gone. Find out if it's insect damage or fungus damage. Spread some Peat Moss over top of that damaged area and water it in. From now on, cut your grass low. That St Augustine grass will spread in those dead areas. Just keep watering those areas. If you want to kick it up a notch, add some 10-10-10 to your grass and the dead areas before you put the Peat moss down. This should help 👍🏾
@ironmedsvr
@ironmedsvr Год назад
@@PoloFieldsLawnService lol you say those areas, ITS MY WHOLE YARD! it's either dirt dry or just crunchy hay grass, I'm pretty sure it's the heat cuz just about every one's grass in my neighborhood yellow looking or just dirt. 1 inch of water a week is good enough. 2 inches of water a week will have your water bill sky high. When you water your grass, water it early in the mornings, preferably before 10 am. Also, there's ni need to water your grass every day. It needs a little time to dry out. I water mine 2 days a week. So if we don't receive any rain, I'll water it on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings.

But make sure that grass is dead because it could just be dormant, which means it just needs the right temperatures, water, and fertilizer. As far as what's turning it brown, it could be anything. Right now, we are going thru a dry spell. If you have an active fungus in your lawn, meaning you see mycelium or lesions on the blades, get you down a fungicide. If you don't see any active fungus, you're probably just noticing damage from a previous fungus. I would put some seed in those bald spots. If the grass is dead in those dormant or damaged spots to the point of no return, just seed them as well. Weasel them in, throw you down some Propiconizole over the entire lawn, water it in, and make sure those seeded spots receive some water.

@PoloFieldsLawnService
@PoloFieldsLawnService 3 месяца назад
1 oz, water it in for 30 mins afterward. You can do this every 2 weeks, but I would only do it a couple of times for now. It's best to do this in the spring and fall when we are receiving spring and fall rains. This fall, do a couple of applications, and next spring, do a couple of applications. If you have time, get you a real wetting agent and perform these applications. If you're gonna take the golf course approach, use the right solutions. Hope this helps 🙏🏾

@twveach Using a wetting agent can help with localized dry spots. It's normally used on golf courses and sports fields. It also can be used on home lawns. A lot of professional use them on home lawns in the south, like in Texas, where it is really hot most of the year. Now, can you use baby shampoo? Yes. Is this something that most professionals will frown at? Yes. But if a homeowner can't afford the real products and their just trying to get by, can you blame them 🤷🏾‍♂️

This is something that you'll have to watch and manage. If your lawn is turning brown from the heat, do what you can when it comes to watering. Find a medium and stick with it. 1 inch if water per week is good for the lawn, but if you can't do 1 inch, do less than that. Of course, when it rains, having a rain gauge to know how much water you receive is crucial because that will let you know how much watering you'll need to aim towards for the week.

Great content every time. Making the complexity of lawns simple. After i watched the other video on watering i right away got to it. My lawn has already improved tremendously. It was 60 percent heat stressed. My problem now is dealing with crabgrass this fall by putting down a pre emergent and my biggest challenge now is figuring out how to get one grass type in my back yard. I feel confident about dealing with the weeds but i have both St Augustine, Bermuda and random clumps of tall fescue growing. my backyard is mostly shaded during the day up until around 5pm. At that time the sun is full on across the back. Any help would be appreciated. Do i kill off the grass? Overseed?

Let me throw a question back at you Quen. What type of grass do you have? It seems like you live in Florida. Which grass is dominating your lawn? St Augustine or Bermuda? Since you have a warm season grass you can use Blindside as a post emergent for that crabgrass and Certanity to take care of that Tall Fescue in your lawn.
@Qdarnell89
@Qdarnell89 2 года назад
@@PoloFieldsLawnService I'm in Texas. It's probably at 60 40 with St Augustine being the most. I could honestly go either way. Not sure if that route will actually help me reach that goal of a uniformed grass yard.
@PoloFieldsLawnService
@PoloFieldsLawnService 2 года назад
@@Qdarnell89 My honest opinion is if that Bermuda is coming from your neighbors lawn, it's gonna be HARD to keep it out. Your gonna have to spray every year and there isn't much that you can spray on those grasses without suppressing or killing them both. You might just wanna start over and just go with Bermuda OR just leave it how it is and deal with both of them. I know it's aggravating but it's the nature of the beast (Bermuda)

Spray it across your lawn then water it in with your hose or sprinkler system. Put down 1in of water weekly. You'll start to see you lawn recover in about 4 days or less.
