Thank you so much for this! The mushrooms I found this morning and were 99% sure we're good to eat had yellow stems when I cut them in half. You have saved me a stomach ache.

Thank you for taking the time to make this post. I found my first horse mushroom today. You gave me the name and some important info. I'm eating them raw.

@@alexkaragiannis7078 My cat eats raw mushrooms. I don't know how he knows the safe ones from the poisonous ones. He also eats daffodil flowers.

Thank you for doing this video. These are very common in the US, and a likely one for people to find in their yard. Laying your dead leaves or straw over an area over time will create a rich enough soil over time to be conducive to these mushrooms and also for cultivating the related Portabella (Agaricus bisporus) that we find ubiquitous at any grocery store.

They grow really well on lawns especially where there's tree roots popping up. Oak and pine trees. They're popping up this time of year in California

People underestimate field mushrooms because they are cultivated, but that doesn't mean they are bad mushrooms. In fact they are some of the best mushrooms. Are plerotus or pioppini mushrooms bad because they are cultivated? Not even a little.

Better than the bisporus in the store but they're very pungent and overly mushroom'ey for most people. Id prefer them to oysters.

Interesting you didn't do a stain test. There are more morphological features to consider for families of mushrooms

Probably best to eat these fried in a pan. Boiled they smell and the mushroomy taste is too much . Boiled with pasta is pretty good. But the juice boiled by itself is too strong. Theres alot of confusion with these and yellow stainers im beginning to question if theres actually any difference. I tried stainers and theyre about just the same as these. Dont eat them raw.

I picked three of these mushrooms in a field in a local park. Brown to dark brown gills. Nice edible smell coming from them. One of them the cap was not opened yet. But it was quite big. It smelled nice like fresh edible mushroom. And so I was tempted to eat some of it raw, uncooked. I ate some of it as I have done in the past with store bought mushrooms. It tasted quite nice. Like chicken or turkey flavouring and mid spicy hot sensation in my throat a minute or two afterwards. And so I decided to eat the rest of that unopened cup mushroom. About one hour later I began to feel seasick, and two hours later I emptied the contents of my stomach in a plastic bag. 🤮 I am feeling better now after vomiting and drinking about one litre of water to rinse the stomach. I will cook the rest of the mushrooms I picked from the same cluster, and have some just to see if cooking them will prevent me from vomiting them out. 🤔

@@ThePOSM - Yes. As sure as I can be. I also cooked some of the remaining mushrooms I picked from the same cluster. It did not cause me to throw up, but it did cause insomnia. I only got 3 hours sleep that night. The unopened cap mushroom that I ate raw also caused me to have very vivid dreams. Such as being chased by lions in the street and car crash accidents. Iam sure it was the mushroom because I never had those kinds of vivid dreams in the past. It lasted only one night. No more such dreams afterwards.

The ones I picked have all the features of the horse mushroom but they do stain yellow. But they smell great and earthy. No bad smell. I guess they are yellow strainers. Too bad but they smell so good.

Horse mushrooms can have a kind of diffuse yellowing about them, but won't stain Bright chrome yellow in the stipe base or when you scratch the cap margins. If in doubt, pour boiling water over a piece or pop it in the microwave for 30 secs, will really intensify staining and phenolic mell on stainers.
