Actually, they are not, the word "antelope" refers exclusively to the taxa Tetracerus, Tragelaphini, Hippotraginae, Peleinae, Reduncinae, Antilopinae, Cephalophinae, and Neotraginae within the family Bovidae and comprise a wastebasket taxon and not a monophyletic group, as members of the taxa Boselaphus, Bovini, Ovibovinae, Alcelaphinae, and Caprinae are not considered antelope.

Actually, the term "true antelope" actually refers to the tribe Antilopini, which contains 5 genera, Pantholops, Saiga, Antilope, Antidorcas, and Aepyceros, while the bovine the Chousingha or Four-Horned Antelope (Tetracerus quadricornis), spiral-horned antelope (tribe Tragelaphini), grazing antelope (subfamily Hippotraginae), grey rhebok (Pelea capreolus), reduncines (subfamily Reduncinae), gazelles (tribe Gazellini), duikers (subfamily Cephalophinae), and dwarf antelope (subfamily Neotraginae) are all counted as antelope, just not considered true antelope, the gazelles (tribe Gazellini) and true antelope (tribe Antilopini) are both antelope that are collectively called antilopines, antelope as a while actually comprise a polyphyletic group within the family Bovidae, as the antilopines, duikers, and dwarf antelope are all more closely related to caprines (goats and sheep), while the grazing antelope (subfamily Hippotraginae) are actually closely related to many non-antelope bovids such as muskoxen, gorals, serows, chamoises, mountain goats, tahrs, hartebeests, wildebeests, tsessebes, topis, korrigums, tiangs, bonteboks, blesboks, and hirolas of the respective Ovibovinae and Alcelaphinae subfamilies, and the chousingha and spiral-horned antelope are nestled within the subfamily Bovinae alongside the cattle (tribe Bovini) and nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), which are both non-antelope bovids, and the grey rhebok and reduncines have very close affinity to the bovines (collectively the cattle, spiral-horned antelope, nilgai, and chousingha).
